This is a review purely from the perspective of being a fighting game player. Arena Fighters have a bad rep, and deservedly so, but I've always thought the sub-genre had some potential. Potential that a few games have tapped into to varying degrees of success but nothing has quite stuck the landing. Well I feel relatively confident in saying that this IS the game to stick the landing. The first Hinokami Chronicles was a solid foundation that needed a lot of polishing and this game has given it all that polishing (technical issues aside). Characters here all feel incredibly distinct from eachother, which should be expected but in this subgenre that can commonly be an issue. Neutral here feels a lot better than the first game, whiff punishing and spacing feels a lot more important and rewarding. Meter management of both your regular "special move" meter and super meter is incredibly important and new mechanics like the replacement combo or solo demons being able to juggle with boosts adds a nice layer of resource management and combo routing variety that the first game sorely lacked. The new demon duos also add a nice bit of variety to demon playstyles whilst also not completely invalidating the original solo versions of those characters. The change in controls for parrying and heavy attacks makes using them reactively much more reliable, heavies in particular benefit a lot. Guard break pressure is thus far much more common (which in a genre generally lacking directional mix is a good thing) and thus both players are constantly needing to make more decisions defensively. Aside from the core fighting mechanics which are far better than I expected them to be, the content on offer here is solid. The character roster is fairly large (minus the academy characters that are functionally just skins, but the roster is still big without them) and the game's story mode is a big improvement from CyberConnect2's previous outings. The bosses here are the best they've done (Gyutaro and Zohakuten stand out as particularly fun boss fights) and the bigger areas to explore and extra gimmicks like horde battles help shake things up. The "Path of a Demon Slayer" mode is somewhat disappointing though as it's just a series of CPU fights against the player character versions of bosses from the first game rather than being able to fight the actual bosses. If you already like arena fighters this is a no brainer. But if you're someone who is understandably hesistant of the genre, but can also see the potential it could have, I'd still recommend giving this game a shot because I legitimately believe this is the right direction for the genre and it stands as a solid fighting game experience in it's own right.

I got to play The Hinokami Chronicles 2 early by pre-purchasing it, and honestly, it was such a good call. From the second the game started, it felt like I was stepping right into the anime. The visuals are ridiculously gorgeous. Every fight, every special move, every tiny detail looks like it was lifted straight from the show, just fully playable. Combat feels smooth and responsive. It’s easy to pick up even if you’re not a pro at fighting games, but there’s enough depth to keep things interesting. Characters all feel unique, and the more time you spend learning their playstyles, the more rewarding it gets. I’ve already spent way too much time in Versus Mode and I’m still not tired of it. The story mode is emotional and really well done. The big moments land exactly how they should. I found myself getting emotional all over again during scenes I’ve already seen a dozen times in the anime. It hits. The only thing that dragged a little for me was the exploration in between the big fights. A lot of walking around, picking up glowing items, and not much else. It slows things down a bit, especially when you’re itching to get to the next boss. That said, the voice acting is amazing. The soundtrack is just as good as ever. It really pulls everything together and makes each battle feel intense and important. Whether you play in Japanese or English, the performances are solid. If you’re a fan of Demon Slayer, this game feels like a gift. If you’re just into fighting games or anime games in general, it still has a lot to offer. Getting early access through the pre-order made the experience even more exciting, and the game definitely lived up to the hype.

Not sure if it's just me, but I'm really enjoying it. I didn’t really notice any input lag. From what I’ve seen in the reviews, the multiplayer seems to have some serious lag issues, but outside of that, everything runs fine. I’d like to test the multiplayer input lag myself, but I can’t even get a match. The story follows the anime pretty closely, and even though I haven’t played the previous game, the combat was better than I expected. If it goes on sale, I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s watched "Demon Slayer."
