At under 4hrs, it's a little too short. The first level feels like an extended tutorial, the second level is brilliant, really good level design, no hand holding but the flow through the level is natural and rewarding with the odd secret hidden away, excellent enemy variety and a great (Ornstein and Smough style) boss fight at the end. The third level is just a 20 minute gauntlet, where you fight a mix of enemies previously fought across a couple of basic arenas, disappointing after how good the second level was. Then the game just ends apruptly with no boss fight or anything. It feels like they ran out of time/money. It's not a soulslike, it has bonfires, returning to collect xp after death and breaking pottery, but that's about it. The music and cheesy barbarian vibes are great. All in all it's a good game and I am glad to have finally got around to playing it. Will definitely pick up the sequel and hope that it's more like the second level than anything else!
A good, simple game that is fine for a single playthrough, provided you buy it on sale. There is nothing new or groundbreaking here, and the experience is quite short. Featuring a pseudo-Bronze Age Hyperborean setting, the entire game is a homage to sword-and-sorcery à la Howard or C. A. Smith, combined with a blue-collar power metal aesthetic. It is simple and doesn't take itself too seriously. Elderborn is to Dark Souls what Howard's "The Tower of the Elephant" is to "The Lord of the Rings" in literature, or Manilla Road to Blind Guardian in music. It's not about intricacies or a face-melting challenge; it's all about the atmosphere.
Excellent hack n slash 1st person game. Similar in style to Dark Souls (respawing enemies and respawn/save points dotted around). It has more physics though - which I like. No magic system and skills/talents are few, but just enough to make levelling interesting. Solid 9/10
One clear is 3-4 hours that absolutely SLAPS. Minimal story, it wants to just unleash the beast and gives you a veritable arsenal to strategically dismantle and counter, or simply bulldoze, your way through all who dare to enter your path. If that wasn't enough the soundtrack mercilessly shreds along with you, making it an easy recommendation to purchase, even if you don't buy the game.
