A simple little game with vibes. The characters are cute, the battle is fun, the aesthetic is beautiful, and the story while not revolutionary is good and avoids having any cringe or face-palm worthy moments that can sometimes be a detriment to JRPGs (looking at you Octopath Traveller). There's also loads of content and sidequests that make you want to continue playing. Its not the greatest game ever made, but its a very endearing game which I'm glad to have played. 7.75/10

Pretty decent little game. I sort of assumed it was a more traditional JRPG but it's actually an action RPG where you switch between three characters on the fly (I mean literally, in the middle of a combo, you can switch back and forth while keeping the attack string up). Bosses are your typical affair of dodging telegraphed attacks and looking for weak points or ways to counter them. It's all 2D, where you only move side to side, in both exploration and combat (which does not transition you to a different screen, it's all right there). So it's sort of like Valkyrie Profile's exploration and Tales of Destiny's combat, for you oldhead JRPG fans out there. Combat is fun and generally feels extremely fair; the only issue I had was with two specific enemy types that could trap you in a corner and just obliterate you--I think this partially stems from a shortage of I-frames when hit, and the fact that enemies deal damage not only with their attacks but also just by touch, making it very easy to get hit by an attack, and then get "hit" as you try to run past them out of the corner, stunning you or even knocking you back into the death-corner. But, was a very rare problem to have, and never in boss fights, funny enough. Overall, a fun action combat system that's pretty easy to learn but does eventually let you tear it up, if you fully grasp it--it's certainly not going to be particularly challenging to anyone with experience in the genre. As an RPG, it's very basic. Basic story, basic characters, basic upgrade system (pretty much just linear improvements to the weapons and armor you start with), basic accessories (you can equip two, and they either raise a base stat or the drop rate of items, pretty much), etc. You can also eventually add elemental bonuses to your weapons and armor (separately, so you can buff against fire while dealing extra ice damage). It's all pretty straight-forward. One issue I do have is a balance issue in that you can keep upgrading your gear, fairly cheaply, to quite high numbers--it is actually possible to be radically over-powered over time, so if you play it, resist the temptation to upgrade all gear at the smithy as soon as possible, and space them out instead. You can't just skip upgrades though, because it's the sort of game where your damage will fall off extremely quickly if you don't keep up. I think this was an oversight in design. Otherwise, the systems are all pretty much fine. Also note, this is one of those games where you need to collect hundreds, thousands, of bits and bobs dropped by enemies and rocks and trees throughout the world, as these are necessary for upgrades. You CAN sell them for cash, but try not to do that very much; it's easier to get cash than it is to remember where to get some of the materials. Exploration and questing; yeah, there really isn't much of this. Not really. Dungeons are quite linear with only occasional treasure areas off optional paths, and very rarely actually have a fork when you have to go one way to wrap back around to the other side. That said, I do like the areas; despite being small, they do interconnect and wrap around themselves to a degree, and it rewards backtracking at least a little bit, but never anything game-changing or truly missable. Questing, however, is very bleh; it's the type that either you'll be fine with, or hate, but no one will love it. There are TONS of side-quests, all very short, which get you probably a majority of the EXP you'll get in the game, tons of money, and also upgrade shops and therefore allow you to get better upgrades and stuff. The notifications for these are a little bit slow, and it's surprising how much dialogue they all have; I mean, there are nearly 200 of these, and they ALL have unique dialogue, so definitely alot of effort here. Still, it's alot of very basic fetch and kill quests. Writing...yeah, not really worth talking about. Starts out fine, standard JRPG stuff, and never really rises above that. It's not BAD, but it definitely sticks to the tropes, characters are simple, twists are telegraphed way in advance, it's sugar-coated, etc. If the game was 60 hours long, or more, I'd probably have gotten quite sick of it, but it's more like 20 hours, probably less if you don't play as slow as I tend to do. I don't normally talk much about graphics, but here, they really are gorgeous and do accentuate the game nicely. Running through the game's few dungeons over and over is far less annoying than it sounds because everything looks so beautiful and alive. Animations are also smooth as butter yet controls are tight and responsive. I completely understand anyone who didn't care for the game's simple story and questing structure, as well as limited selection of enemies and locations, but this is a rare instance where it's so beautiful, and plays so smoothly, that I was okay with alot of repetition and backtracking. In a way, it reminds me of Cuphead; not that it's the same art-style, but how smooth and detailed it all is makes it very easy to get sucked in by the charm of it all--it isn't just bare-minimum utilitarian graphics like alot of lower-budget JRPGs. All-in-all, I'm happy with the purchase. It's the sort of game that if it was bloated out to 60 hours with the price of a full AAA game, I'd definitely be complaining and saying the game has outstayed it's welcome; but for like $10 on sale, it's a great purchase for a relaxing game to clear over a long weekend. I don't expect I will remember much specifically from the game over time, or ever feel a strong desire to replay it like I do the real classics, but I will always remember I had a good time with it, just enjoyable for the senses all around.

This game is a prequel to Eiyuden Chronicle : Hundred Heroes. It is an action RPG from the same creator who made Suikoden, one of my all-time favorite series. The game is quite casual, you control three characters who help a struggling town by completing quests and advancing the story. There aren't many enemy types, but they have different elements. Boss fights are a bit tougher, but I only found the game truly challenging on hard mode. You can upgrade your equipment and weapons using materials dropped by enemies or collected while exploring. It's not a large game, but I enjoyed it.

Well, after i finished 100% of this game it's time for a review :D First and foremost: I tend to enjoy grindy games from time to time, so i spend more time here than the average to do the 100% achievements. If you're old like me and remember games like "Ragnarok Offline" or the newer "Dust: An Elysian Tail": This is quite comparable. It's a little sidescrolling hack'n'slash RPG that evolves solely around slaying enemies and collection ressources for quests. It's centered around a single town acting as base area, where you can buy stuff, upgrade your characters weapons, armor and runes(the elemental system of the game) and accept / finish your quests. This town is quite barren when you start the game, without much to do there, but you build and expand it with the main quest and little side quests you do. With every building upgrade you unlock new upgrades for your characters or new stuff to buy, so it's quite nice to see progress while doing your stuff. The quests are, in a nice way, forgettable, as well as the story is. Nothing really special, but cute when you have the nerve to read them all. Some dialogues are, in my eyes, unnecessarily long. You get stamps for quest completion, complete stamp cards with those and get new stamp cards afterwards until you have all 160 stamps and all cards full. When you finish the game the first time, your last stamp card isn't completely finished, but the game is so nice and saves automatically after the the last boss, switches on "hard mode" and overwhelms you with a bunch of final quests to finish your card and after that even more quests to collect enough money for everything you need to finish it finally. There is a little fishing minigame, just mashing right button combinations and a little combo system that grows over time with your character upgrades. It's quite satisfying to stomp minibosses with those into the ground. But beware: As i wrote initially, i tend to enjoy grindy games and most the game is pure grinding, real simple pure grinding. Choose an area you want to farm stuff for upgrades or a quest, choose your accessories and elemental runes, that are not really needed until hard mode, fill your magic pouch with health potions and go grind all the stuff you want and need. And well that's it. Got it for around 4-5€ and had 30 hours fun with it, so it was worth my while. So yeah, i can recommend it, if you want a game you can play in short bursts without putting much brain power into it. I don't know if it's a prologue to the main game or anything you want to remember when starting that though. EDIT: Just started Hundred Heroes and you get benefits from a complete save of Rising on your System :) No idea what that changes in the game, since i've never played it before, but at least it's recognized :)

This game should be taken for what it is: an appetizer for Hundred Heroes. The game is short, a bit clumsy (meh animations, meh jump mechanics and feel), very very simple (I never died, nor did I ever need to heal during battle), with characters that might be amusing but are stereotypical. And yet, all things considered, it works (helped by the low price, of course): the story has that final twist that leaves you with a happy smile on your face despite everything. The game flows smoothly with little resistance, but the somewhat absurd yet engaging story makes you want to see what's behind the next door, what the next subquest will ask of you. I made the mistake of playing Rising after Hundred Heroes: it would’ve been better the other way around, but even so, it remains enjoyable in its own way. Let’s be clear: this game only really makes sense as a way to pave the road for the world and characters of Hundred Heroes. Don’t play it if you don’t plan to play that one. But if you do, at least give Rising a chance: it starts slow but gets better, leading to a finale that’s worth it.
