Beautiful remake of the childhood classic for me. Improved in almost every way: gorgeous graphics, voice acting, sprite animations, and general quality of life improvements. The soundtrack is also something to mention; they used the music from the orchestral symphony that was performed many years ago and IT IS INCREDIBLE. That said, the game feels a little easier that what I remember from 20+ years ago, but there is a difficulty modifier you can add if you want more of a challenge. It could also be because I'm a grown adult that has better decision making skills than 8 year old me. Bought it for the nostalgia honestly. I loved the original Dragon Quest 3. Some of the censorship decisions that were made are a little annoying, but honestly the overall experience is so refreshing that I look past them. I look forward to the remake of Dragon Quest 1 & 2. EDIT: Post 80-Hour review addition: Still great, the overall experience was wonderful. After 80 hours I certainly feel like I got my money's worth, but again, I bought this for nostalgia. There was some content that was cut from the originals, mainly the Game Track/Parchisi board. Unfortunate as I was looking forward to replaying those portions, but it's not game breaking as you can earn the best weapons from the new post-main story dungeon/content. The new Monster Wrangler class is CRACKED, especially if you complete all the Monster Rescues... If you're new to Dragon Quest or have never played the original, understand that the original trilogy marked THE beginning of the JRPG genre, predating Final Fantasy by a year or two. That said, the story and mechanics are 'vanilla' compared to RPGs of today because... well, this game is over 30 years old. Given the age of the source game, I think the devs did a great job with this remake. Certainly worth playing, even if you pick it up at a discount. The biggest let down for me was When you defeat Zoma and watch the epilogue, the final credit roll (in the original) read as 'Thus, the legend was born.' with the crescendo of the DQ3 theme playing, which was so freaking epic when I first experienced it. They changed the ending credit roll to read 'Thus, the Seeds of Salvation were sown.' I guess someone wanted to tie in the subtitle of the game into the ending, but its... SO LAME compared to the original. It's even more frustrating considering that the final steam achievement has the original ending referenced "A Legend is Born". . All in all, I still highly recommend this game.

If you're thinking about buying this game because you like DQ11, I think it's important you understand this game is very different from DQ11. This is very much a traditional RPG where you walk in the overworld and get caught in a random encounter. If you're going into this expecting a modern RPG experience, you will absolutely be disappointed. However, if you're like me, and you grew up on this type of RPG and love this type of RPG dearly, you will undoubtedly love this game. DQ3 takes me back to a time I miss in RPGs, where you as the player weren't really concerned with stopping the big evil bad guy. Yeah he's out there, but there's a whole world to explore, go fight him later. To me the old Dragon Quest games (1-3) aren't so much about completing the story as it is seeing everything in the world, finding all the weird characters whose names are puns and have a funny accent, seeing all the monsters and finding every chest. This game tells you "hey theres a bad guy out there, go and get strong so you can fight him", then sends you out into the world. And I love that. Put this game on the hardest difficulty, go out and see everything there is to see, enjoy the music, play around with weird builds. This isn't a high stress game, it's a fun and simple RPG. Don't rush it, savor it. And Square. Please. For the love of God. Bring the other ports to Steam. I know you have DQ1-8 sitting there ready to ship, they're all on mobile, what are you waiting for? Dragon Quest genuinely has the ability to compete with Final Fantasy in the west, you just need to give it room to grow on the proper platforms.

This remake is far and away the definitive way to play Dragon Quest 3. The music and visuals are amazing, so is the new content and QOL changes, but I don't think it's enough to justify a $60 price tag. That said it's still a great game, just wait until it's on sale if you're not a hardcore fan. Regarding the "woke" controversy, your protagonist and their companions are no longer gendered, however, your protagonist is still limited in the traits they can have based on whether or not they are a male or female?? It seemed to me as if they made these changes last minute, it's just a pointless change. I'd rather they have worked on a party chat system similar to the later entries in the series, but what can you do? Overall a great remake, definitely check it out if you're a fan of the series or of great jrpgs.

This is absolutely phenomenal. I grew up with this series, have played every version of DQ1-3 that exist (was *not* happy with the Switch versions...), and I'm happy to say we've finally reached an era where Remakes are (sometimes) no longer a cash-in. No, this game was rebuilt from the ground up and is now the definitive version of Dragon Quest 3. (Anyone complaining about "woke mobs" coming for pronouns... just ignore those reviews.) The graphics are beyond gorgeous. There are so many ridiculous little details - light flowing through stained glass windows of a church onto the cobbles below, fireflies in the forests at night, dust motes in the light in towers, and the hero/ine carrying a tiny lantern in caves... there were real blood, sweat and tears put into this. The music is quite good, although some of it sounds cribbed from the String Quartet album, not that I'm complaining. There were only so many songs on that album, and with Sugiyama sadly passed, it was probably for the best that they use what already existed. There are so many QoL enhancements and alterations - hidden points of interest and items on the map (that are very much worth hunting down), a monster arena akin to DQ8's and I'm sure many other things I have yet to discover. I expected a nostalgic stroll through the world of DQ3, and now suddenly I feel like I'm in a completely different - yet familiar - experience. The $60 price tag might be offputting to some for a game that is "older," but I promise you, if this is your first DQ experience, it'll be a good one.

DQIII on the GBC was the most influential game for little 8 year old me more than 2 decades ago. Growing up I had replayed DQIII so many times and spent so many late nights scouring every inch of this game world and it's characters, I'm fairly certain I could play this game blindfolded. The feeling when booting up this remake was something I don't think I'll experience again. That alone has made this worth it. The art and music are beautiful. I am not far enough to comment on anything more. Should the game stay true to the original in the form of content/story, than this game is one of the best and is worth every cent and then some.
