I'm not normally a big roguelike fan, but this one hooked me. It's a well-tuned combination of the roguelike mechanic (with a skill tree that grants permanent upgrades) and FPS gameplay. Pros: - The game slowly adds mechanics as you play, so despite the depth of what there is to do here, it is never overwhelming. - Progression feels natural and steady. It's usually not difficult to add a new skill from the skill tree every few runs, which keeps the game feeling fresh. - 4 different character classes also helps with replayability. At 15 hours of gameplay, I've really only focused on 1 of those classes, and have hardly touched the other 3. - The FPS combat itself is well-crafted. Movement feels fluid, and the combat is satisfying. The inclusion of "stages" is also a nice touch- the transition from one stage to the next gives you a minute to relax and prepare yourself mentally for the next round of combat. Cons: - There's some variation/randomness to the stages that you work your way through, but honestly a bit more variety in this would be nice. It doesn't take long before the level architecture starts to get kind of stale. - The soundtrack isn't bad, but it's also just kind of... there. I think the game would really benefit from a dynamic soundtrack that changes in response to your actions and the environment in the moment.

What is Deadlink? It's Hades... But the combat is DOOM (modern DOOM, not old-school)... With a cartoon-cyberpunk skin… And some Borderlands-style humor, let’s say Borderlands-Lite. That's It. What you get: You get four different characters to play (unlocked as you progress), each with 2 unique weapons, and 2 unique abilities, both on cooldown timers. You have grenades, dodge, and a double-jump. Play through four different areas, each with an average of maybe 7 or 8ish rooms. Pick various upgrades after a room. When you die, spend some of your 2 permanent currencies to upgrade your characters and improve your drops. Combat has a focus on killing “marked” targets. Each character has several ways to mark a target, then when you kill said target they drop shield-refills to help you stay alive. You also get a timed mode, and an endless-wave hoard mode. The Good: - Combat is VERY crisp and polished - Movement and shooting feel great - Room rewards and meta-progression are both addictive The Bad: - More repetitive than Hades, but not near as bad as some rogue-likes - Balance of rewards is not great. Many upgrades are downright useless, while others (of the same rarity tier) are OP. (Although this does create more excitement when you get the good stuff) - Humor falls flat most of the time - Could not care less about the story The Maybe: - The highest difficulty is quite hard! (there are 3 tiers) You need to get real lucky with your upgrades, and/or spend huge amounts of currencies, which can take hours to acquire. The middle difficulty is appropriate though, far from a guaranteed completion even on a fully upgraded character.

The FPS action is top-notch, the combat loop satisfying and the roguelike elements are all balanced to perfection. The game is let down a little by a lack of variety in locations and enemies and the writing is hardly anything to set the world on fire, but these are small issues that are easily overlooked because the core loop is just too much fun. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3319716028

Solid base of a game that quickly becomes repetitive due to limited content. Pros: + Solid movement and gunplay strongly inspired by the new Doom games + Worldbuilding is strong and makes you want to explore more than the game allows you to + Clean, crisp UI and exceptional game presentation overall + The game loop of fighting through connected arenas before a boss encounter is ok, but there are very few rooms and I started losing interest after about 10 hours + Good variety of skills to augment your guns, shell, and neural stats Cons: - Way too repetitive. Very few rooms for each 'biome' and you get to know them all very soon. Moreover, the order of the 'biomes' is not randomized and you'll get to see the first one over and over again - Extremely grindy. Grind is to be expected in a roguelite, but Deadlink goes a bit too far with it. 15 hours in and only unlocked the cheapest half of the base skills and the starting class abilities (out of 4 classes total) - The lore, while interesting, is only tangentially delivered via item/enemy info and short NPC lines in the home base - That one stereotypical gen-Z NPC, Argentea, is annoying as fcuk

After finishing the game on Neuromancy (hardest difficulty) + having played through countless other rogue-lites on max difficulty settings, I can definitely say that this is a 10/10 If I remember correctly I've never gave a rogue-lite a clean 10/10... maybe Dead Cells and/or Returnal. GAMEPLAY 10/10 SUPER fast paced first-person shooter that massively rewards good precision + movement! DIFFICULTY 10/10 It just feels perfectly balanced on all 3 difficulties. STORY 10/10 Very interesting + a lot of charm + amazing voice acting + everything makes sense in the universe they've built. Music/OST 10/10 One banger after another! If you want to take a look, here is my run on Neuromancy with Juggernaut (SPOILER ALERT obviously): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iKwpdwaiIY
