A very solid rhythm game with a good balance of narrative and gameplay Gameplay The gameplay of this game can be boiled down to "reverse rhythm game" but there are exceptions. The main mode you will partake in is a 5-lane grid where notes come down, but instead of hitting the notes when they reach the bottom, you must dodge them until the fight ends. The game does quite a bit with this concept, including a little kart race, an rpg where you can reflect attacks back at enemies, a tennis mini-game and acquiring Red's arm and releasing souls , the first ones are pretty minor and not as fun as the regular style, but they're still quite a good time. (There are a few overworld encounters as well, with the Incinerator being my favorite section in any game, despite the cruel achievements). The difficulty curve is very solid and there is a lot of customization, allowing players to tailor the difficulty to their liking, with 5 initial difficulties that adjust max HP and HP regen. I find this system to be very good and well thought out, since it allows more playes to enjoy the game while not compromising the challenge of the No Hit achievements. After beating the game, the Insane difficulty will be unlocked which limits the player's HP to 1, this seems ideal for No Hit runs but the harder difficulties actually tighten the timing for reflecting shots and increase enemy HP, making the Easy difficulty most optimal and ruining the expertly crafted difficulty system, in my opinion . Though, unfortunately there are some flaws I noticed during gameplay. For one, the tutorial for jump rolls is unclear, teaching a method which will make the player perform a regular move+jump almost half the time, this is only relevant for Jump Roll achievements (unecessary and out of place tbh) and is fixed in the sequel. Other than that, some fights that have "gotchas" that will make the player get hit without proper indication and demand brute memorization, this is very noticeable when going for No Hits, especially in the Gnomes fight. I also wish the devs did a bit more with the visual effects, they are present in Everhood but are few and far between, and also very similar or too short. Maybe it's only me, but I would've liked to see a bit more meddling with the player's ability to see, requiring other sets of skills. Story This is a very meta game, in the sense that you, the player, is a character in the story and kiiiinda separate from who you control . This is very apparent from the moment you boot up the game and press play. In this game you will control a wooden doll which gets its arm stolen and must find the thief and retrieve it. When you get into combats, you only dodge the opponent's attacks until they tire out. Yeah, a limbless doll doing acrobacy and winning only by dodging is like peak character design to me, 10 outta 10 on that front. The main story has quite existencial themes which will (hopefully) go against what you're accustomed to, which some people believe makes the game tell you to do something and dissaprove of it again and again, but I never got that impression, the characters behave pretty much as you'd expect from such a situation (this does not mean the story is predictable, though it is quite simple overall). I personally was very surprised and dissapointed with myself that I went along without a hint of regret or resistance, which depending on the person can lead to a lot of introspection. (Not me though, I'm dumb). Another common criticism is that there is too little focus on the characters, and that is true. The story focuses more on their state of existence rather than them or their emotions, but I don't think that's a bad thing, it also makes narrative sense since the deity that sent the player to control Red and kill everyone would not want them to make an emotional connection since Pink originally made such emotional connection and therefore couldn't bring themselves to free the others . There is also quite a bit of side content, with a menu to replay all fights and get scores on the monthly leaderboard. There are quite a few of alternate endings and secret bosses (5 alternate endings, I believe) and it took me 10-20 hours to see it all, which combined with the side content, makes the game quite worth the price, if not a bit underpriced. Visuals, Sounds and Other Minor Details The pixel art in this game is very nice, it's not much my style but it has grown on me. There are also 3D objects ocasionally, as well as the (dance)floor changing depending on the fight, like a literal dance floor or tiled flooring. It's a small detail but does quite a lot. The Sun fight having the target be farther away therefore delaying the hit sound of shots after you got used to it is amazing and helps that fight stand out even more, I didn't have anywhere else to mention this . (Though, there are some sprites I just can't get behind, like Red's running animation or the minecart being offcenter and misaligned). The sound effects were nothing too special I think, though I rarely pay attention to them unless they're in your face so I might be missing a lot. The OST though is amazing, very much my style so i've been listening to it quite a lot. Here's a short rant about the hardest achievement in this game since there's nowhere else to put it (I wanted to say worst but i'm biased towards it so whatev). No, it's not the Hallway achievement, since it serves to put into perspective the amount of time the beings in Everhood lived . No, it is not the 150K Jump Rolls, though I would say it's the worst one (I did all no hits with less than 50K) It's the only out of place achievement IMO. I am talking about the No Hit Incinerator Part 2 . This achievement is infamous, and for good reason, it alone bring this game's 100% difficulty to around Super Meat Boy's level and is a huge step up from all other achievements in the game, which go up to around Celeste's hardest B-sides' level of difficulty. The main reason for this is that its the only achievement in the game which has RNG and requires good luck, furthermore, it is plastered in the middle of an encounter which requires you to watch a cutscene and go through the first part of the encounter to even attempt it. This takes around 2-3 minutes every time and requires quite a bit of focus the whole way through. For most achievement hunters, it takes around 6-15 hours to achieve, but for me, it took 26. If you're looking to get all achievements, be aware of this one's existence before diving in (though check it out after beating the main story, as the encounter its a part of is really good and best experienced blind). Final Score 8/10 - A really solid game that is great at what it sets out to do, though there are some rough edges if you're achievement hunting.

Probably the most criminally underrated game I've ever played. On par with Undertale and Oneshot in terms of absolute peak.
