Game is good but unfinished/barely finished and wraps up loose ends poorly; the included short story at the end meant to do so was not captivating or compelling at all.

An absolute blast of a game that stands out in multiple departments, from its visuals to its combat to its rather strange yet engaging story. The combat will more or less be hit or miss for someone but that doesn't mean its bad. Its purely based on rock-paper-scissors but you're going to be changing weapons all the times, in fact it benefits you to do so, as its the core of the between moments in combat. So there's a time where you'll go "wow this weapon is cool" then you'll be forced to drop it, so I hope you like all three weapons, which is likely because the small selection is great, the tool-set found within each is a bit shallow but the application is kinda wide. A grand issue encountered is the the fact that you cannot cancel out of attacks and you don't have I-frames while in combat, so you'll get hit while mid special attack. The life system is shockingly engaging but also you'll get a lot of revives, but don't be an idiot, please. I want to talk about the story but revealing any element of the story would ruin the experience, so please go in blind. That or read the old testament, trust me, it WILL help you, I am not making a jab or comedic statement. The setting just straight ripping Hebrew lore and the Apocrypha make this experience MUCH more standing out, there's no other game like this, and the mythological setting adds onto this. The music is well made, but not memorable, I finished the game on the same day I wrote this review and no notes come into my head, it flies over, through one ear and out the other. I don't remember it being bad, so trust me. I do not like most of the levels in the game, its a solid 60/40 of fine but not great, to "dear god this isn't fun". There is a lot of platforming made easy with one weapon while the other two make it okay. Expect to be hit mid air a few times, so pull your hair out. Overall, I love this game, I wish more people would also, but I can understand its strange formatting and willingness to be weird may turn people off, but sometimes, its better to be strange than standard.

From the perspective of a guy who loves DMC and similar "spectacle fighter" games, this leaves a lot to be desired. From the perspective of a Christian familiar with extra-canonical content that inspired this game, it's pretty cool to see games made that rely so heavily on stuff that's obscure even to the average Christian. It is FAR from accurate, however. A lion's share of the characters are tangentially related to the actual figures from scripture at best, but this is fiction. Enoch only speaks enough to avoid the silent protagonist title, but he still looks cool enough to hang out with guys like Dante or Shadow in your edgy, homemade desktop wallpaper. Other figures are just straight up cast in roles contrary to their actual scriptural positions. Again, it's fiction, so this is far from a deal breaker. I only see it worth pointing out if you, like me 13 years ago, expected a game where you played as Enoch to be made by Judeo-Christians. As an actual art piece, God knows there's few games that rival this. Time hasn't been kind to El Shaddai when it comes to the general plot and gameplay. In a world where you can run the second coming of DMC on the same machine that you're playing El Shaddai, you're not gonna fire this up just for gameplay. If you're looking for something vaguely inspired by early Judeo-Christian mysticism, you can also play the best SMT game (Nocturne) and the most recent mainline SMT on the same hardware you're running El Shaddai. But this thing is as close to a legal acid trip as you're going to get. From personal experience, I do not recommend playing this game with a headache, because it will get you to throw up. El Shaddai's use of color, form, and absolutely batcrap insane effects is a treat for the eyes (when you're sober and not sick). The soundtrack is also stellar, and you're really not going to get that combination in any other competently made games these days. In short, I give this game an "obscure biblical figure running through a nightcore album cover in Levi jeans" out of 10. If that interests you, pick it up. If not, grab it on sale.

wow this was... this was something else. i always wanted to play this game when i was young because i saw a cool game music video on PlayHit TV (RIP) but was never able due to the exclusivity of it, then when i managed to get a ps3, it already costed my eyes and a liver to get a copy (unless its a japanese copy, then all is well) now with a pc port i finally got to play and wow, its something alright, NO NO I LOVED IT but i can't really wrap my head around this experience, its genius and dumb, very very dumb, but intentionally dumb to the point it has fun with itself when it can. religious undertone are plastered on the box art but its not just a place of reference or inspiration, its also not a mockery, the only way i could describe how the religious undertones are treated in this game is something along the lines of ''some nerds read the bible and though it was just the COOLEST SHIT EVER'' its not quite reverence, its more under the tones of a author take on a set story, its all quite easy to take but at the same time clouded in a mist of whimsy and possibly some drugs as well. visuals, fun and whimsy this game has in spades, but what it doesn't quite hit right is the gameplay itself, while you can have fun with the simplistic combat, i found myself fighting the combat system more than fighting the enemies, Enoch is much less capable than a bayonetta or a dante. i like everything around around the combat but feel rather icky about whats actually inside, the platforming is also absolute dogshit, still i had fun. the creativity comes in spades, not just the biblical inspirations but all sorts of little neat things can be caugh, from the rule of cool of many scenes to the fact that the game plays in a sort of tokuzatsu style that all your enemies are basically wearing a power ranger villain suit while fighting martial arts with you, this is a game that won me over by having a lot of substance in its style and never stopping looking gorgeous despite how simplistic the scenarios and graphics are. -SPOILERS AHEAD- This is the first game i ever played that once you finish, youre rewarded with a pdf that explains from the devs themselves the shortcomings of the low budget the game had, their plans and a whole ass book having a continuation of the story had they had more time and money to finish it, with art, the trademarked finger snap and what one can call a ''conclusion'', this is... honestly this game i have no idea how to properly put it into words, despite the jank i kinda not adore it but love it. - END OF SPOILERS - despite the shortcomings and a lot of annoying sections, i still closed the game saying ''damn what a good game'', normally i'm way more critical about annoyances in games but i don't know exactly what is compelling me to be more forgiving of this game, try it, it might hit you too

This game's basically what you'd get if the guys who made Shin Megami Tensei decided to make a game that's essentially a highly-religious take on Devil May Cry 3 with the exact same humor and action direction with significantly more nonsense. The main character's an immortal scribe clad in nothing but fragile armor and jeans. Your navigator and save point is smartphone-toting Lucifer who straight up tells you you can beat the game in 7 hours if you're good. Pros: - All weapons have a good amount of depth, are creatively designed and handle very differently - Art style is downright timeless, if I were asked to come up with an example of how stylization trumps realism I'd pick this with no hesitation - Very good action sequences and setpieces - A very healthy amount of difficulty, even on normal - Abnormally good camera placement. This is a bizarre thing to even mention, I know, but I need you to understand that I played this game on a fightpad with zero control over the camera and had no issues whatsoever. Someone worked really hard to make that possible. - The game as a whole is delightfully strange Cons: - There isn't much enemy variety. This game plays the "different shirt = harder minion" card regularly and by the endgame there's 3 different weight classes of humanoid that populate all the non-boss combat sections. Granted, those body types all have numerous variants with different attacks and weapons, but it feels like the enemy army started stagnating a little over halfway through the game. This isn't too much of an issue given that these enemies are all reasonably challenging, unlike 80% of Bayonetta and DMC creeps being nothing but combo fodder, but it still lessens the experience once you notice it - The main character doesn't get to be much of a character. Borderline-silent protagonist, which doesn't really work in a game like this. - This version's fairly prone to crashing. Save points are frequent enough that you won't lose much even if you do crash, though.
