Imagine Hitman but during WW2. The elements of a stealth/assassin game is there - silent killing, assassinations, changing into other uniforms. Overall great game, if you want something different but close to the Hitman franchise, then get this, it's worth the price.

Bad but I like it. A classic example of Slavjank. Plays somewhat like the first few Hitman games (missions are variations on 'steal/sabotage this thing' and/or 'kill this guy'), set in WW2, which is a cool concept that drew me in, but several key features are poorly executed. The worst thing is the AI - in this kind of game, it's vital that NPC behaviour makes sense and also has some variety to it. But the NPCs in Death to Spies are unfortunately pretty primitive, and this detracts from enjoyment and immersion. Guards have no meaningful 'investigate' state, they are either in patrol mode or aggro mode, and all guards in an area instantly aggro when you're discovered, whereupon all they do is bumrush you while shooting and throwing grenades. Then you realise the only viable thing at that point is to camp behind cover and just headshot them as they rush you. No tactics beside nades, which they often fuck up and bounce back at themselves, which at least can be funny. But so many missions I completed after massacring guards in a corridor when my cover was blown and then doing objectives in a now empty area, which obviously kills the spy vibe. You can't interact with them in disguise and they do nothing besides walk their patrol routes. Also, all NPCs constantly stare right at you when you're visible to them, never looking anywhere else, which is uncanny and dumb. The mission set in a busy hotel is kind of creepy because of this. It's a shame because there was clearly passion here and the mission locations are properly varied, and the infiltration aspect (approaching the target, looking for a small window of opportunity amidst very tight security) is engaging and tense sometimes. The sequel is basically more of the same and the 2016 sort-of third game Alekhine's Gun I haven't played but it's reviewed poorly. Looking on Youtube there appears to be a Death to Spies 3 in slow development by Haggard Games, and I hope very much that it will finally fulfill this idea's potential. So I recommend this only to those who love the concept and can find fun in not-great gameplay as I did.

Clunky hitman set in ww2. A little tough to learn and work with but it follows the hitman formula in a ww2 setting despite a few bad levels I think this game was fun much better than the games that came after.

very very hesitant review. slavjank hitman. incredibly buggy, with most easy to walk around or easy to fix. the fun parts of the game are very fun but the levels are not as freeform as hitman levels and there is much less freedom and creativity in the carrying out of assassinations. disguise system is fun though. game is also one of the hardest games i've ever played.

It was the first video game I have played in my entire life and I have a lot of love and appreciation for it, one of my favorites without a doubt. Highly recommended. I would have liked, however, that there had been the possibility of purchasing the remastered version. I have it physically and I used to play the game (remastered) on an old computer. However, my current computer (mid-high range) does not have a disc reader so I cannot play that version and therefore, I would like to be able to buy it digitally this time.
