As of writing this, I still haven't finished all of the content, and I probably won't be done for at least another 100 hours. It's a great game, and I do recommend it, but I would NOT recommend it as your first Disgaea game for multiple reasons. If you wanted to start with one of the earlier ones, start with Disgaea 1. Disgaea 1 has the best story in the series and the postgame is pretty straight forward without too many distractions. Talking about this game though: there are two aspects that I really dislike. Both are really only a problem for postgame. You don't NEED to bother with them if you just want to complete the main story. 1. Felonies They replaced the statistician resident/specialist/innocent completely. They don't exist. Instead, we have the felony system where you can VERY SLOWLY rack them up through item world visits via the bailiffs on subpoenas. Doesn't sound too different to statisticians, until you realize they're NON-TRANSFERABLE. Felonies earned on one character cannot be transferred in any way to any other characters. I would HIGHLY recommend giving some thought into what characters you really want to be using before grinding too much for these. (HINT: LEVEL UP A MAGIC KNIGHT and optionally: a Thief for the 99% steal chance) Luckily, you CAN get felonies on a tower of characters all at once by throwing in a tower of 9 characters into the Dark Court, but if you decide later on you want to use a different character, you're out of luck. Better get back to dozens of hours of more grinding solely for the exp bonus. Also, I'd highly recommend moving the bailiffs on to items you were planning on leveling anyways to help save time. NEVER farm felonies by just simply entering the subpoena's item world unless you also want to grab other specialists that may be on it. 2. Pirates Pirate farming suuuuuuuuucks. It's entirely RNG and can take FOREVER to get all the maps. Getting all of them is REQUIRED in order to unlock Land of Carnage, which is the only way to get tier 40 equips and to experience some of the game's postgame content. Just like felonies, I'd recommend trying to knock a lot of these out relatively early on while doing other things to hit two birds with one stone. Make sure you're waiting 1-3 turns on the floors you want pirates to spawn on. There's a wiki page out there that lists what floors each pirate type spawns on. You need 16 different pirate groups and they all have different floor requirements. Once you feel like you can handle LoC CoO4, (the enemies are level 5450) I'd recommend clearing floor 40 (or 60 if you need the Z Pirates still), leaving, save your game, and then just run through those floors exclusively hunting pirates and if you don't get the pirates you need, quit to menu and reload. This prevents you having to level up multiple items just to get to the minimum floor requirement.

I am a fan of nippon ichi games, but this one is definitely up there. The writing is peak fiction, and everything feels natural to the world, where characters have flaws and convictions, I would watch a full Disgaea 2 theatrical performance if possible, I love how they do the inner monologues with the screen putting the spotlight on the character by dimming the surroundings. The game play is standard Disgaea, but it was very interesting to get appearances from their other franchises, Phantom Brave among them, another great game with great storytelling. 11/10 if you like strategy games like fire emblem, then this is definitely worth the pickup.

Disgaea 2 is a great tactical RPG. The dialog is funny and the possibilities of infinite grinding provide a lot of content. Not only can you make your own characters but you recruit characters throughout the story. This port is a bit old and I had some issues with the PS5 Pro controller I was using mapping correctly to the game. It wasn't terrible to handle, but not as plug-and-play as modern games are. If you like tactical RPGs, this is a great game to play with fun pixel art.

Depending on who you ask, this can be one of the best examples of how disgaea should be developed. A rich story, likeable and developed characters that don't exist solely to become punchlines, and early pixel art that's flashy yet easy to grasp. Disgaea 2 improves from disgaea 1 in every single way. It's cast of characters are more likable and brought back from the previous game to play roles that add to the experience. Due to disgaea 2 PC's release it also includes characters from future entries and spinoffs which are portrayed beautifully here as later disgaea games develop a habit of misrepresenting characters. If you haven't played disgaea 2 and started getting into the disgaea series from a later entry chances are the cast will be portrayed completely differently in a worse light. Gameplay wise Disgaea 2 is what you would come to expect from the series with grinding out every aspect of the system and reaching level 9999. The real praise of the game compared to every other entry is the story, which I believe is the best out of the entire series because it takes itself seriously while providing jokes at the right time instead of constantly sprinkled everywhere. That being said, it's gameplay is still a relic of it's time so it hasn't adapted to later entrys. Disgaea 2 has the best story and characters, but as the time I write this disgaea 5 has better gameplay overall. I'd recommend getting disgaea 2 if you want to see the roots of the series and a serious narrative, or just enjoy the characters as much as I do. If this goes for a price drop, I advise you to purchase it. For me, it was worth the purchase. If story isn't your preference and you just want the best gameplay, then disgaea 5 is up your alley. Overall, i'm very glad that disgaea 2 is on steam and I will always recommend it to people who are interested completing the collection or want a more serious take on disgaea 1. If you want to buy disgaea 6 or 7, i'd suggest trying this first with it's lower price being a lot more accessible and depending on who you ask, works better with the pixel art then the 3D models ever could. Highly recommend people reading this review give it a chance and play for yourself. If you like disgaea, you should find no problems with the game and enjoy it!

Yes, the sprites in the screenshots are blurry. You have to disable the 'character filter' through the game's menu, or it will look like trash. You can thank me later. As for the game itself, it is the mighty Disgaea 2 in its final form.
