While Deflector has some very innovative ideas, I felt it does not provide longevity as well as other roguelike titles I have played. While I did enjoy the game, I think it's missing an element that compels the player to continue playing after beating the game. Despite being a style of game mostly associated with indie developers, the roguelite genre has seen quite a bit of saturation in the past few years. As a result, it can be rare to see a roguelite game with an entirely unique concept, but I'm extremely pleased to say Deflector is one such game. The core conceit is, as you might imagine, deflection. The game draws inspiration from the bullet hell genre, as enemies launch intricate, nonstop patterns of projectiles at you, but, in Deflector, you can turn their assault right back on them with a 'parry' style ability that will send projectiles flying back at enemies. This isn't mere damage avoidance, either; you can deal massive damage via deflecting bullets, and characters event have a "Deflect" stat that scales up the base damage of deflected bullets (as well as associated upgrades). Deflecting bullets is so rewarding that I often find myself dashing not out of, but INTO clouds of bullets to maximize the number of projectiles I can reflect back at enemies. It's a cool style of positional awareness that I haven't really seen other games take advantage of. The deflection mindset is further baked into all aspects of the game, including character design -- and Deflector might have some of the most interesting character classes in recent memory. The starting class, Eradicator, uses a boomerang and gets a movement speed boost after throwing, adding more depth to positional depth to the game. But the REALLY cool thing is that Eradicator can actually deflect his boomerang to send it back at enemies, deflecting bullets and proccing any "on-deflect" upgrades at the same time. Some character-specific perks also reward this action, such as an upgrade that causes an AoE explosion after deflecting the boomerang twice in a row. It's really cool design that builds on the core "deflect stuff" concept of the game really well, adding cohesion and depth to existing systems. Another class, Spark, doesn't even have a traditional attack -- instead, Spark automatically spawns orbs that can be deflected and then recalled, damaging enemies both ways. It's entirely unique but also totally inline with other mechanics in the game. And these are just two of the six classes in game! With a primary, deflect, active, and passive ability each, as well as a handful of character-specific perks, the classes add a lot of depth to gameplay. Roguelites tend to live or die on the quality of their upgrades, and I'm happy to say Deflector nails this, too. Aside from character-specific perks, there's a large pool of universal upgrades, ranging from lightning bolts, explosions, bone spikes, drones, and more to keep things interesting. Each perk is also assigned a random elemental effect modifier when you pick it up, and, since you'll want to take perks with matching elemental modifiers to maximize their effects, the same perk might fit into your build in different ways over different runs. It's a really smart way to add additional layers of randomization to keep things fresh. A constant stream of unlocks will give you new toys to play with pretty much each run, too. The gameplay systems are incredibly polished, and the visual design of the game is, too. Important information, like the number of dashes you have or the direction your character is facing, is displayed right beneath your character on screen. Also, all damage dealt is assigned a color based on the player stat that scales it (red, blue, or green for Attack, Deflect, and Health, respectively), meaning there is NEVER any mystery about how to grow your character during a run. The game will also guide you to remaining enemies or exits with subtle visual indicators, too, which is a level of polish not a lot of games capture. I personally have no issues reading enemy attacks, either; both melee attacks and projectile patterns feel clean and fair. Plus, the game looks GREAT: the aesthetic style is very cool, being part biopunk and part monster horror, and the soundtrack is full of metalcore bangers that wouldn't sound out of place on an After the Burial or Unearth album. Add in the typical roguelite goodness, like tasteful metaprogression, Slay-the-Spire-style pathing, and post-game challenges, and Deflector is an absolute winner. I play a LOT of roguelites (I have 100+ in my library currently), and Deflector is easily in the top 15% of that group, if not higher. This is an incredibly polished, well-made game absolutely brimming with unique and original ideas. If you're a roguelite fan, this is a must-play. If you're an action fan, I'd recommend you give it a go, too. Do yourself a favor and pick up Deflector!
