Annoyingly more difficult than I expected. I did the full tutorial, and still nearly wiped my first city twice because of poor management. This one requires a lot of micromanagement - sometimes a little too much, I'd say - but it sometimes just scratches that itch of wanting to play God and try to save the world. Just don't get distracted from not prioritizing food and water... I do agree with a lot of the reviews that a lot of the buildings look the same when zoomed out though. That's probably my top complaint. All this said, I'd still recommend it, because it's immensely satisfying when you manage to complete your goals and objectives.
This recommendation is highly dependant on the price, but Steam doesn't allow a "maybe". If you can get it under 5 eurobucks, I'd say it's worth it. More than that, no. A lot of games released in the last 5 years seem to be made by writers and artists with little or no technical knowledge, and as a result end up with good graphics, music and voice acting, but the game itself is buggy and sluggish even on modern CPUs and GPUs. Endzone is almost the opposite of that. The graphics are adequate (though the art direction is terrible - every building basically looks the same), the music is quite annoying, the writing is extremely awkward (feels like it was translated by someone who didn't speak English very well) and the voice acting is atrocious (the script is bad but the actors somehow manage to make it sound even worse). But the game runs great, the UI is borderline tolerable and the systems design (the underlying mechanics relating different resources and activities) is better than average. It feels like a game programmed by actual programmers... but where everything else was probably also done by programmers (or at least by people who weren't very good at those other jobs). Gameplay itself is fine but not great; there are way too many different resources and different "professions" to fill and too many "fires" to put out (droughts, sandstorms, building damage, radiation, infertility, raider attacks, epidemics, morale, etc.). The result is a game where you're constantly having to react to whatever the RNG threw your way rather than focusing on efficient city layouts and production chains (you're still expected to manage those, but you won't really have much time to experiment, because you're constantly being interrupted). By the time you've bought yourself some time to redesign your city, all research is finished, every landmark on the map has been looted, the game is essentially over, and there isn't much point in continuing (unless you're just aiming for a larger population). If you enjoy micromanagement and don't mind grid-based layouts with repetitive-looking buildings, this might be the game for you (for a week or two - it doesn't really have enough variety to give it long-term appeal). It runs great, looks alright, and sounds... er... well, you can always turn the music off and cover your ears when the traders speak. TL;DR - It's Banished on steroids, with a side of rust (not the game Rust, just the brown stuff).
I enjoy these type of games, but I'm easily overwhelmed and usually give up easily. However, this one seems to be still complex and interesting and on the verge of something I can actually handle. I can tell you it's also a complete game with no apparent bugs. It's well thought out and I see the inspiration for more than a few Alien Dawn features in here. If you are like most of us and equate hours of play with value-for-dollar, I think this is a wise investment. You'll lose entire weekends, I'm sure.
Endzone in a nutshell: curse the developers, rage quit, return the next morning with coffee, repeat. Like Banished, its learning curve is brutal. A single misstep in population growth will wipe out half your colony. But if you love deep logistics, trade, exploration, and high-stakes survival planning, it’s addictively unforgiving. It won't respect your time or your mental health, but you'll love every second of it.
I played Endzone 2 when it released and loved it. I spent over 150 hours in it. I was new to the series back then, but after taking a break for almost two years, I found myself thinking about Endzone 1 and decided to give it a try... I jumped straight into Survival mode without even playing the tutorial. Oh boy, what a surprise! It took me around 50 hours to build a truly stable settlement. At one point, my population dropped from 400 people to almost complete extinction. Somehow, I managed to normalize it and now that same settlement is stronger than ever :D In the beginning, keeping your economy alive in such a harsh environment is a real challenge. The game doesn't hold your hand and sometimes pushes you to the limit. But when everything finally starts working, there is something incredibly satisfying about watching your little community thrive. Endzone 1 has a special atmosphere. It can be stressful, but also peaceful. You can spend hours designing a cozy settlement, planning every road and building, and just enjoy watching your people survive. If I had to choose between Endzone 1 and Endzone 2, I would choose Endzone 1. Endzone 2 has some great ideas. I love the vehicles, exploration, and improved raider system... but for everything else, Endzone 1 feels like the stronger game and with more soul. I hope the developers return someday and bring some of Endzone 2's features, like vehicles and weapons, into Endzone 1. A new DLC would be amazing. I recently bought the existing DLCs, and they add a lot to the experience! All in all, Endzone - A World Apart is a game with a unique atmosphere and a lot of heart. I’ll definitely keep coming back to it.
