DMC4 is a bit of a mixed bag in the whole series. It improves many aspects of the 3rd installment but is also lacking in some parts due to it having the same budget as DMC3. The special edtition, unfortunately, instead of fixing game's original state, feels like it took a "quantity over quality" approach. First I'd like to address some technical problems, the game doesn't support Steam Overlay, so you can't look up your achievements without alt-tabbing and can't see your playtime on the current session. Other people also complain about the game crashing or needing player to edit the files in order to run at all. There's also one thing every Capcom game seems to have - performance drops as you progress through the game. Namely loading screens getting longer. Storywise, many people consider it a step-down from DMC3, saying that, for example, Nero's and Kyrie's lines are written poorly and pointing out inconsistencies like Dante being seemingly unmoved by the amount of lives claimed by the demonic invasion of Fortuna , despite the events of previous titles. I personally find most of the cast and cutscenes they're present in, enjoyable, maybe even the best in the series. Music is good, some tracks like "Shall Never Surrender" and "The Time has Come" I'd put among the best of what this franchise has to offer. There's a lot I want to say about gameplay. It's not terrible but there're just so many oversights which hold it back from being as great as 3 and 5. Before I start my critique on it, I want to highlight some things that the game does good. [*] I really liked Credo's bossfight. His fight is how Nelo Angelo should feel in DMC1. Has generous attacks and actual vulnerability time instead of constantly guarding and teleporting but still beats you up several times in the beginning and as you defeat him in subsequent playthroughs and then Bloody Palace, you learn his attack patterns, when you can and can't attack, as well as some secret strats you can use against him. Something that his DMC1 counterpart did not manage to do. [*] Nero, the main playable character, designwise, is genious. Since devs wante to expand on Dante's abilities, they needed an easier character to let potential new players have fun without overwhelming them with mechanics. I'll talk about specifics later. [*] This game introduced demon interactions. While most enemies in the roster are your average creatures from the underworld, some of them are artificial demons created by the Order , which causes those 2 demon factions to fight with each other, usually Assaults with Biancos and Altos. There are also Echidna Seeds trying to plant themselves in whichever uninfected demon is present in the area. Now for the bad parts, I'll try to not get too deep into details but there's also a lot of flaws I feel the need to address. DMC4 has the highest amount of playable characters of all DMC games, each with a unique gameplay but also flaws it has to deal with: [*] Nero - He's the main character, so of course he's the best to play as. He has one melee weapon with a lot of moves and timing-based mechanic, a gun and his devil bringer. He has good counters against most enemies and is generally fun to play. One thing I don't like is how his charged shot can be unreliable when dealing with Blitz's energy shield, especially since it's his only real counter for that. [*] Dante - The second main, playable character. His gameplay here (in my opinion) is trash compared to other entries. While he can equip 3 melee and ranged weapons at once and switch styles on the fly, his styles received huge nerfs and new weapons aren't nearly as good as they were in 3. His melee weapons cover much smaller range (especially Gilgamesh's ridiculously small), hitstun he inflicts on enemies is pathetic, his only air options are either guns or the Rebellion, Pandora has awfully long startup animations for most moves, Lucifer becomes irrelevant in DMD save for some specific uses (like countering Blitz's shield) and instead of getting new weapons, they gave him some dumb advanced mechanics like Distorted combos and Guard Flying, which were most probably just exploits discovered by the playerbase in the base version. Dante can be devastating, as proven by many skilled players on youtube but getting carpal tunnel from jump cancelled air combos just isn't as fun as fighting enemies on the ground with an actual ability to combo and hitstun them with a lot of different weapons. Also there's no loadout customization. You're stuck with his default weapon order the entire game. [*] Vergil - Vergil, on the other hand, received a major upgrade compared to DMC3, now having more freedom with summoned swords, faster combos and some new moves and mechanics based on Vergil's Downfall DLC for the reboot. One thing I hate about him is how air trick teleports him to enemies pierced with summoned swords instead of upwards. [*] Lady - She is similar to Vergil in that she has 3 weapons to choose from but instead of using melee options, she has 3 guns and style similar to gunslinger instead of trickster. Her moveset is very limited, having one, very slow combo, standard lock-on actions for melee, 2 gunslinger attacks for each weapon, as well as charged shots and a big explosion attack with i-frames instead of Devil Trigger. Lack of solid melee options makes her fights with some bosses a pain, namely Bael/Dagon and both forms of Sanctus . [*] Trish - She has 2 melee and 2 ranged weapons integrated into her moveset without style/weapon swtiching (not counting Round Trip). I adore the idea to have one, "cooler" weapon take up a separate button, but while it hurts me to say this, Trish might be the worst playable character in this game. This is due to her lack of any good ranged options, which are a necesity to counter enemies like Blitz and Mephisto/Faust. It's a shame, because I found her gameplay to be very fun otherwise. The amount of characters adds a lot to replayability but everyone except Nero and Vergil seem to be missing something, especially Lady and Trish lacking basic abilities to deal with everything in a way that is satisfying and not heavily resource-dependent. There's the whole "Dante doing Nero's campaign but backwards" thing in the middle of campaign and while it made the game feel more repetetive, I don't think it's that bad with what else there is wrong. The main gripe I have with DMC4 is how you can't cancel out of many actions like something as stupid as the first few frames of Dante's style change animation. Every enemy seems to have an attack that's even dumber than what I've had issues with in DMC3 and 5. Namely Biancos and Frosts attacking too fast, little to no hitstun on most enemies and Fausts phasing through walls, flying, having a ton of health and ridiculous attack range. The Savior bossfight is a complete disappointment. This is the last mission for Dante with him facing off against the main villain and his mocap-controlled statue-mech and you make it into a DMC2-type boss? This isn't even the worst part, Trish and Vergil don't have enough range to shoot him half of the time, so have fun waiting for the boss to ascend above you on a singular, specific platform and allow you to deal melee damage to him for 5 seconds. Sound design isn't the greatest in my opinion. Hitting most enemies with a sword sounds like you're hitting them with something blunt like a baseball bat and Dante's steamy-mechanical Gilgamesh sounding like Vergil's light-infused Beowulf doesn't make sense to me. Overall, DMC4 has a lot of flaws but I can't deny it was still a fun experience to play through. While not as good as 3 or 5, it still is enjoyable and holds value. Wouldn't recommend for newer players though.

A game that is incomplete, and yet still a great game in its own right. Play it with an open mind. This is the beginning of Nero. DMC4 ran, so DMC5 could fly.

A very amazing game. Could have been on par with dmc 3 but reusing the few same bosses 3 times, some part of the game where you basically backtrack here and there was annoying, the second half of the game gets kinda worse and The story was slightly less compelling than dmc 3. The combat and enemies were definitely much much better in dmc 4, overall a great game worth giving it a shot and espiecally playing as vergil is extremely fun, having the opportunity to play as him alone makes this game worth buying.
