First of all, the game works perfectly on windows 11 once you apply some simple corrections that are easily found on the internet. About the game itself, it is clearly something that scratches your HOMM itch, with the following major twist : You do not stack units in your army, instead you rather recruit single units (in the limit of 3 to 5) that accompany your hero and level with him. At the beginning they are extremely weak but quickly ramp up as you bash creeps on the map. Whether it is recommandable on not is very situational. It has a lot of irritating cons : - The leveling system of units is frustrating, as all units start back at each new campaign, this makes each new map a bit tedious as your hero has to babysit them during the first encounters. - Another corollary is that the cities are extremely difficult to defend, since you can only use your poor lvl 0 units to defend them, and the computer LOVES to build medium strength party just to sneak behind your lines and steal everything he can. - Your main town on the other hand, can not be taken, as it is defended by an unit with somewhat unlimited power. Eventually, you just get bored with defending minor cities and just bulldoze through ennemy lines with your main hero. - Combat is extremely limited, your units stay in line and attack in turn based fashion. The only tactical option is who you choose to attack (with even stronger limitations as non distant attacks can only touch adjacent units). - The end of a map is tedious too : at some point your party becomes unbeatable, and you just have to kill everything, quite slowly since attacking anything consumes half of your move points. - But you DO have to kill everything for XP, or else your main hero (which carries you) will not have be up to the task for the main mission. - By the way, the turn of the computer is fairly long, even on modern computers, with a typical 20-30 sec. So there are a lot of negatives. Why recommend then ? Well, art and animations, are excellent, music is enjoyable, and most importantly the "one more turn" syndrome is unbelievably strong in this one. Maybe this is due to the globally frustrating feel of the game, but you always have something that you absolutely want to do on the next turn, so gamers that are used to old school games, with their various clunky features, might find happiness here.

Where remake? We get shit remakes for nearly any imaginable game, but this gem seems completely forgotten (except for the newest Disciples, which is a stinking pile of rubbish).

If it's stuttering/lagging on Windows 11, enable Direct3D in config editor (main game folder). Probably best not to choose the largest resolution since it zooms everything out like crazy - I went with the middle one + stretch to fit. Works fine - probably put 300 hours into the disk version back in the day.

WARNING Some players may encounter difficulties with running the game nowadays but it's not a big issue. Just refer to the discussions tab and you'll find any solution you need. Basically it's a 3 minutes problem at best. I strongly recommend you to use "Disciples I & II OpenGL Wrapper" because it solves the most technical problems. REVIEW This game is legendary and has a lot of potential even in 2024. I spent dozens of hours in D2 twenty years ago and despite the fact I really loved it I couldn't fully understand how great it was because of my age. Now, being an adult with no eager to get into action IMMEDIATELY I can just read and explore every detail of the game and discover new depths. And the depths are hard to escape from. The game has tons of content for hundreds of hours. There are four sagas of each race divided to two campaigns: The Dark Prophecy (7 missions) and The Guardians of the Lights (3 missions). The GOTL missions are harder thus requires already developed heroes with equipped items which are supposed to be imported from the DP campaign. The game offers you to export your characters in the end of the DP saga. By the way, if you completed the DP campaign as the Empire for example don't rush to start the GOTL campaign for the Empire. It's a little bit tricky story-wise. Don't get upset if you did it's not a mistake but following the plot can definitely improve your experience. I found a recommended order in the guides tab which I fully agree with so take it into account: [*]The Empire (The Dark Prophecy, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Legions of the Damned (The Dark Prophecy, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Undead Hordes (The Dark Prophecy, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Mountain Clans (The Dark Prophecy, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Legions of the Damned (The Guardians of the Lights, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Undead Hordes (The Guardians of the Lights, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Mountain Clans (The Guardians of the Lights, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Empire (The Guardians of the Lights, Disciples II: Gallean's Return) [*]The Elven Alliance (Disciples II: Rise of the Elves) In addition, it's worth to mention you should play both The DP and The GOTL campaigns in The Disciples II: Gallean's Return and use The Disciples II: Rise of the Elves only for the Elven campaign due to some bugs and incompatibilities. Aside from sagas the game has custom quests which impacts the lore with ability to extend your play hours to infinity. For those who had flown to the sun there are a lot of community made quests and even an editor for making quests. As I said it has four sagas with own storylines but they are interconnected. The lore has anchor events which races' stories are built around and you can experience the plot from every angle. Moreover, as you successfully carry forward through a campaign the other three stories has different outcomes because of your actions. Isn't it gorgeous? The arts and animations are spectacular. Music lives rent free in your head. The gameplay is absolutely unique. Spell system forces you to think strategically. Fight system has endless tactics potential. I encourage you to play on the highest difficulty to intensify your feelings because this review applies only to the highest difficulty. Despite several challenges it is still much easier than Disciples: Sacred Lands. 10/10 don't hesitate to touch the legendary game.
