March 2025
I will admit, reading through the third entry from PixelFade was kind of underwhelming at first. The visual novel itself presents you with a pretty humdrum story and plenty of visual novel tropes and cliches along the way, most of which get pushed away to the side to focus less on the narrative and more on the moments with their characters... It's kind of PixelFade's signature at this point: slap together a hamfisted, barebones story and reason for characters to be together, but then surprise us by writing genuinely endearing, heartwarming characters to interact with. I'm not sure if I'd place Ethereal Enigma as high as Ace Academy or Crystalline, but it's hard to deny that- as expected of PixelFade- the characters are simply fun to be around and watch. Regardless of which PixelFade visual novel you read, you will always walk away looking back on their characters with a certain friendly fondness that some other visual novels just can't manage to hook you with for some reason. At some point, you realize that PixelFade characters truly do feel like your friends. Their characters always manage to feel so natural and easy to like, not forced in the slightest, and they interact with each other and speak just as smoothly and natural. Seriously, PixelFade's writing with their characters is simple, but always effective. Being a little more nitpicky, you may or may not notice typos that I'm kind of surprised are STILL there, reused art from previous titles, and the occasional hiccup with voice lines being slightly different from what is written, but those are all splitting hairs and not that big of a deal in my opinion. Every dialogue choice you get in this one seems to follow the same formula; 1: overly positive, 2: immature/neckbeard-level perv joke, or 3: boring and flat, almost like a "I have no comment" option. It's a little bit underwhelming or uninteresting for most scenes. Despite that, if you know what to expect from PixelFade, they never fail to deliver on a good experience for a very good price. It's impressive that PixelFade still hasn't dipped into NSFW content, outside of skirting around it with some jokes. Yet they don't need to do so for their characters to leave a lasting impression on you... (Although I definitely wouldn't complain if they did dip their toes into it some day). Other visual novels treat NSFW content as if its your reward for reading, others treat is as if it's the only reason you're reading. While I'm personally not a prude, and prefer at least a little NSFW content- After all, it's a natural part of relationships- There is something inspiring about PixelFade never relying on NSFW to sell their visual novels or trying to use NSFW to force their characters to seem more attractive to readers. No NSFW means the characters have to stand on their own merits, on their own personalities to capture our hearts and minds rather than tantalizing scenes and debauchery. While I'm sure PixelFade will ever do NSFW content, I'm have no doubt that if they did, they would do it extremely tastefully and it wouldn't at all detract from the experience or make their impeccable writing for their characters any lesser.

This is a cute and charming slice of life visual novel. Knida short, I did both routes in 8 hours in the end. I will warn you though this is no Crystaline. Don't go in expecting that. But if you like a slice of life visual novel you will probably enjoy this one. Only negative is I couldn't find a way to turn voices off. I prefer to just read without voices and having them on as I read was a little distracting. Please add an option for them please!

Ethereal Enigma is definitely my least favourite of Pixel Fade games. The largest issue is that it's rather short. Content feels lacking, and almost half-done in places. I felt like Pixel Fade passed over a lot of potential content they could've added, and it showed. I still think the story was fairly good, and the characters engaging. Pixel Fade's quality did still show through in the artstyle, and writing. If you enjoyed Crystalline or Ace Academy, then you will probably also still like this. For me, there still was enough content and quality shown to be worth a thumbs up, but I would not buy this game full price.

Ethereal Enigma is a great addition to PixelFade's list of visual novels. It is definitely more polished that their previous games, but it did not lose PixelFade's unique humor and charm. Even though it is a basic slice of life novel the story is well presented, and the characters are all well written with well defined yet not overly cliche personalities. The sound track is still nice to listen too and the art style is polished and nice to look at while reading. Best girl is Risa as she is the only one that does not throw made shade at the MC for every little thing. Ethereal Enigma has a ton of different choices you take take for different flavor dialogues, and unlike Crystalline I think the devs did much better at making the important choices concerning the ending route more obvious. Overall it was a great read and I am looking forward to the next game.

A reverse isekai story this time, just as good as Crystalline.
