If you think this is a happy Digimon game with no consequences to your choices... you are wrong. A tip going into the game (and probably for life)... Be there for your friends, you never know what they might be going through.

Just got to the first boss fight and can say that so far I am really enjoying the game! I know there are a few recent mixed reviews so I'd like to give my thoughts on the game . . game-play: I believe if you understand that the game is largely focused on the visual novel genre you wont be disappointed. The story is good, the point and click style exploration feels very seamless, and the tactics style battles are fun. The battles do offer lots of options for people who wants a faster experience. You can increase battle speed and turn off animations to make them go by quick. They also offer difficulty settings so you can really customize how they run to fit how you want to play yourself. I like finding hidden battles and seeing what digimon are hanging around the area, trying to collect them is challenging but will be fun visual novel aspect: On the visual novel aspect itself I think it is a great addition to the genre, the art is beautiful and I really like all the characters already, even ones I didn't think I would like. They add enough things to do that make the story feel immersive and fun, I don't regret getting this game at all. If you are looking for something like Pokemon or that kind of game then I would probably not completely suggest this Digimon game over Cyber Sleuth, but if you enjoy good story telling and tactic style fights you will enjoy this one I hope this helps anyone unsure if the game is for them or not! This game goes on sale very frequently so I suggest waiting for a sale if you want to pick it up

Digimon Survive is a VISUAL NOVEL. Keep that in mind when you decide to buy and play it. Otherwise when you write a bad review on it complaining about its gameplay style you'll just sound like someone who are coming into a bakery and complaining that they're selling bread. However, for a VN it's very interactive. Minus the turn-based battles, I'd say the gameplay reminds me of DanganRonpa. It's also not as text-heavy because it doesn't have narration, only dialogues. Now, something that might not please everyone but is also very, very common in VN's gameplays: there are multiple endings and in order to unlock what is called the True Route that will guide you to the True Ending, you must finish the game once and get one of the "normal" endings. The endings, as well as the way your Agumon evolves, will be chosen according to your highest attribute out of three: Moral, Wrathfulness and Harmony. Also, as in many VNs, each ending has a different vibe, so you could divide them between Good, Neutral and Bad endings (I'm not telling which is which tho). So, yeah, the true ending of the game is hidden behind New Game+. Now that we're done with this, let's talk about the game itself. Your main character, Takuma, and a bunch of other kids need to survive in this weird, wild world where there are monsters, while trying to solve its mystery and to find a way to go back home. The game's story and characters are all new, but if you're familiar with the original Digimon Adventure anime you might notice some shoutouts to its story. Digimon Survive can get quite dark at times. And while the exploration of death as a theme is not new for the Digimon franchise, I'd say this game went deeper in it than any of the anime series and the other Digimon games I've played. I won't get into too much detail to not spoil anyone about the story. The gameplay. Things I liked (and consider pros): - Turn-based battles where you can use from 1 to 6 (and in rarer cases 8) mons at once. - The system to "catch" mons is similar to the one in Persona 2 (or Persona 5) where you need to talk to them, answer their questions and them ask them to join you. I find this fun, but admitedly it can be frustrating at times. - Interacting with characters to get higher affinity with them (which influences in battles). - Multiple endings. I love having different versions of how a story can go depending on the player's decisions. - Atmosphere. As I said it can get quite dark. Things get really tense sometimes. I appreciate that. - There are also light-hearted, cute and fun moments as well, and I love those too. - The way the game introduces the monsters not as "digimon" but as "kemonogami" and has a very different worldbuilding than what I'm used to with the franchise is very interesting. Things I didn't like (and consider cons): - Only 117 playable mons? In a franchise that has over 1000 different creatures? C'mon Bandai, you made we wait so much for this game, you could have done better than this. Many of my favorite mons are not in this game and that makes me sad. - The evolution system is quite meh. Other than the kids' mons, who are going to evolve according to how the story goes, you can evolve your "free" mons to any available form as long as you have the one item that is necessary for evolutions. The level they are doesn't matter. I guess this works well considering the rest of the gameplay but I've played Digimon games with cooler evolution systems. - Each mon having only one attack move besides the physical attack is very lame. You can add attacks with equipments but they will be in place of equipments you could use to make your mons stronger or more resistent instead. Right now I've reached all the common endings and am on Chapter 10 of the True Route. If I find necessary I might edit this review after I'm done with it. But one thing I know I won't change my mind about: this game is good and worth playing! If you like Digimon and visual novels, go for it!

I haven't beaten this yet but it made me cry. It's pretty emotional to me, come into this one with an open mind and go in blind. The story, rather bleak and dark.. makes up with the beautiful music that somehow lets you know there's hope. I'll update when I finish.
