A great game that puts together the zombie apocalypse and Fallout 2 like turn based combat and graphics style. The game is enjoyable. It works well on Steam Deck, but has crashes at every location and every 15 minutes on Windows 11. I remember first time I played this game in 2014 when it was first released. And there were no such huge crash issues at that time. So now be prepared for frequent saves and loads after crash. If you feel nervous about that - don't play this game. Otherwise it's a real gem.

It is crazy that this game came out in 2014!! A lot of the small details about a pandemic sweeping the globe and the public's attitude towards it, especially the little bits of lore you find and can read in the school's library, still ring true to our attitudes towards the covid pandemic. That game play is right up my alley, point and click, turn-based strategy, with some very easy to understand and practical base building. I just really, really, REALLY wish the game wouldn't crash every 30 minutes or so.

It's janky. Fairly unstable. Apparently has troubles running on modern systems. But damn, is it a good game. I've always liked the idea of a base-building game where you go out and loot a billion pounds of shit across the city to make a safe haven for people during a zombie apocalypse, and by god, that's what this is. It's also got some pretty damn good writing, especially with environmental storytelling. A bit dated in some of the references, but that's okay because they're references from a time when things were good and not beaten to death within 2 weeks. Very janky, though.

April 2024

Good game. Why, you may ask? Well, let me tell you. The most obvious cons will be the clunkiness of the interfaces and UI, as well as the tremendous bugs. And yet, no game has filled the hunger I have for zombie games and RPGs as this. Zombies are one of my hyperfixations, and some of my favorite genres are base building/management, RPGs, and strategy. I love the writing, and the many characters I meet along the way. I especially love the debate aspect where there are leaders whom other members follow. However, I do wish that they did give more depth to some characters. It felt like for a few characters, they didn't really interact with others or contribute much story-wise. All in all, I find it the best zombie game. I hope for a remake or sequel that expands on character depth, story, with special care taken to improve the interface and bugs. If anyone has any suggestions for games to try like this... please let me know. Nothing has scratched my base building/management with combat itch like Dead State has.

This is one of my favorite games ever. I have replayed it a few times and tried very hard to locate anything similar, but couldn't really find anything that could compare to this.
