Overall, I think Disgaea 7 represents an improvement in the series and makes a good entry point for people new to the franchise. It's good, colorful fun with an engaging gameplay loop, decent writing, and enough material to fill out 100+ hours of playtime. I definitely enjoyed Disgaea 7 and would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed previous Disgaea games or has an interest in the series. I bought it at full price near release and I don't regret the purchase at all. However, at the time of this writing I just abandoned a third playthrough of the game with the realization that I'll probably never pick this game back up. This is pretty different from other games in the franchise that I've played numerous times and will play many more times -- including Disgaea 6. Disgaea 7 just has too many mobile-game design elements for me to really enjoy grinding up a decent team of characters. The Disgaea franchise really didn't need gacha, foil cards, RNG-based systems, and more useless collectibles; while cutting back on genre-defining mechanics like the Item World, innocents, and unit towers. The writing has improved since Disgaea 6, stepping away from the "just misguided and misunderstood" themes that started with Disgaea 5 and seemed to be turning the franchise into sappy Circle-of-Friends episodes in a Saturday morning cartoon. "Bad people do bad things" is a pretty basic and trope-filled method of writing, but at least it's easier to do well than the emotional complexity and nuance that D5 and D6 attempted. Disgaea 7 still shoots for some deeper writing with nuance and complexity but it doesn't plaster its attempts all over the place; so when the more emotional writing fails to land, the work as a whole doesn't suffer. Each Disgaea game comes with a special set of systems or mechanics that set it apart from other games in the series. Disgaea 7 introduces Hell Mode and Jumbification, both of which are fun to play with a few times and then you'll probably forget they're even there. Hell Mode suffers from the same flaw as most, if not all, ultimate-move systems: too good to use on trash mobs, not good enough to matter on bosses. Jumbification, on the other hand, is so good the designers made it a pain and a half to actually use except on certain key levels. This leaves Disgaea 7 in an odd place where it doesn't feel very unique as a Disgaea game.

While 5 is still the best entry (mechanically and QoL wise at least), this is a solid title. If you like Disgaea, you will like this. It's more of what you love. Better than 6, worse than 5.

i feel bad seeing mixed as the current rating. so here is my take. i think the game is a great step in the right direction compared to 6. six was frankly a mess, and i think they tried to change to much at once and what was changed wasnt really for the better. but 7 took some of the better things from 6 and improved upon them alot, the juice system is alot less annoying and easier to use well. and the auto battle system feels significantly less forced/needed and in a much better spot. i find myself enjoying using it alot more then in 6 at least. the story also feels alot better, i actually really liked the story and i personally think its one of the better ones from the series as a whole, better then both 6 and 5 at the very least imo. there is also an update that i think is releasing very soon in japan that adds alot more stuff to do and reworks a few things as well which should be coming westward at some point which im exited for. ultimately i think game play wise 5 is better but i still think 7 is worth it for what it does well

After finishing the main campaign and the release of patch 1.11, I can finally write this review. Do I recommend playing Disgaea 7? Absolutely. The series returns to most of its characteristics from previous entries, which were removed in Disgaea 6, making the game feel a lot like the rest of the games, with some significant changes to it, some good, some bad, but nothing I would consider a deal breaker. The 3D models are still something I would like they scrapped, but to be fair, they have vastly improved the motions since Disgaea 6. Now they actually feel like Disgaea moves, even if a bit on the slower side, as if they went back to the first game's speed for them. The new mechanics are fairly good, with jumbification being actually fun, and hell mode having a similar feeling to revenge mode from 5. I won't discuss the pvp aspect since I haven't tried it and probably won't until I need to 100% the game. As for the overall feel of the game? If you're a fan since the first entries, the game will lack flavor, I won't deny that. The story holds up pretty well and I would probably put it quite high in ranking, but the areas in which the game lacks are noticeable, like the combo system not being the same as it used to be, making it more convoluted than simply putting characters next to each other, or the tutorials not being a cutscene with a certain character making you go through the ropes while probably mocking you, but those are just some smaller complaints some might not have when playing. And while the amount of creatable characters is now the biggest its ever been, the weapon skills didn't fully make a comeback from the previous entry. They're now available, yes, but they have been reduced to 4 per weapon, which honestly felt quite lacking. Now, why did I wait until now to write a review? I streamed the whole game, and it was a *painful* experience because the game had a nasty bug that would make your cpu and gpu peak at random when characters used magic, or simply when the models would load. As of patch 1.11 the bug has been completely fixed and the game runs as smoothly as it can. I'm not gonna deny that I feel salty that it got fixed right after I finished the main campaing, but it is what it is. So, if you had your doubts about this game, I'd say buy it. The game's definitely worth the price now that its fully functional. TL;DR: Disgaea's back, baby! ...with some minor hiccups

Great improvement over 6 and a good game in general, but I think i just have to accept Disgaea isn't made for players like me anymore. I'm not a fan of the 3D shift, but its actually rather good in this game. The models are of reasonably good quality, the animations are honestly cool, and the stages look great. The music in this game is also absolutely incredible, they really did a fantastic job with it. The characters are a big improvement over the last two games, and the English dub this time around is honestly not bad at all. The story is interesting enough, and certainly better than the boring story that 5 and 6 had, but its still nowhere near as good as Disgaea 1. The problems for me is that there is little to zero focus on strategic or tactical gameplay, the entire formula of the game comes down to inflating your numbers so that you can one shot the enemies on the map or else they one shot you. To be fair, this has been what Disgaea has been about for many entries now, but I guess I just kept hoping they would change pace with each release. Alas, it seems this is the future of the franchise's gameplay. This will probably be the last Disgaea entry I buy, but all in all, great game to get if you're a fan of grinding, progressional strength building, and seeing big phat numbers when you hit things with a zany story and characters that don't take themselves seriously to go with it.
