This game is a delight. The endless world feels real. I'm getting good at sailing (when my rudder's not stuck on a sandbank) and I have a seagull named Jonathan Livingston. What's not to like? Just save strategically and you're golden.

Excellent advanced survival game with great progression and a large mix of items and builds. It's a true survival game, decisions about exploration and resources planning are key. You can't just expect to move through predetermined tiers (or levels) and just survive without thinking and planning. The mechanics are not too hard to understand, but they do take patients and some ingenuity (just like a real survival situation). It originally had some glitches with rafts flying around, but most of this seems worked out. Bottom line, great game for using your brain and thinking your way out of a near real survival situation - but has a little added fun thrown in with the tantalizing possibility of finding small treasure caches that will help you along. Overall great game - most definitely recommend.

This is an EA island survival sim. Generally pretty relaxing and has some unique and well thought out game mechanics. The early game loop is build your small base camp and travel to nearby islands. -Find or build valuable things you will need for a long trip. Navigation systems, a large houseboat raft. -Balance your nutrients but plan ahead. Food goes bad and you need to preserve foods. Fruit are seasonal so you may need to dry some for later. -The later game loop tests your prep skills. Can you successfully travel to the next group of islands and start a new base camp without starving or dying of thirst. -The base building is pretty good. You can improvise and build with what you have. Banana leaves? Palm leaves? Grass? If you are really ambitious build advanced walls with planks salvaged from islands. The game is EA so it does not have a lot of exploration (aside from procedural islands with loot to help you expand) . However, the mechanics for various crop growing and food preservation are well thought out so there is a lot of smaller things to do. I think this is the biggest value of the game because it adds a lot of realism and there are small rewards such as improved health from eating a balanced diet. An example of a more complex process is. You might find an oil lamp in a ship wreak. But its useless. What to do? Well take a coconut. Take the meat out. Take an empty coconut. Add the coconut meat and some water. Cook it on the fire. Now you have some oil for your lamp. Quality of life improves. Farming is also well thought out. You need to make compost using multiple materials. Ditto for food preservation. The indie developer has been pretty dedicated to updates and listens to feedback. The UI has changed a few times and my observation is always to the better. There are a few bugs during sailing so save before you leave an island. Make sure nothing is loose on your raft like a stick. It can sink you! The rest of the game is very stable and performs well until you start building really big. I recommend game to support EA, participate in the journey. Personally I enjoy coming back to it every few months. Releases are slow, to be expected for an Indie, but I think the developer will continue building it out. This is niche for the well thought out survival processes and planning ahead.

I have sunk many hours into this game, and even though it has some janky things here and there, mixed in with some bugs, it really is a labor of love. There is a high level of detail in the sailing aspect of the game, with some complex survival mechanics and crafting mixed in. I know some comments here are saying that the game doesn't get frequent updates. But I think this has changed. If you check the developer Discord, they are actively working on the game. The experimental branch is getting frequent updates. Definitely a game to put in your wishlist and keep track off.

Even though I haven't really gone off my starting island yet, I feel it's time to write a review (might be updated later). Summary: I love the complexity and challenge of this game! It's what I hoped Stranded Deep would be, but was disappointed from that one. My history with the game: I tried the game a year or so ago, but got it refunded, because the UI was barely readable for me (due to both size and contrast, plus way too much information on the inventory screen) and that made the first steps already hard and not fun. I knew that they were working on new UI/UX though, so I kept an eye on the game. Now it's finally there (on the public experimental branch), so I gave it another shot. I'm so happy that I did! Details: The new UI/UX isn't perfect (yet), but waaaayyyy better than the old one. Now I can finally enjoy the game :) Features that I like are: * Procedurally generated maps, which makes replayability high * Different environments you can play in (hot, cold, "normal") and difficulties * You can't "just" craft this small thing. It's: place blueprint, place ingredients, put it together (by using your tools on it a certain amount of times) * Next to the default hunger/thirst/energy/stamina, you also have needs for salt, vitamins and food variety. * Sometimes using a different tool with the same object gives a different result. It's fun for me to try to figure out how to do stuff. Keep in mind that it's early access, so there are things missing and bugs, but the game is already a lot of fun for me right now. I didn't have a game-breaking bug yet, only small things. You can e.g. already see that a story is planned, too. As well as some more parameters to customize your game. I haven't really gotten off my starter island yet. It's not huge, but one of the bigger ones, as far as starter islands go. I think most islands are on the smaller side in this game. I only travelled to another island once, to see what it would be like and that already promised some more stuff. There are ship wrecks to find and loot, also loot on other islands and some kind of scavenger hunt apparently, which I guess will become the story later. I'm not sure about the sailing yet, because it's supposed to get more difficult later. It was fine my first time, only took a few minutes to figure out how it works without IRL sailing experience. But I'm a bit afraid of the gradually raising expectations. Can't say yet if that's gonna be too overwhelming or will turn out okay. In theory, I like the idea, that the more experience you have with sailing, the more difficult it gets. I'm happy I gave the game another chance! Looking forward to where it will go in the future :-)
