An Ocarina of Time for the modern day - and with its own totally unique twist. Seriously though, this is the first time I've had a game make me want to play another game (LoZ OoT obvi) AND scratch the itch to play that game all at the same time. I'm normally a shop-your-wishlist kinda girl, but I randomly stumbled upon this while looking for SOMETHING to catch my interest because I was SO BORED and figured "eh, sure." SUCH a good call. I just finished my first run through and I'll definitely be back for seconds! While I can't help but draw comparisons to OoT, Dungeons of Hinterberg stands entirely on its own merits. The art style is engaging and playful but doesn't overwhelm, and the gameplay is fun and engaging. I played through on normal mode, which was perfect for me, but I appreciate that there's an easy and a hard mode (which I might try on my next playthrough). The music was fun too (though I admit it was a bit weird to be walking through town after beating the last dungeon and having the normal evening music play). What I really appreciated as (I hate to admit it) an adult was the pacing. The game is sort of broken out like a text-based adventure game, where days are broken into morning, noon, evening, and night chunks. Each chunk has its own actions to perform (ordering breakfast in the morning, open-world style adventuring + dungeons in the noon chunk, shopping & socializing in the evening, and recapping, lounging, and going to sleep at night). When a chunk ends, time passes, but by and large you can spend infinite real time between the start and end of a chunk. It always gave me good stopping places to put the game down and get ready to go to bed. Which, despite being in my late 30s, is a skill I have yet to master without such boundaries. I also really liked the puzzles - and they're probably why I am reminded so viscerally of OoT. I consider myself a pretty good puzzle-solver, but there were more than a handful that gave me trouble and two where I had to just put my Deck down and walk away until the next day. I LOVED it. Though I'm pretty sure there was at least one or two that I solved in a way that the game did not intend... Oh well. My only real complaint was that some of the location bosses were surprisingly easy, including the final game boss... or maybe I was just grossly overpowered by the time I ended my game, which is entirely possible lol I paid full price for this game and was happy to do so - it's well worth the cost. I'll definitely go back to it at least once more, and I'm already planning on gifting it to someone for an upcoming birthday. I'll be nominating it for all the awards I can come Steam Award Nomination season too. I strongly recommend this gorgeous game - it's a joy from start to finish.

Really early on, I thought this wouldn't be fun. I was worried that the social interactions would be stupidly trivial and wasn't sure I could cope with the art style. Fairly quickly I fell into the groove and found the game cozy, comforting, and refreshing. I fell in love with the art style. And I discovered that, as the social interactions advanced, most player dialog got meaningful - struggling with real life issues (sometimes in humorous ways). Especially the inner monologue of the main character, working through her issues. The dungeons are grouped into four separate areas with different geography, season, and feel. It felt like you were visiting four different places in the world. The thing I found interesting was that each area had its own set of two magic spells you could use, unique to that area and only functional in that area. The spells were useful in both combat and puzzle solving. Each area's different terrain showed up in the dungeons there. These things (different area feel, different dungeon terrain, and different spells) kept things from being boring or repetitive as you work through all the dungeons. The dungeon mechanics seemed to be an actual 50/50 balance between combat and puzzles. And, when set on Vacation (easy) mode, was well tuned to me. (I like a little combat but nothing that actually costs me something or causes my frequent death. I prefer story, exploration, and puzzles.) I found the puzzles frequently challenging but almost always something I could figure out. (I think I only Googled an explanation once.) I'm not a serious gamer (combat or puzzles), so perhaps this game will feel trivial for others. But I'd hope that the cozy, comforting-ness of it would still shine for those who value that. Bottom line is I loved it.

Another indie game doing what it does better than most AAA games. Combat - Excellent Story - Very Good Puzzles - Very Good Exploration - Very Good I don't really have a bad thing to say about this game, really. Scratches every itch it tries to scratch. It's worth your time and your money. If the trailer makes you think its a game for you, it probably is!

Overall a good time, but can be tedious toward the final hours. The art style and puzzle mechanics shine the most, but some balance issues and monotony make combat feel like a real chore. Don't go into this expecting a Zelda-like; the skills gained to help with traversal and puzzles are basically limited to each major region, and combat skills ("conduits") can be swapped out at just about any time (and are a bit frustrating in their own way). The social and loot aspects are generally pretty light, but play into character progression nicely. Props to the dev team for the dungeon puzzles and mind-bendy perspective/gravity shifts -- the dungeons themselves all felt varied enough to be enjoyable. The story certainly leaves room for a sequel, and it would be great to see some of these mechanics fleshed out even more!

Dungeons of Hinterberg is the suprise of the year for me so far. Playing as a lovely young woman, you arrive in an alpine village where 25 magical dungeons appeared, filled with monsters, puzzles and other challenges. These dungeons are located in several different regions that you can explore freely. Each region gives you unique magical powers, which you can use to defeat monsters, solve puzzles and to discover new paths and loot. The design of the dungeons is truly excellent, with lots of variation and clever ideas. Both the combat and puzzles are never frustrating, making this game a blast to play on a lazy summer evening. But there's more: each night you visit Hinterberg, where you can meet the locals and other monster slayers. By helping htem with their personal problems, you gain their friendship which is rewarded with new abilities, upgrades and skills. If you don't feel like socializing, you can go to the cinema or relax in the local welness facilities to imrpove some of your stats. And there are plenty of shops to buy potions, weapons and armor, gifts for your friends, enchant your equipment and so much more. It's incredible how a small team can make such an extensive game with so many lovely details. I enjoyed every minute of it and can't recommend it enough. Well done Microbird Games!
