The story of this game began when Orontes engineers were prototyping a physics based driving model. When filling in the properties of rubber tires, they accidentally used data meant for wet soap. The team got a good laugh! It was so slippery you almost couldn't drive a straight line, let alone survive a few corners. They immediately knew they had to make an entire game out of this. They went ahead and bought an asset pack with two trees, a peculiar looking red alien plant and some yellow mushrooms. The rest is history. Finally ExoCross is here, the Dark Souls of driving games.

Finally the racing game DRAG was meant to be! Easier handling, full vehicle collision physics and a new campaign vs AI. And it still runs perfect with vulkan native on Linux! *Updating this review to say that while all the above is true and makes for a great singleplayer game the multiplayer was a huge letdown. It's currently matchmaking only. It has no private games or choosing regions and from the one match I was able to join it appeared to be nothing but short time runs without any player vehicle collisions. I hope they are able to improve this in the future.

So after release I will say this: it feels solid. like an IP in the 2000s that could expand. its not full price, AI is a little weak, and its not some massive game. What is there is a solid story, environment, graphics and soundtrack. Orontes did well and I hope to see more going forward. [like even just the object design for billboards and stuff is super nice]

ExoCross Release As more a casual racer that prefers arcade style games, this feels pretty fun so far. The driving feels rewarding and although a bit difficult (with a lot of the assists on and using controller), I want to keep getting better because its satisfying. The art style is one of the coolest I've seen in a while. I like how the game is accessible, but the skill ceiling is also extremely high. Would be cool to see some new creative game modes added over time. Overall between the art style, driving, sound track,... etc this game has a really cool and creative vibe.

TLDR: This game has a lot of potential and so long as the developers continue adding stuff I recommend the game. I do feel there is some room for improvement and there is currently some flat out lies on the store page right now. (No multiplayer, no leaderboards (sort of)) so I would NOT pay full price for this game until those are fixed. # The good - Graphics The game looks great and I love the art style (reminds me of RUST if it was a racing game). - Soundtrack The music is great, all good picks but I agree with others that I wouldn't mind some more of it. - Good difficulty I like the difficulty, the Diamond times are hard to get on longer tracks but not overly so. - Linux support It might not be official but this game runs a treat on Linux and to top it off, even selects my correct GPU (something that almost always gives me frustration) # The Tweaks (Just little things I'd like to see tweaked) - Car handling I feel like the car is maybe a bit too slidey. This is fine but a problem is on longer/faster tracks the slides are hard to recover from and it sometimes feels unpredictable. I find myself just sort of trying to deal with the line I get because I feel like correcting to the other side of the road, even on a straightaway, is risky at high speed. - Car handling part 2 Something that I think could benefit is more oversteer on banked turns. This one could be taken with a grain of salt but the car doesn't feel like it handles much differently on bankings so just something to think about. # The Bad - Multiplayer removed Multiplayer got removed back in March 2023 and has not been reinstated. This is a problem because the store page is currently promising that this is a feature. If dedicated servers can't make a comeback from a financial perspective, maybe a steamworks p2p networking can be implemented instead. (See fuzzysteamworks for some guidance) - Leaderboards broken Again, store page says there are leaderboards but they would not load for me. They do however work for the special events. - Car customization doesn't work It HAS customization, which is good, but it still picks a random car when running challenges. Currently challenges seem to be the main mode of the game so... that needs to be fixed. (It does work in Time Attack and Special Events) I have worked on and play an absolute crapton of racing games, if you buy this, you'll definitely have a good time and I hope the developers can give it the time it needs in the oven because I want this game to exist in it's full glory.
