It was a pleasant surprise for me. The characters are incredibly unique and the combat system is a 10/10. Yeah, the main story is weak but some of the dialogues are hilarious (e.g. there was a lady who wanted to string her husband up the eaves by his underwear). If you love this genre, you should definitely give it a shot.

A lighthearted prequel to [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1658280/Eiyuden_Chronicle_Hundred_Heroes/]Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes . Note for Suikoden fans : If youā€™re more interested in a Suikoden-like game, that would be Hundred Heroes. Rising, on the other hand, is not too much like it, except visually. It sets up some charactersā€™ backstories, mainly CJ, Garoo, and Isha, who all appear in Hundred Heroes. However, if youā€™re not interested in a lighthearted, quest-a-thon, action JRPG, you can skip the prequel and still understand Hundred Heroes perfectly well. CJ arrives at New Nevaeh as part of a Rite of Passage for her family of scavengers, as she seeks a treasure even greater than what her father found before her in the townā€™s quarry. Unfortunately, the town is in bad shape, and her conscience just wonā€™t allow her to say ā€œnoā€ to the peopleā€™s plights. Information ā€¢ The Eiyuden Chronicle games are intended to be a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series. ā€¢ Despite the point of above, the battle system of Rising is nothing like the Suikoden series. (Thereā€™s a clip of the gameā€™s battle system on the store page. There are probably plenty of videos on YouTube of Suikodenā€™s. Explaining in text the difference between the two would be lengthy.) ā€¢ There is no difficulty setting (except for post-game when ā€œHard Modeā€ becomes available for re-fighting bosses). However, from my perspective, the game is beginner-friendly. While the boss battles are a bit challenging, as long as the player knows when to dodge and when to strike, they should be able to get through them. ā€¢ A very quest-heavy game. Countless sidequests, along with the main quests. Sidequests are almost exclusively fetch quests (ā€œgo get this item for meā€ quests). ā€¢ There is a fishing mini-game. The player must hit a sequence of buttons without making a mistake. The timer is fairly generous, so most people should be able to do this without issue. ā€¢ Donā€™t know if thereā€™s a more official name for this type of puzzle, but Iā€™d call them ā€œcomplete the lineā€ puzzles. The player has to rotate tiles to complete a line for magic to flow from one point to another. Iā€™m pretty bad at puzzles, but I found these to be quite easy, so people who like puzzles will probably think theyā€™re not at all challenging enough. ā€¢ The game worked perfectly with my PS5 (DualSense) controller. I didnā€™t need to use mouse/keyboard whatsoever. Praises ā€¢ Available in ten different languages with two variations of a language. Spain Spanish and Latin America Spanish? Well, isnā€™t that fancy. ā€¢ Good music. Definitely JRPG-style sound effects. ā€¢ Decent humor. The relationship between CJ and her reluctant spelunking partner Garoo is quite amusing; she wants to help everyone and he just wants to help himself. ā€¢ Lovely anime art. Character designs have been inspired by Suikoden. ā€¢ I really like the backgrounds to areas; some are pretty. There are even objects in the foreground to give it a more 3D feeling. ā€¢ There are three sidequests involving procuring a cat. Complaints ā€¢ Most sidequests are uninteresting, which makes doing a lot of them tedious and boring. My main motivation for doing them all was the Steam achievements and baqua (money). ā€¢ I wish there was a way to more easily avoid enemies, because a lot of the sidequests have the player revisiting areas with super weak enemies and theyā€™re really just not worth the time. ā€¢ Platforming is frustrating at times. Getting the characters to jump just right seems flawed. ā€¢ Not a single dark-skinned character in the whole game. I know theyā€™re trying to make it like Suikoden, but thatā€™s one of the things they shouldnā€™t be striving for. ā€¢ Several achievements for Hard Mode, which makes 100%-ing the game less accessible to JRPG beginners. I definitely didnā€™t feel like fighting all the bosses again either. The story didnā€™t actually get all that interesting until toward the end, when more serious story plots and subplots are revealed. Overall, I feel mostly neutral about this game. It is just supposed to be an intro for the main game: Hundred Heroes, so Iā€™m not taking it too seriously. I didnā€™t hate it, so itā€™s getting a positive review.

I had such a great time playing Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. Relatively simple combat (though not always easy), side-scrolling dungeon exploration, town improvement, and (sometimes grindy) questing/resource collection are paired with gorgeous HD-2D graphics and a lovable cast of characters. I frequently found myself admiring the vibrant colors and quality of the backgrounds in town and the movements of the character sprites, both during action and idle animations. I particularly loved Isha's floaty, ethereal style of walking and the way her blue braids swished around her when she moved. Story-wise, it's a feel-good tale of friendship, overcoming obstacles, and reconciling with the past. CJ, Garoo, and Isha became such a lovable trio to me. At one point, they put their hands together in a huddle as if to say, "GO, team!"ā€”and I was cheering right along with them. CJ's unwavering optimism and sense of adventure, Garoo's gruff sarcasm that hides a big heart, and Isha's courteous, if abrupt, practicality made them all come to life so wonderfully. Even the NPCs in the town all had distinctly enjoyable personalities. To me, the combat was very unique. You start with only one playable character (CJ), but later have two and eventually three. Each party member has their own distinct weapon, movement style, and special skill. These weapons and skills also each have their own unique upgrade paths that unlock new and interesting ways of traversing the terrain and fighting enemies. Each character is controlled by a single button (e.g., X, Y, or B on a controller), which is used to switch to that character and also for attacking. The special skill button triggers the skill of the character that is currently active. These mechanics allowed me to strategize and experiment with different ways of approaching certain platforming challenges or exploiting enemy weaknesses. It was fantastic! I found the game to be quite addictive and powered through most of it during the course of a weekend. It was fun and straightforward to achieve 100% and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

+ Art and design + Town visually improve by your actions +/- Simple but enjoyable gameplay - Too Easy with no option of harder difficulty ( except in the endgame. ) A good introduction into the Eiyuden universe before the main game. A mix between a Beat'em up, Metroidvania and classic JRPG. The story is mostly lighthearted and fun, the characters, monsters and areas are colorful. A playthrough of the main quest and a couple sidequests will take you about 10-15 hours while doing everything will take you 20 hours but you could still play more after the achievements, sidequests continues but are more of the same, collect stuff or kill enemies, sometimes only speak to NPCs. The game is between very easy and easy, I never needed to grind and only in the end game, when a Hard mode gets unlocked, that I started dying sometimes. It is somewhat linear, there are some nooks and crannies and some platforming but very limited, most of the time is spent hitting enemies or talking to NPCs in town. Playing through the game, if you do the sidequests, you'll be upgrading the town and it is fun and satisfying, buildings change visually and more noninteractive NPCs will be present. Despite its simplicity is it enjoyable and short enough not to get too repetitive but you'll return to the same areas often. It feels to me somewhat like PS2 JRPGs and I enjoyed that era.

This was an unexpected find, and I heartily recommend it. If you are allergic to sidequests or reading, you may want to skip it. The game's focus is very apparent: Simulate an entire town's population as you resurrect said town from the ashes. It has a friendly tone and a leisurely pace. This is the sort of game you can pick up for half an hour at a time without losing your place, since every objective is pretty straightforward. Preparation is the watch-word here. If you are going out of your way to complete all the sidequests as they become available to you, you are going to demolish the standard (only) difficulty setting. I can't fault the game for this; rebuilding the town is the initial stated goal of the game, and in that sense, the raw power of gear upgrades feels extremely validating and worthwhile. That said, I can see the criticism about locking the higher difficulty as post-game content. At the same time though, all that switch really does is stack ~20 levels on every monster/boss. This would render the player insta-dead from the slightest breeze without mid to end-game defenses, so the argument falls a bit flat. The visuals are beautiful and have a certain charm to them. ARPGs of this style tend to be a visual mess in combat; by contrast this game's presentation is exceptionally clean and well ordered. Very rare occasions in which I lost track of where my characters were. Hit boxes were well proportioned; there is contact damage with enemies, but it happens so rarely, it's easily recognizable as player error. The music was pleasant. Nothing especially notable that I can recall, but it does its job of generating atmosphere. The main characters were well written and enjoyable. NPC dialogue starts off strong and never lets up. Even post game has a surprising amount of writing effort to it. The story is a bit of a slow burn, but that's to be expected with the initial focus of helping to rebuild a town. There are larger stories at work, both for the town and the neighboring regions. I appreciated how even with foreshadowing, they still provided strong twists and turns in the plot. It's strong foreshadowing for what they plan to do with Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. I'm glad we're finally getting a spiritual successor to Suikoden, and this does a pretty good job of inviting people into that new world. These devs have some big shoes to fill, but I'm excited to see what they can do.
