Dragon Quest Pokemon is another super neat spin off title. There are 20 different areas to explore, and gather new monsters, and hundreds of different monsters to collect. You then take a bunch of these monsters and use monster synthesis to create new ones you can't find on the maps. There are also a number of accessories to equip to your monsters for extra abilities and stats. There are two different arenas to battle other monster trainers as well as an online arena though not sure any one still frequents that. The story is fairly long and fun to play through but not exactly a riveting tale. Overall this has been a fun experience!

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is an amazing game, one I'm glad to play after having no DQM games for 14 years. First off, this is NOT a Dragon Quest game, it's a Dragon Quest Monsters game. It has all the charm of Dragon Quest but follows a different battle system and mechanics. It's a creature collector with a unique twist; Synthesising/combining monsters to get even stronger ones eventually making your way to the final bosses of the main series. The game features a new Reverse Search feature to help you see what you can make and a new dungeon called the Mole Hole where you can scout (catch) every monster you've ever obtained. And to touch on scouting it is RNG. You do a show of force to try and recruit your monster based on the strength of your monsters compared to the other. You can influence this by buffing your own team and debuffing the enemy but, most of the time it'll still be up to chance. You can disable autosave and savescum all you'd like, however. The story is great, it's a sort of retelling of DQ4 from the point of the antagonist, who you play as. The story starts off serviceable. Nothing special but gets the job done. But, it does get quite good. I could sing the praises of this game all day; the charm, the visuals, the music, the battling. This game does very little wrong. But, what is it that it does wrong? Well, some synthesises (?) require 4 monsters. So you need to do 2 pairs of 2 then combine the resulting pairs. Reverse Search does NOT help you here, so you need to look them up. There could be more end game, though the main story will run you 20-30 hours depending, and going for all achievements and synthesises another 10-20 on top of that. Still plenty of value. And that's it. Yes, those are my only gripes. Get this game and PLEASE give us more DQM.

I'm actually a bit shocked at the lack of marketing for this game. I think a lot of people who've never played any DQM/DWM would really enjoy this game, especially with the success of Palworld people are hungry for quality games in the monster collection genre. I think this game really delivers. I'm equally shocked and grateful it was brought to PC, and works great on my SteamDeck. I'm not sure why the game is only "playable," it was originally a Switch game and the Switch players don't seem to be complaining about the text size. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is the definitive Dragon Quest Monsters experience. I was a big fan of the GBC Dragon Warrior Monsters (preferred it to Pokemon thanks to the great monster breeding system, now called synthesis), but I have to admit my feelings of that game are clouded by nostalgia. Not this game. It's got modern yet still stylized graphics, great new quality of life features like fast forward and autobattle (for the easy nonboss fights), and way more monsters than the old games.

I would HIGHLY recommend this as someone who has basically never touched any Dragon Quest game before this. I basically get to see 500+ creatures I've never seen before and collect them and combine them which leads to being CONSTANTLY surprised. Its something not even modern pokemon manages to do for me so FANTASTIC game for non DQ people IMO

Dragon Quest Monsters is the quiet kid in the back of the class in the realm of Mons games: it doesn't speak up often, and you rarely ever notice it. But when it wants to apply itself... I own this on Switch as well, full disclosure. I'm a Dragon Quest fanatic through and through. But I'm also very picky about my Mons games having been in the scene since day 1 as a kid on the elementary school playground. Even back then DQM was doing what Pokemon was doing but better, and the trend continues with The Dark Prince. *In its own ways* mind. The meat of the game comes in 2 flavors: an 'Another Side' retelling of DQ4 as a competent story mode to keep you going, and the appeal of collecting monsters from across the bestiary of Dragon Quest. And that does, in fact, include bosses. Want Dhoulmagus and Calasmos standing side by side? Go ham. Want a giant Krystalinda from DQ11? Who the hell doesn't, go nuts, she was the meta caster in the Switch version. The monster breeding is where the game sparkles. It takes an appreciation of Dragon Quest's monster history, but there's still a thrill regardless seeing your synthesis attempts finally see that coveted next step up in the ranks. A slime and a Dragon-family member for a Drake Slime, or a Demon-family member and a Bunicorn for a Robber Rabbit, or even tripping over the incidental recipe for a very niche monster along the synthesis tree. Each monster has 3 slots for skill lists, letting you customize as you like. Some trees confer passive bonuses, some provide attacks, others provide statuses, and some can even evolve into further and more powerful trees if you master them. You won't be battling with other players, but then there's a very discernible 'meta team' that would quite demonstrably make online battling a royal headache. That said, there's the Quickfire Contest, which actually has the same vibe as DQM's original tournaments in that you can't directly control your monsters, and rewards you with items even if your team barely ekes out any wins. The endgame is all about that full bestiary, and the best beasties to fill said bestiary. Honestly the thing that tips this over into a wholehearted endorsement is that all of the Switch version's DLC has been crammed into this as well, while carving 20 bucks off of the asking price. 40 bucks is a complete steal. If you like mons games and you're curious about DQ, go for it. If you like mons games? Still give it a feel.
