the game is fun but the story is short. clocking in at 5.2 hours i beat it on normal first attempt without any struggles. a classic example of steam needing more than a yes/no as this game falls in between recommendations. i got this on sale for like 10$ and i would say 5 hours of entertainment is pretty good for $10. it costs more to pay for a movie theater experience to get half the time. if they build on this game expanding mechanics and diversity i could see it really being something but as is you finish quickly and while you could continue to play there is no gain it would be a 'how long can i go' kind of thing and honestly if you got to the end of the story you likely are so self sufficient you could never end. there in partly lies the problem of difficulty, resources are abundant and if you get any amount of a decent stockpile going you cant lose. further story is needed that builds upon established characters and the underwater and sky parts of lighthouse need to be expanded upon in utility/functionality. there is a diamond in the rough aspect to this game i really do hope they polish it out and push the limit of what this game can do.

tl;dr : if you like the boat management part of Spiritfarer, you should like that game. Look in hard difficulty for even a little challenge. Diluvian Winds is a nice little game, with a great setup and some nice graphics and audio. It is however a bit lacking as far as gameplay go. What's in place is good, quite balanced and only starts to feel repetitive near the end of the story mode (around 5 hours long for me). The story mode in normal looks a lot more like an easy mode and lacks any kind of challenge. There are other gameplay types possible, and I can only hope they bring the best of the mechanics that were hidden up until now.

I was someone who couldn't get into resource management games like Factorio or worker placement games like fallout shelter, but I really am enjoying this game on normal difficulty. If either of the above describe you, I recommend picking up this game. The art style is the perfect mix of cute, thematic, warm, and beautiful. Game play-wise, it has a really tight 4 part gameplay loop. The morning which sometimes has you choosing new workers, the day of figuring out how best you want to assign your workers to fullfil their requests, make the resources you need, and improve the efficiency how you want is always a fun choice. The tutorial of the story mode felt really well paced to me. Not a slog, and I unlocked new mechanics at a steady and appropriate rate where I never felt left behind. Some unlocks, like the oil production, were somewhat confusing at first, but I had enough time to play around with it and learn before unlocking anything new. The weather events feel less punishing than the biters of Factorio, which is a welcome change for me. They give the game the grit it needs to have stakes for your decisions, but not so much that you feel like you need to devote 2 hours of time just to preventing the negative effects. I don't write reviews, so take it that this is a good pickup!

I am refunding this game, so why am I giving it a positive review? It just wasn't the game for me. It's adorable and clearly well made, it has a really cool aesthetic to it. But it's just not what I thought it was. I had an article on my phone say that this was like a city builder. And with it's art style I thought that was really cool. In actuality, this is more of a resource management game... I am terrible at resource management. I'm the type of person who always has a full inventory, who can't be bothered to organise chests, who has too much cheese and not enough bread in her fridge right now. (Yes, really, I'll probably give the extra cheese to a friend, makes a fun random gift. It wouldn't be an issue if not for expiration dates.) As far as resource management games go, this one looks good, it's adorable and the developer clearly has put work into it. But... it's just not for me. I was told it was something else. I hope you that if you buy the game, you do so with knowing what type of game it is. That you're reading reviews for the game tells me you're already doing a better job of that than I did. Devs, if you ever release plushies of your characters, count me in. But the game is better played by someone who will enjoy that type of game. Much love, thank you for reading, I hope you enjoy the game. <3

I played this game throughout early access and have been playing the beta version of 1.0 for the last week. The devs have been super responsive to feedback and 1.0 is a major improvement on earlier versions of the game. On harder difficulties, this game is a tricky resource management and base-building puzzle. You are constantly repairing and fortifying against the cataclysmic weather, while trying to keep your travelers fed well enough to work. On easier difficulties, you get a more relaxing, cozy game where you build a comfortable hamlet and give travelers a haven in a harsh world. There are 3 game modes to play: Story In Story mode you develop the storm-battered hamlet at the base of the lighthouse into a thriving community. There are 9 chapters to play, each introducing you to new game mechanics. If you haven't played before (or have only played the prologue), I recommend starting with this game mode. Scoring In Scoring mode, all game mechanics are unlocked and you have 50 days to build a hamlet for the highest score. This is my favorite game mode - I recommend competing with a friend or a group on the game's discord to get the highest score on the same seed. Sandbox In Sandbox mode all the game mechanics are unlocked and it's up to you how you build your hamlet. All 3 game modes have basic difficulty setting: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Sandbox adds Diluvian difficulty (the hardest option), as well as the ability to customize the difficulty of most aspects of the game. The game is also just very pretty. The backgrounds are gorgeous and change with the weather and time of day. You can zoom in to look inside each room - they're all warm and cozy and full of interesting little details. The soundtrack is peaceful and sometimes it's nice to just listen to the sound of the rain.
