Dust & Neon is a fast-paced twin-stick shooter that successfully blends roguelite progression with a futuristic western setting full of robotic enemies, explosive gunfights, and nonstop action. The game immediately stands out because of its unusual combination of dusty frontier aesthetics and neon-lit science fiction technology. Instead of traditional cowboys battling bandits, players step into the boots of a revived gunslinger fighting against armies of machines across a ruined mechanical frontier. The concept may sound strange at first, but the game commits fully to its futuristic western identity, creating an experience that feels both stylish and surprisingly immersive. The story itself remains fairly simple, focusing on a lone gunslinger resurrected to take revenge against robot-controlled forces that have overtaken the world. Narrative depth is not the main priority here, but the setting still provides enough atmosphere to make the journey engaging. Dust & Neon uses its worldbuilding primarily to support the gameplay, and that approach works because the environments, enemies, and overall presentation consistently reinforce the feeling of surviving in a violent post-apocalyptic frontier ruled by machines. The world feels dangerous, harsh, and chaotic, which perfectly complements the game’s relentless combat pacing. Combat is easily the strongest part of the experience. While many twin-stick shooters rely purely on constant movement and rapid firing, Dust & Neon introduces a manual reload system that dramatically changes how firefights play out. Instead of instantly reloading with a button press, players must load bullets into their weapon one at a time while under pressure from enemies. This mechanic adds tension and strategy to every battle because poorly timed reloads can quickly become fatal. Players are constantly forced to think about positioning, cover usage, and timing while balancing aggressive attacks with moments of retreat. The gunplay feels incredibly satisfying thanks to responsive controls and strong weapon variety. Revolvers, rifles, shotguns, and energy-based weapons all behave differently, encouraging players to experiment with multiple combat styles. Some weapons excel at rapid close-range destruction, while others focus on precision and long-distance damage. Randomized loot drops and upgrade systems ensure that each run offers different combinations of weapons and abilities, which helps maintain replayability. Finding a powerful new weapon during a difficult mission can completely change the pace of a run and create moments where the player suddenly transforms into an unstoppable force. Movement mechanics are equally impressive. The game allows players to dash, slide, and dive around the battlefield while using environmental cover to survive intense firefights. These systems create a smooth rhythm where combat feels fluid and aggressive without becoming chaotic beyond control. Enemy encounters constantly pressure players to stay mobile, especially during boss fights that fill the screen with projectiles and dangerous attacks. The combination of mobility and manual reloading gives Dust & Neon a unique combat identity that feels distinct from most other roguelites. The roguelite progression structure keeps the experience addictive even after repeated failures. Every run rewards players with upgrades, resources, and unlockable enhancements that improve future attempts. Permanent upgrades gradually increase survivability and combat effectiveness, creating a satisfying sense of long-term progression even when individual missions end in defeat. The game also offers a large selection of weapon modifications and character upgrades, encouraging experimentation and allowing players to tailor their builds toward different strategies. Visually, Dust & Neon does an excellent job combining western imagery with futuristic design. Dusty towns, abandoned industrial facilities, glowing technology, and mechanical enemies all coexist within a world that feels both familiar and unique. The colorful lighting effects and neon accents help the environments stand out while keeping the action visually exciting. Combat sequences become especially intense when explosions, laser fire, and enemy attacks begin filling the battlefield. Despite the visual chaos, the game generally remains readable enough for players to react quickly during difficult encounters. The soundtrack further strengthens the atmosphere by mixing electronic music with western-inspired themes. The music adds energy to firefights while maintaining the game’s futuristic frontier identity. Sound effects are also satisfying, with weapons carrying enough impact to make every shot feel meaningful. Reload animations, enemy destruction, and environmental audio all contribute to the sense of immersion during combat-heavy sequences. However, the game is not completely free of problems. One of its biggest weaknesses is repetition. While the core gameplay remains entertaining for a long time, the overall mission structure begins to feel familiar after extended play sessions. Objectives and environments do not evolve dramatically throughout the experience, which can make later runs blur together despite the randomized elements. The strong combat system helps compensate for this issue, but players may eventually notice the lack of significant variety in mission design. Difficulty balancing can also become inconsistent. Certain encounters feel heavily dependent on weapon quality and upgrade combinations, occasionally making progress feel tied more to luck than skill. Some bosses and enemy groups become frustrating when paired with weaker equipment, particularly during later stages where enemy aggression increases dramatically. Although the challenge creates satisfying victories, it may become discouraging for players who prefer smoother progression. The narrative is another area where the game feels somewhat underdeveloped. The world and aesthetic are memorable, but the story itself never reaches the same level of depth as the gameplay systems. Players looking for emotional storytelling or complex character development may find the experience lacking in narrative substance. Dust & Neon clearly prioritizes action above all else, and while that decision works for the gameplay, it leaves the world feeling less explored than it could have been. Even with these flaws, Dust & Neon remains an impressive and highly enjoyable roguelite shooter. Its manual reload system, responsive movement, rewarding progression, and stylish setting combine to create an experience that feels fresh within an increasingly crowded genre. The game’s fast combat and satisfying gunplay make every successful run exciting, while the futuristic western atmosphere gives it a memorable identity that helps it stand apart from more conventional action titles. For players who enjoy twin-stick shooters and roguelites focused on skill-based combat, Dust & Neon delivers a thrilling experience packed with chaotic battles, rewarding upgrades, and stylish presentation. While repetition and limited narrative depth prevent it from reaching the very top of the genre, its excellent gameplay systems and distinctive setting make it a consistently entertaining adventure. 6.5/10 Dust and Neon is a flawed but good game. Pros: * The gameplay is fun. The manual reload mechanic is really cool, and it gives a deliberate feel to the gameplay (at least parts of it). I had several golden moments where I felt like John Wick; a master of precision, walking into a room, evaluating the number enemies, and taking them out, one by one. * The sound design is also good; guns generally sound punchy, pickups feel good to collect. * 5 of the 6 bosses were really fun, and I found them just challenging enough to be fun without feeling unbeatable. * The art style is cartoony and cool. Cons: * Money is ridiculously scarce for some reason. I spent 50% of my playtime robbing trains, because those missions give you the most money. * Because of this, it's far too punishing when you lose. If you've gotten some really cool guns, they're just gone. Good guns are expensive, so it's possible to lose several times in a row and be stuck with garbage weapons because you just can't afford anything else. * The lack of cash also makes the game grindy. You can't afford weapons or perks, so you need to grind missions to get money to afford better gear to take down the bosses which basically require better gear to take out. * One of the bosses was all about dodging hazards coming out of the floor. and I did not find this fun at all. It felt incredibly cheap to lose to, and if you don't invest skill points into the faster dodge recharge, I feel like this boss would be next to impossible to play against. Conclusion: The game looks good, sounds good, and has good gameplay. But the poor in-game economy makes it kind of fragile at times, and it forces you to grind missions in order to not go broke. That said, if this game looks interesting to you, I actually do recommend checking it out, especially if it's on sale. It had plenty of moments to shine, and when it did, it was pretty cool.

Games seems good at first, but get grindy and repetitive eventually.

Gateway drug into Roguelite games. It's very simple and repetitive, but still triggers that dopamine release when you kill a horde of enemies and collect a bunch of loot. I wish the maps had some randomisation in terms of layout to keep it more fresh. Perfect for short sessions. Runs perfectly on Steam Deck. I have a couple of critiques: * bomb run missions spike up in difficulty too much, I hardly managed to complete a couple of medium difficulty, I haven't even tried the hard ones; * challenge maps also spike up a lot compared to normal missions, especially second stage forward * it was quite easy to find the perfect guns and stick with those, with no incentive to switch. I did out of boredom and suffered the downgrade, regretting the switch despite I kept on upgrading my stats, which were making the guns better. (I managed to find the guns again and allowed me to get through the bosses quite easily.) * the special chips and drinks that upgrade your stats for a mission or two are easily skippable for the most part until you get to last bosses or need to tackle the most difficult map modes.
