As a long-time player of Depth, figured it's high time I gave my two cents about the game. (Let's be real. What were you expecting from a guy with a Fijian shark god both as the username and as the Steam avatar?) An asymmetrical multiplayer game of sharks with a third-person view against divers with a first-person view. Regardless of which side you're playing as, effective playing requires both getting familiar with different sharks and weapons used by the divers and some strategy and adapting to different situations. ''Blood and Gold'': The main game mode. Without exception the game mode most people will be playing. The goal of a team of four divers is to escort an undersea robot STEVE as he moves through the map opening treasure chests, while collecting treasures scattered in the area. More treasure allows purchasing more expensive and powerful weapons. However, the majority of the treasure items lie in open areas, making gathering them extremely risky to all but the most experienced divers. Meanwhile a duo of sharks hunts and eats the divers trying to stop them. Sharks gain evolution points every time they kill a diver. They can also attack STEVE to slow him down and sometimes even destroy him. Granted, the latter scenario is rare, considering STEVE can both take several hits and be repaired by the divers. Diver Victory: STEVE escorted to the finish, or sharks run out of lives. Shark Victory: Divers run out of lives, or STEVE is destroyed regardless of the number of remaining diver lives. ''Megalodon Hunt'': Five divers against the Megalodon. Divers unlock more powerful weapons the more treasure they collect. Whoever kills the Megalodon gets to play as him until he gets killed again. A quick game in which first to 10 000 points and a single kill as the Megalodon wins. ''Hide and Seek'': Shark seeking for divers armed only with Bang Sticks. Who will kill who? ''Haywire'': Originally limited to temporary events, this one features more standard FPS combat with two teams of six divers fighting against each other over the control of STEVE as he opens treasure chests. Every once in a while a player on either team will get a chance to play as the shark to wreak death on the opposing team. Whichever team's the first to claim more treasure chests wins. STATE OF THE GAME It was announced early in 2022 that Depth would receive no more major content updates or balance changes. Predictably, this announcement meant that the majority of the active players have now moved on to stormier waters, so to speak. Well, Digital Confectioners is a small indie team, so if they wanted to make other projects as well, working on a single game forever was never an option. Having said that, I must say that Depth has certainly come a long way over it's 7+ year active run. Several new sharks and new weapons for the divers. Currently, the game is set to repeatedly run an event dubbed ''Remix''. The unlockable chests now contain skins from literally all the seasonal and other events Depth has ever had: Chinese New Year, Halloween, Christmas, themed events and more. The event is set to repeat automatically every 30 days. Furthermore, every game mode Depth has ever had can now be played, including Haywire that was originally limited to temporary events. Although, a progress seeking player may not have that many reasons to play Depth unless he's a skin collector. (Though Depth certainly has no shortage of memorable skins for divers and sharks alike). VERDICT Simple and fast-paced underwater action. Easy to learn, more challenging to master. Though the minimal current number of active players and said players likely being veterans means any newcomers will most likely find themselves outmatched. Therefore, I'd probably recommend waiting for a sale and purchasing the game for yourself and some Steam friends. Particularly if you want to play game modes other than Blood and Gold. A must-have game for fans of sharks and underwater combat. Or both.

I played the game when it was popular and I'm happy to be playing it now. It's a game worth coming back to after ten years. I'm happy to report that the bots in this game are competently designed and will provide endless hours of entertainment, no matter how forgotten this game becomes.
