Among the many Phasmophobia clones, Demonologist stands out by carving out its own identity, specifically, as a scarier alternative. Compared to Phasmophobia, this game boasts better graphics and excels in creating an eerie atmosphere. One of its biggest strengths is its haunted house environments, filled with small details and Easter eggs that make each map feel immersive. Where Phasmophobia’s maps often resemble ordinary locations with the lights off, Demonologist feels like stepping into a full-fledged horror movie, complete with randomized jump scares that keep each playthrough feeling fresh. One of the game’s best features is its exorcism mechanic, which adds a more satisfying goal beyond simply identifying the ghost. Since exorcisms can only be performed after correctly guessing the ghost type, often when your sanity is already low, you have to decide whether to risk it for the extra reward or play it safe and leave. These exorcisms vary by map, making it fun to learn how to complete each one. However, Demonologist does have areas that need improvement. A major issue is persistent problems with microphone recognition. While this didn’t affect me too often, there were times when the game inexplicably stopped recognizing my mic. In a social, party-style game like this, proximity chat is crucial for immersion. Losing the ability to talk to the ghost, an important mechanic for gathering evidence, can be particularly frustrating. The hunting mechanics also have some flaws. Hiding from ghosts can feel inconsistent, as they sometimes spot you entering a hiding place when it seems like they shouldn’t. Additionally, surviving a hunt often boils down to simply using a protective item or waiting in a hiding spot for 30 seconds, which can get tedious. Worse, ghosts sometimes chain hunt, repeatedly locking the exit door and forcing you to scramble back to your hiding spot over and over. Another point of criticism is the game's approach to ghost behavior. In Phasmophobia, experienced players can identify ghosts based on unique traits and behaviors beyond just gathering evidence. While Demonologist does give ghosts some distinctive behaviors, they aren’t designed in a way that makes them reliably identifiable without traditional evidence. This limits progression, after playing for long enough and learning all the jump scares, the game starts to feel like a waiting game until new content drops. That said, the developers have done a solid job of adding updates so far. While Demonologist can be played solo, it truly shines when experienced with friends. Final Verdict: 7/10

Coming from Phasmo, a friend told me about this game and since it was on sale, I figured I would give it try. This game is a lot of fun and has a good bit of jump scares through out the hunt. More than Phasmo. I like the fact that you have actual steps in the game while you are performing your investigations. You must first ID the ghost before you can proceed to the the side objectives and before you exercise the ghost, you must complete the side objectives. But the exercising of the ghost is what I found to be a lot of fun. The game gives you various different things to do and figure out, just like a puzzle in order to successfully exercise the entity and get it done before the ghost calls you his snuggle buddy. In my honest opinion, I have had more fun in this game than I did playing Phasmo. Phasmo is still a great game for what it is, but I feel this game offers you more to do to completely finish everything. I went back and played a session of Phasmo after playing this while and I had fun, but all I wanted to do was go back to Demonologist. If you enjoyed playing Phasmo, I think you would really enjoy playing this one.

Great fun with friends, legitimately terrifying solo. sound design is very good. If you are using headphones the whispering and growling like sounds really sets off a primal fear response. I could play other games like this aka phasmo on my own, but this one... I noped right out of it first try and that's fine with me. Will play with friends and keep my sanity.

This game is fantastic! one of my favorites in my library. If you are someone who is interested in this game because you love or loved phasmophobia I strongly urge you to pick up this game. I personally think this game is better in almost every way. minus a few things, but this game has only been out a year so i think with more time it could just all around be the better game. I have over 300 hours in phas and almost 80 in this game at the time of writing this. I think it is important to lay out what i think this game does better. Things demo does better: 1) The maps are not only designed better, they are also scarier than phas in my opinion. They also come out much more frequently than Phas maps, instead of just making U.I. changes over and over again. 2) The side objectives CLEAR Phas's they are much more detailed and engaging, and rarely end up in someone dying for absolutely no good reason. reading notes about the games lore and actually accomplishing things is just way more immersive in my opinion. 3) You can actually exorcise the ghost. I always thought it was strange in phas how you just figure out what type of ghost it is then you leave. again it makes Phas feel less complete and less engaging. 4) You can customize your character, change your hub world, and have a pet. with the hub world interacting with the story at times. nothing crazy but i think just adds another layer to the game that Phas just does not have. 5) that brings me to my next point which i feel is more subjective, but I love the fact that this game has a overarching story and all the maps have lore behind them it adds depth to the things going on around you. 6)ghost events. This is a big one that demo just sweeps with. i have played a decent amount of both games, and most ghost events play out the exact same way in phas where as here im still seeing the ghost do things ive never seen before on the regular. it really keeps you on your toes. I believe this to be a unity restriction on phas's part i may be wrong but this game is just way scarier. I often am not scared by phas sometimes even downright falling asleep waiting for anything to happen. where as in demo I am on the regular in the middle of a mental breakdown this game can be terrifying at times. phas is more of a slow burn that just mildly creeps me out every once and a little while. Things Phas does better: 1) Having three tiers of equipment. I think which game has better equipment is down to personal preference, but i do find myself wishing demo had different tiers of equipment to unlock like phas. 2) The proximity chat is WAY better in Phas. Demo doesn't have a radio even so i think this game is best played in a discord call, because the ghost can always hear you no matter what unlike phas where you have to actually talk through game chat to be heard. 3) Activity meter this one is not only helpful on Phas but it add another layer of depth for whoever decides to be the truck (or in this game the tent) guy. Although you can look at different cameras in this game which is something i wish phas would do, but overall i still think the truck is more engaging in phas because of things like D.O.T.S and spirit orbs. In demo you are really just looking for ESG and Easel. altough that does mean you are inside the house more often being scared so I will let you decide if that is a positive or not. It is for me because I play these games to get scared and sometimes truck duty puts me to sleep. 4) Basketball. I don't mean to sound like I'm knocking Phas, Because i still like it, but I would be lying if i didn't say this game has more of my attention. Phas was my first PC game after I built my computer and this game would't even exist without it, but if you are on the fence about getting this game i say go for it. I really do not think you will be disappointed out of all my friends we all play phas and demo on a regular basis and 5 out of 6 enjoy this game more. I genuinely can not recommend this game enough, This is definitely the longest review i have ever written for anything. Thank you for coming to my ted talk and happy hunting!

Demonoligist: Full Review So Demonoligist can be seen as a "Phasmophobia Clone" to quite a lot of people, however there are some things that it improves on and adds to the experience. Things I wanted from Phasmophobia from the start. The investigations are extremely similar compared to Phasmophobia but it takes the whole "retro" look when it comes to some of your tools. What I love about Demonoligist compared to Phasmophobia: > Better jumpscares, although some ghost events are scripted it has better jumpscares overall. > Exorcism after investigation. This is the thing I really love about Demonologist, because as opposed to Phasmophobia you actually do something about the haunting. In Phas you just investigate and leave the people to deal with the ghost "Yeah bro your house is haunted, but at least you know what ghost is haunting it." Demonologist allows you to exorcise the ghost after you completed the investigation which adds another level of enjoyment. > Environments are more "spooky" which is amazing, in Phas its just some random persons house or cabin. > Tools are straight forward. You can read the tooltips on what each tool does but its easier to get used to compared to the large variety of tools Phas has. Some might see the large quantity of tools as a bonus, but I always found it annoying, running back and forth with each tool trying to find what the hell was needed. Demonologist has fewer tools allowing for a smoother experience and less back tracking. > Ghost noises and environmental interactions when it comes to haunting ramps up quite a lot in Demonologist, where as Phasmophobia has fewer interactions and more frequent haunts which doesn't build the same tension that Demonologist does. > One key interactions. The whole dragging to open doors annoyed me so much in Phas and could sometimes break during a ghost chase where with Demonologist its a simple E for interact which is such a relief. > Hidey spots. In Phasmophobia the closets or some of the rooms offer no "real" protection where with Demonologist the closets have saved me... Not so much my friend but thats a him problem. > Character customisation. I know it's very basic but just being able to customise my character is such a nice addition. What I don't like: > Low sprint. I get that you try to build tension and want to add a level of "spook" to the game, but I am not playing a morbidly obese man that can't sprint for more than 5 seconds without becoming exhausted. Phasmo has the same issue. > XP gain is a bit slow as well as money, but the higher the difficulty the greater the reward I suppose. It just becomes a problem when you need to do the same map 3 or 4 times before unlocking the next one. > I had a bug where the side objective wouldn't complete even though I interacted with all the crucifixes. This kind of forced me to finish the "hunt" sooner, losing out on extra xp. But now I'm nitpicking. Conclusion: Phasmophobia has had three years to build up to what it is now. Demonologist is still in its infancy, but the fact that it has features in which should have been in Phasmo years ago now speaks volume to the developers commitment. I look forward to the future of Demonologist and what it could bring to the table. This game has replaced Phasmo for me completely. So if you are wondering which one you should get, Demo or Phasmo, I would recommend Demo simply because it has features in it that improve on Phasmo so much. I know I haven't invested a lot of time in the game as of yet, but believe me when I say that this is just the beginning for me. EDIT: Okay so I thought my game was bugged as my "tools" kept vanishing in my hand. So not a bug... The Namaah steals tools. So I don't know whether the devs are trolling or whether they are masterminds. Really enjoying this game guys. Good job.
