I generally like games from Frogwares, but Dracula: Origin didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Despite its potential as a point-and-click adventure, I can only call it average at best. The game loosely adapts Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a story I love, but this version feels lackluster. You play as Professor Van Helsing, traveling through various locations to find and kill Dracula. The environments are nice to look at: the 2D backgrounds are detailed and atmospheric, and the blend of 3D characters works well visually. The story moves at a slow pace though, and despite the solid atmosphere, it sometimes bored me. The ending doesn’t make up for the slow progression either; it was abrupt and somewhat open. On top of that, the slow character animations annoyed me. You can’t run anywhere, which makes backtracking tedious. Speaking of backtracking, it’s one of the game’s biggest issues. The game is highly linear, divided into separate chapters/regions, and you can’t revisit earlier areas. Often, the game locks you into one location and refuses to let you leave until you’ve interacted with everything. For example, in the museum, I was stuck until I examined every item. You also frequently backtrack to the same places, sometimes two or three times, and yet there are also some screens that are empty and serve only as pathways to the next area. I liked that some screens can be accessed from different directions, offering a new angle of the same space with other items or details. On the puzzle side, the game fares better. The puzzles are logical, which fits this type of game, though a few were tricky enough that I used pen and paper to solve them. I appreciated the balance here; no overly wacky or nonsensical solutions like in other point-and-click games. Pixel hunting is present but manageable since you can reveal hotspots with the spacebar. The voice acting is okay, though not without flaws. Van Helsing’s delivery often misses the mark, either overacting or lacking the right tone for the dialogue. Still, the entire game is fully voiced, which is a nice touch. Dialogue itself is fine but nothing remarkable. There’s also a lot of reading: letters, newspaper clippings, and other documents that you collect in a journal. The journal also neatly stores all the dialogues you’ve had, which can be useful for revisiting clues or refreshing your memory. It took me around 2-3 weeks (8 hours playtime) to finish; not because it was difficult, but because I kept putting it down to play something else. At least I didn’t encounter any bugs, and for the 0.99€ sale price, I can’t say I regret buying it.

pros ✅ stunning looking and detailed graphics which aged quite well ✅ character models and cutscenes looks decent ✅ there are nice variety and many complex, challenging puzzles. there are also inventory puzzles you can combine some items ✅ when you press the space button, hotspots are highlighted, so there is no need to pixelhunt ✅ a decent and intriguing gothic story based on Bram Stoker's Dracula ✅ background musics perfectly fits the each chapter's atmosphere ✅ there is a nice variety of interesting and creepy side characters ✅ mild horror elements and creepy atmospheric environments ✅ you can travel to plenty of different and interesting cities and countries like London, Cairo, Austria, and Transylvania ✅ decent voice acting ✅ decent length ✅ game drops some cards cons ❌slow character animations. main character also can't run and slowy walk everywhere ❌the resolution is fixed at a 4:3 aspect ratio and can't be changed ❌janky mechanics in the first map puzzle. you have to draw precise connections between different places on the map; otherwise, it didn't trigger to the next scene ❌most puzzles require some sort of esoteric knowledge and thinking. that makes the puzzle solutions really obscure ❌some really time-wasting and tedious-to-solve minigame-type puzzles ❌iffy english translation with odd phrasings ❌very linear gameplay. If you forgot to do something, you'll be stuck. ❌there are no steam achievements Overall, this is hard but a decent and enjoyable old-school point-and-click adventure game with a classic horror story.

so i played this game years ago. it's good, creepy and pretty difficult at points. over all it's great for people who love puzzles. though fair warning the character models are pretty stiff for being 3d but that's cause it was when this stuff was still pretty new-ish. want to get the rest of the games from this dev cause games like this seem to be getting harder and harder to find.

I would only recommend this to people that really enjoy point-click adventure games. It contains many difficult puzzles, and it requires significant attention to detail. I stuck with it, because I found the story interesting.

I enjoyed the game overall but there were a few puzzles that I had to look up online guides because I couldn't figure them out. I realised way too late into the game that you could press spacebar to reveal hot spots on the screen instead of tirelessly pixelhunting which is frustrating. Also it sucks when I already figured out the solutions to some puzzles/problems but the main protagonist Dr Van Helsing hasn't figured it yet due to a missed dialogue option/a hotspot not inspected, making my stuck in that area wandering around. Another thing is that sometimes the items combinations don't make too much sense. On the plus side, the visuals are nice for the time when the game came out, voice acting is decent and the typical Dracula storyline still kept me engaged the whole time. Although the ending was kinda abrupt.
