Dead Space: A Terrifying Return The Dead Space Remake makes the game more scary and terrifying thanks to the upgrades in its visuals, Necromorphs are frightening in general and there are moments in the game when they can get a jump on you and spook you even if you go with the mindset of expecting them from any vent. That being said, looks aren't the only thing the remake changes, there are now more areas with fire, explosions, electrical currents, and all sorts of environmental hazards. The game also features more areas with gravity zero, details, Issac can now speak as a character rather than being mute (which is wonderful), and even a secret ending for beating the game in new game+. All of this makes this Remake the best way to revive the fear in Dead Space. The Ishimura: A Ship of Horrors and Hardships Moving onto the main attraction, the Ishimura is a huge location that harbors some of the most dangerous abominations, necromorphs. These come in a lot of different varieties and can be tough to fight, and that's because Dead Space is a hard game. Fighting the same enemy in gravity zero results in a different approach to combat, and some foes can be so deadly that they can dispatch you in seconds. The choice of what part to dismember changes how you think in each fight, such as targeting the arms to avoid damage or reducing the mobility of enemies by targeting their legs, to add to that one must also conserve ammo, for there are bosses and hoarders to eliminate. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3370287888 The game has optional zones where one can find extra ammo, upgrades, and other goodies, however, each of these zones has the risk of having foes in them. It creates an interesting and enjoyable approach to exploring the ship, as one must ponder whenever deviating from the main path to get some much-needed resources worth the jumpscare and extra necromorphs. The level design will at times force backtracking back into the horror of previously visited areas now with new guesses and moving through the ship is also as dangerous due to fans and rolling objects.
The Hunter: The Scariest Thing Since Your Childhood Closet In addition to normal enemies, Dead Space has bosses such as the Leviathan, and the Hivemind, but none are as scary as the Hunter. This massive unit of a monster will start chasing the player through certain areas of the Ishimura, adding tension and keeping you on edge and the best part is: you cannot kill it! That's right, with the Hunter stalking the player and appearing at the worst of times, it reinforces the fear factor of the game and the challenge as he can be accompanied by normal foes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3370288374 And that is a good detail of Dead Space, that each boss fight is interesting and different, from fighting stalking monsters to creatures the size of a ship and more, each of those encounters is a marvel of a fight. Knowing how to best use your weapons and tackle each boss is essential to survive. Noises That Cause Fear Finally, I cannot leave out the sound design in Dead Space, which is as eerie as the visuals of the game. Every creak, roar, and music spikes has been meticulously crafted to scare you and send chills down your spine. The noises don't stop at the monsters, as the machinery also makes ghostly hums and the silence of space at times can be even worse. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3370287661 The voice actors do a good job, with Isacc being a good protagonist even if he is not Mr Charisma. The human and necromorph screams can be unsettling at times as you explore the ships, and each member of the cast delivers when it comes to believable characters. Price Point Analysis and Replayability For 60 bucks this is a must-buy for survival horror fans, is the definitive way to play Dead Space and its origins! The game lasted me around 10 hours, and I heard from folks that the average is 13 hours, that is without going through the new game+ to experience the new ending and complete Isacc's upgrades and arsenal. While a bit on the short side, each segment is a blast, and the only downside could be that perhaps Chapters 6 and 7 were a bit too long. Conclusion The Dead Space Remake hits all the right notes of what a remake should be: the definitive way of experiencing a game. Adding new content, redesigning some, and improving upon the foundation, this Remake creates a terrifying adventure that is not for the faint of heart and that is as brutal as scary. Face off the fears of space and say hi to the Hunter for me!

[TH]
The Good
[/TH] [TH]
The Bad
[/TH]

[*] ✔️A symphonic of horrors where every sound raises your blood pressure. [*] ✔️New paths and areas added to shake up things, along with new hazards. [*] ✔️The Hunter adds tension as he tracks you through the ship and appears out of nowhere. [*] ✔️An Isacc that speaks! Making the character come alive on screen more compared to the original. [*] ✔️Beautiful graphics that make the atrocity of the Necromorphs and the Ishimura more believable. 2013 : Dead Space 3 sells 605,000 copies in it’s first month. Fairly good for a niche title, but “underperformed” EA’s expectations, thus canned the franchise for a decade and 4 years later, closed down Visceral Games after working on the Battlefield franchise. 2023 : DS1 Remake is a critical darling, doesn’t sell well initially, but it is rumored to have sold at least 2 million copies in the span of 12 months. Fantastic numbers for a niche title, but “underperformed” EA’s expectations, thus canning the franchise once more and moved Motive as a “support Battlefield studio”. The more things change, the more they stay the same and the AAA industry is forever doomed to repeat the same mistakes it never learns from. I finished the original Dead Space about 3 or 4 times before and the remake’s positive critical response doesn’t lie, the remake is truly a fantastic retelling of the first game that takes into account the existence of the sequels to expand on it’s lore. It makes a TON of great changes to the story, like giving Isaac a voice like in the sequels, it gives some secondary characters more things to do beyond existing in audio logs and generally moving the gameplay loop on-par with the sequels, like making the zero-g sections full 6dof like in the sequels. Personally, I recommend changing control scheme to the Dead Space 2 config, it hasn’t aged one bit and still plays fantastic. Or maybe it's muscle memory from playing DS2 so much years ago, hard to say. Also the USG Ishimura is fully interconnected and beyond tram rail traversal or straight up dying, there are no loading screens to speak of, which is also used to add some secondary objectives that fully flesh out some details that never got expanded upon in the original version, making the Ishimura itself more “lived in” and it’s inhabitants (or at least the ones still alive) more proactive and lively, despite the absolute madness of the Necromorph scourge. From a technical standpoint, the game looks absolutely STUNNING and you can cut the atmosphere with a knife (or plasma cutter) due to how detailed and tense it feels, it’s just a darn shame the traverse stutters never got fixed , that’s a genuine mood killer. I use a Ryzen 7 5700X, the game is installed on a NVMe SSD and the stutters are UNBEARABLE at times, especially after clearing the shader cache or installing a new driver update. I use a Freesync monitor, so the stutters don't bother me that much. I consider it 'playable' and even 'enjoyable' most of the time, but YMMV . Keep this in mind if you have a less powerful CPU . I heard it runs decently well on a Steam Deck and the stutter issue is somewhat alleviated on Linux, worth giving it a try if possible. I played this first on the EA App through GamePass, so excuse the small play time for this Steam review. By the way, no EA App necessary for the Steam version , Altman be praised! Despite the technical grievances, I still enjoyed this game immensely, to the point of giving it a glowing praise and a hearty recommendation from me, heck, I’ll even go as far as saying that this is a 10/10 remake. Get as cheap as possible because of the technical issues and screw EA for killing this franchise a second time.

The Dead Space remake. An awesome game that follows closely to the original 2008 version but allowing new places to explore. All the weapons are here waiting to be discovered rather then purchased as in the original game. Graphics: Beautiful and scary. The halls are brooding and the atmosphere is drenched with palpable fear. I love it. Audio: Music is muted and the atmospheric sounds in the environment are brought out in full effect. Walking through a hallway and listening for creatures is a treat. The only thing I miss is the train between levels. The scary sound it made at the end of each level. Otherwise, highly recommended!

Make us whole again, Isaac. This is a remake of the 2008 original game of the same name. This review will assume you've either played the original or are unbothered by minor mechanical and story spoilers. These are the main differences between the original and the remake: - Improved visuals - Issac now has a voice, the character did not speak at all in the first game. Dead Space 2 was when he got a voice. - The limb system is improved, flesh will tear off the bone before more force is required to maim a necromorph. - Upgrades are slightly different, arguably improved - Some of the puzzles are different, for instance that horrible sequence where the ADS cannons are offline in the original is dramatically improved. Tech and Performance On the following specs I was able to run the game at the high preset at 1440p around 50-90FPS. However, I ended up enabling V-sync to lock it at 60 because the fluctuation became too much. Ryzen 5 5600X RTX3070 32GB DDR4 @ 3600Mhz https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3121661740 In addition to the visuals, the game does a much better job at conveying what is actually going on while still being vaguely mysterious. Of course this is difficult to achieve having played the other two games numerous times. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3121665732 The one improvement I wished was in the remake is the ability to alter what the locator is looking for. Such that you're able to find benches, stores or save stations easier. There are other differences as well such as needing security clearance to open certain lockers or storage units. You won't miss them, it's part of the story. Previously, you would have needed to use a power node to open doors. A resource used otherwise to upgrade weapons or your suit. Kind of like using a shiv in the Last of Us to open doors. The Gist This is a great remake, if it doesn't inspire Dead Space 2 and 3 to also get remade I hope at the very least in reignites interest in the franchise and Dead Space 4 gets made. If you've found this review helpful, consider following my curation — Station Argus Semi-Unrelated: Using genre tags and nomenclature of labels There are many people that describe this series as “Survival Horror”. And they also say that Dead Space 3 specifically strays from this path becoming an “action” game. Well, I've got news for those people, Dead Space was always an action game — just set with a horror aesthetic and theme. What I believe people intend on conveying when they say “survival horror” is that there is resource scarcity that requires management that makes combat more difficult. Which is not untrue of Dead Space, but on the medium difficulty there's nearly no place where you won't have health packs or ammo. In my understanding, the term “survival” — at least in regards to genre tags — implies there is something akin to tending to needs like hunger, thirst, sleep, etc. But for whatever reason, the survival part of “survival horror” seems to only be used in the more traditional sense. The sense where you are trying to not die. Which can be applied to a considerably large number of games. In any case, I consider the Dead Space series, or games like Resident Evil 4 and older to be action games set in a horror theme. The original 3 Resident Evil games, not the remakes, are what I truly think of when the term Survival Horror is used — 'tank' controls, inability to aim precisely and fixed cameras. But that's just my two cents.
