Had a lot of fun playing this, won't say it has the greatest mechanics but they never bothered me. Lots of characters that are great to interact with. Great dating sim (:

I actually have a lot to say about this game. I don't necessarily want to say it in a Steam review. If you're the kind of person that might have an interest in this kind of game, play it. Get the 18+ patch. Adjust the walk speed in the options to make the overworld segments seem less janky. If I spoiled any of the details that someone interested in Dokyusei might find by playing it, I would be doing them a disservice. Instead, I will provide a list of Pro Tips that you might see in a late 90s/ early 00s GamePro magazine. Pro Tip: If you're going to meet the fortune teller, make it the first thing you do that day. They could potentially "predict" an event you've already triggered if you go later. Pro Tip: The characters in the game are aware of your gaze. In some cases, you can use this to your advantage. Pro Tip: If a wizard in a fourth-dimensional house offers you the opportunity to rewind time, it might be worth it to reject the offer. Pro Tip: The freaks come out at night. Pro Tip: You can hang out in front of the movie theater in Yabuki without buying a ticket or being accompanied by a date. Pro Tip: What's that in Chiharu's window? Pro Tip: If the way forward does not seem clear, examine everything in the scene multiple times. Pro Tip: When answering a multiple choice question with a definite answer, carefully read all the possible choices before making your selection. Pro Tip: In your apartment, checking the window does not cost additional time. Pro Tip: If you have somewhere to be at a specific time, it might behoove you to head there 2 or 3 hours early. Though I do have some issues with the game, they are mostly trivial. For instance, on the fast-travel map, the text heading for the fortune teller uses a controversial word. Manually traversing the map feels a little awkward. When I first started Dokyusei, I didn't know what I was in for. I'm glad I stuck with it. Over the course of the game, my impression went from "this is a game I should be ashamed to be playing" to "this is one of the best games I've ever played, and I don't care who knows I played it."

Dokyusei is a slice of life dating sim. It holds the honor of being one of the first; the amount of heart it has is quite staggering, although some of the more raunchy humor might put some people off. It's a coming of age story, each of the girls routes hold different aspects of these lessons; and notably a lot of the routes are tied together, it's not just branches, they're intertwined, which is rather refreshing. It makes the city feel lived in. Just running into the various characters on their day to day tasks even outside of the events tells you a lot about them. It's difficult to really go into much without spoiling, but I will recommend something I don't typically talk much about, I heavily recommend the 18+ patch, as this being a coming of age story, romance and sex have quite a bit of a hold on the narrative and growth of it's lead. Without the 18+ patch a lot of dialogue gets toned down and even the heavier themes not even relating to sex get severely toned down and cleaned up. I know why they split this into a clean version and a patched version, but quite honestly the writing is significantly worse in the "clean" version. If you want to see where the dating sim genre started to blossom, and have a lovable cast and a good time, then Dokyusei is for you, there's even an easier mode for folks who don't want to remember event timings, although this can lead to the occasional erroneous result here and there.

First of all, if you're playing this type of game you should know there's an uncensor patch you need to apply before starting. That takes care of all the "censored" complaints you may see in any other review. Second of all, know that this is a high quality game with a fantastic English translation - it's not like the hordes of cheap hentai machine translated games that flood Steam these days. Now then, Dokyusei is a remake of a classic and beloved 90s PC-98 Japanese Dating Sim by esteemed developer ELF. If you're familiar with their other games or the genre, you know what you're getting into. If you're not familiar, then be advised these classic dating sims do not hold your hand. They can be cryptic, open ended, full of red herrings, and really force you to get into that pen and paper "I must write down everything" mentality. They aren't like modern streamlined visual novels or dating sims. Thankfully, this remake offers an "easy/casual" mode for modern audiences just looking to enjoy the story and characters - this mode is what the review is based on. This mode basically has a calendar showing when and where each event "flag" with a girl is and you can even select a flag to jump directly to the desired event so there's no need to experiment and write down when and where each girl will appear in what part of town. But even then you still have to watch out for information in dialogue as pre-arranged times and locations for dates. There's also a bit of resource management where you need to do various tasks to acquire money that can be used at certain points to buy things and impress the girls, but it's pretty simple to be honest. These little bits of gameplay keep it interactive and enjoyable. As for the story, it's fairly straightforward. You play a senior highschool student who wants to make the most of his summer break and highschool life. How you ask? By getting a girlfriend of course. The narrative is structured around meeting various girls around town, getting to know them, and bonding with them. By the end of summer, if you've played your cards correctly, you can choose to confess to one and get a girlfriend! The cast of girls are all varied ranging from kouhais to the "ideal highschool sweetheart" to older women. They're somewhat based on common archetypes, but I found most of them actually decently well written and multifaceted, which can be more than said for some VNs. Romance aside, the writing is fun, energetic, perverted, and memorable mostly because the main character has a strong and defined personality. He really bounces well off the girls whether you play him as a more sensitive guy or full on pervert. There has been some censorship from the (first) original release toning down some of the rauchiness for mordern sensibilities, but the overall spirit of the game is intact. I found myself laughing and being fully invested in the characters and plot. Personally I found the graphics excellent. The devs have managed to bring the style and spirit of the old drawings into a more modern anime look. I think if you didn't grow up with the original you'll have no issues with the art, but even if you did it's still very good. In terms of audio, the soundtrack is serviceable and the voice acting is top notch. Of course I don't speak native Japanese, but I didn't find anything jarring with any of the VAs except maybe Reiko, but that was admittedly more of a weird mental disconnect for me seeing a 25 year old act like a housewife in her 40s. Overall, I recognized that the voice acting really added to the experience. Anyways, if you're already looking at this game and reading this review, you clearly have an interest in the genre. It's pretty rare to get such a high quality remake of an old VN/dating sim so I'd support the devs on that alone. And hey, you might even end getting a new waifu in the process. 9/10 - would replay again when my dad isn't watching.

Let's get one thing of out the way first, while the 18+ patch unlocks sex and nudity, this is not a nukige game but an eroge. I've seen several dumbass reviews here mentioning that the sex was non-existent with fade to black. Except with an exception of a few scenes with the more grown up heroines, the sex scene in this game is handled very well and respectful towards the females. It beautifully showcased the MC's search for love, companionship, sex, discovery, consent, and every intermingling aspects of his young life. So if you're expecting an over the top sex scenes with a lot of interactions and creampies, this isn't it. The original Dokyusei was the godfather of dating simulation game when it was first released in 1992 that paved the way to future dating games like Tokimeki Memorial. This remake was the first global release of the game with new arts (from the original artist) and modern QOL improvements. I have to admit that I never had the fortune of playing the original game, but the main consensus was that this game's remake aged like a fine wine. And I couldn't agree more. This is absolutely one of the best game in this genre I've played in a long while. Each of the characters are very well written with their own quirks and personalities, as well as their schedule and story. The premise of the game is simple, you're the MC on your last summer break before graduation and it's up to you to make one of the 14 main heroines of the game your girlfriend by the end of summer. Each of these 14 ladies have their own storyline as well as their own endings (routes), and the introduction of Easy Mode (which was not present in the original game) made untangling their storylines a breeze. Now let's get to meat of the game, this is first and foremost an adult Dating Game, so an 18+ patch is required to significantly improve the game and elevate the story. Playing this game without the 18+ patch honestly felt like a disservice to how well written the entire stories are. Not only having the patch unlocks nudity and sex, but it also made the MC feels a lot more human and relatable. Yes, he uses a lot of crude and adult jokes (being an 18 years old guy after all), but that make the moments of his chivalry and understanding (as well as his character's growth by the end of the game) really shines and charming. This is probably the best written MC I've played with in a long while for this genre (with 18+ patch). Not to mention it's amazing how self-aware this game was as some of the MC inner dialogues will break the 4th wall when you're trying to do something he disagrees with. The 14 heroines covers all the woman archetypes for a dating sim, so you'll definitely find one of you'll vibe with. From gilded bird princess, a childhood friend, your kohai, all the way to the bombshell school's doctor that's really out of your league. All these heroines are very well written and each of their personality really shines that you can't help but play the game till you unlock all 14 different endings. I can't tell how many times I've laughed from the MC response or cried with the story as you progress. It was that good. Honestly, I am grateful to have a chance to play this game and I am grateful that they decided to remake it. This is one of the best adult dating sim I ever get my hands on and I can absolutely see why it was the one that started the foundation for future titles of the genre. I don't know if the studios and the publishers are reading the review, but dear Elf and Shiravune, please go ahead and remake Dokyusei 2 as well as future sequels of this series if you're planning to do so. We'll be waiting with a bated breath, because you have successfully made a lot of new fans with this release. Masterpiece.
