Elderand is a good game but short, not to hard if you have the right upgraded equipment, meaning there can be some farming sometimes. There is no platform sequence though, and the bosses are quite easy but there is this old school ambiance that may hook you till the end. An overall 7/10.

I really enjoyed this game. Its your basic side-scrolling 2d action platformer with rpg elements. You can build your character for hack/slash or magic or both (I'd recommend choosing one or the other so you don't waste your upgrade points). And you can have two separate character weapon/defense profiles, so one second you can fight with a sword/shield and have specific upgrades, then with a press of the button use your bow and have other specific upgrades - upgrades are in the form of two rings you can wear at any given time. I was very frustrated at first that there wasn't any sort of warping ability, but that is unlocked later in the game. You can save often. And something that is really cool is that you can clear your build and rebuild anytime you want (unlike in most games you have to spend a lot of money to buy that option maybe once or twice). Controls are not the best and some things are totally clunky, such as turning around while in the air or raising your shield after swinging your sword (enemies are faster than you and this often results in a hit before you can raise your shield)... enemies are medium variable (skins are reused some but you don't notice too much). The worst thing in the game is the bees..... THE BEEEEEEES!! I played it for a couple of weeks and beat it after accidentally triggering an invincibility glitch. Perfect timing for that because I was at the point that I needed to do a lot of grinding to save up money for some upgrades I wanted. If you upgrade properly from the get-go you can breeze through this. I would never pay $20 for this game, but on sale I got it for like $7 I think, and I feel it was worth it. But then again there are some REALLY good games for $7 with this same type of pixel-art and a better map system and controls, so I guess you gotta figure it out for yourself.

Perfectly competent. It doesn't do anything new in the genre, but what's there is done well enough. Combat is serviceable, if a bit basic. The level design is solid, movement abilities are all genre staples, graphics and music are pretty good. Not what I would recommend to get you into the genre, but if you've played all the big names in the metroidvania space and are looking for something new, this isn't a bad way to spend a dozen hours.

Completed the game and I have tried a Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence builds. Nothing compares to the dps of the dexterity build using bow, whip, daggers, nothing comes close to what I've tested so far. Elderand is a great game however it is short, very very short metroidvania. Great mechanics and feel and the content that is offered is enjoyable as well as the boss fights feeling challenging.

TLDR: Elderand is not a masterpiece in game design, but it's a solid, fun title well worth your time if you enjoy these sorts of games. Full Review: Elderand is a fun Metroidvania with great pixel graphics and enjoyable game play. I reminds me of the arcade/console games I played as a kid in the late 80s. What sets it apart from other MVs? [*] The focus here is mostly on combat and exploration. There is some minor platforming, but it's not difficult and I didn't run into anything I'd call a platforming challenge during the games 10+ hour run time. [*] Elderand has an RPG-style leveling system. You gain XP for killing enemies and can then spend them to increase your health or one of the game's 3 damage types (strength, dexterity or magic). The game gives you a variety of weapons to go with aforementioned stats. These feel suitably different and are really fun to play with. [*] The game uses old-school style save points. If you die, you lose all progress you made since you last saved. This is rare enough in modern games that it actually does set the game apart. At least there are no corpse runs to get currency back! [*] Atmosphere. The game feels like a pixelated pulp fantasy (in particular it reminds me of Conan) Pros: [*] Excellent pixel artwork. There's a room in the opening section with a dragon statue in the background that's just stunning. Multiple parallax layers give the room a real sense of depth. More than once, I stopped playing just to stop and admire the pixel art for a moment or two. [*] It's fun. Combat is not overly complex and has an arcdey feel to it, but each enemy moves and attacks in a different pattern. I never got tired of killing stuff and even spent some extra time grinding for materials to upgrade my favorite weapons. Neutral: [*] As far as MV mechanics go, you won't see anything new here. Upgrades are pretty standard fare: double jump, air dash and a grappling hook. There are also two varieties of locked doors that can only be opened if you've found the right McGuffin for that door type. [*] It's a bit shorter than modern games in the same genre (8-12 hours). I was happy with the run time, but I also got it on sale for $7.99. I'm not sure I would have been as happy had I paid $19.99. Because of the length, I recommend buying this one on sale. Cons: [*] Other than it not doing anything particularly original, I really don't have any gripes with the game.
