It's a good metroidvania that just falls short of greatness. Still good for a one-off playthrough when on discount. PROs - A unique cyberpunk + dead space-ish aesthetic that oozes atmosphere. - Melee combat is pretty fluid. - Enemies are distinct and immediately recognizable, meaning you can determine their attack patterns immediately. - Not as many annoying flying enemies as in other metroidvanias (the Castlevania medusa head type enemies). - Very, very forgiving Invincibility frames for dodging and frames for parrying. - Slight roguelite influences in the form of temporary power-ups that can be found, making you want to keep going on while you have a bunch of skills and buffs stacked. - Very few insta-death drop pits. CONs - Forgettable music. - Bunch of customization options initially shows promise, but ultimately prove to be rather shallow. There isn't truly much variation to make distinctive builds. - Platforms are sometimes inconsistent with what can be edge grabbed and what can be jumped through. You just have to use trial and error and lean on the fly. - Interesting looking skill tree (the drone skills) that ultimately only open up mid-late game, meaning you'll probably fiddle with it a bit and then the game ends. - Ranged combat feels a bit tacked on, there's no way to aim at an angle, you can only shoot straight like old school arcade shooters. - Despite the grimdark setting and aesthetic, feels a bit too easy, taking away much of the tension of the game. A lot of it has to do with how easy it is to get a bunch of HP, up to 20 healing orbs on hand, and the very forgiving dodge I-frames. Most bosses are also not very aggressive, meaning you can usually heal up while on the run. - While atmosphere is amazing, the storyline, lore and endings are simply not expanded upon enough, leaving a confusing mess of a plot.

<No simple Rating> Dark Light is a Pandora's box of quality content, the problem I find that most other reviewers seem to share is the tough accessibility. This game sadly adopts the tell don't show mentality to teach the player. Over that hill you will find a true master piece. Game play is the most fantastic part of Dark Light, amazing movement mechanics mixed with interesting weapons allow for quality, high thrill content. Another point is the amazing artwork, you can tell the potential this series could have with a bigger budget. So many great nods and references as well which create truly fun experience. This game definitely could use more touch up but it is one of my favorite games of all time.

Played after additional features were added in - that being said, overall I highly recommend the game. 1. Combat is pretty sweet giving you tons of variety in terms of weapons, both melee and ranged, as well as skills and utility items to help you out dealing with encounters. There are only a couple of utility / throw-able items but I think they just about serve their purpose. They stay relevant even until the final moments of the game. 2. Role-playing elements such as stat upgrading, weapon upgrading and gem usage are pretty straight forward. However, some of the interfaces need a bit of work and maybe a bit more explanation on the stats could benefit the game. Inventory management is so-so, and the form of currency in this game has some bloat to it. I really don't know why you have to convert shards to actual usable currency though the value seems to double in the conversion. (I think that's it) 3. Presentation is great, I love the art style though character models are pretty limited. Hope they fix some climbing animations particularly with ladders facing the screen -- where the character model climbs them sideways. I've seen old video where the character model climbs using broken cables and those seem to look better. I love the pixel mode option giving the models a retro vibe. I'm not much of a fan of 3D side-scrollers to be honest. Sound track is pretty decent in building the mood in key moments like exploration and boss / arena sections. 4. The game attempts to explain the existence of a NG+ which is applicable to a dark sci-fi title, though replaying the game multiple times for very middling reasons / decision points seem to be a bit of a unnecessary fat. The only thing good about these trophies are that they are pretty rare so the have some bling factor to them. If you're some sort of an achievement enthusiast, then this might be for you. I'd say it's a pretty easy 100% if you put your back into it. The game has a total of seven endings and some faction-related trophies. I'd recommend backing-up your saves to get some of them. Faction related decisions begin towards the later half of the game, so for practicality I'd save copies from that point to make running achievements slightly bearable. Like I said pretty, awesome title for some Souls-Vania sort of vibe.

Overall: Great concept, but poor/unfinished delivery, for 11$ its still a steal TBH ***SPOILER*** Pros*** Visual: Looks nice for what it is. Even without 4k raytracing it looks beautiful and atmospheric enough to please the eye. I love the implementation especially because I have been playing almost exclusively on my SD which definitely appreciates this type of technique. Mechanic: Movement and combat feel insanely fun. There is some intentional handicap with your stamina bar that some people don't like, but I think it fits the atmosphere. In some ways it almost feels too good, considering there is a stamina handicap for your combat. Con*** Upgrades: The stats compete for money and scale in cost which is OK, but they also compete for money with weapon upgrades. On top of that the weapon upgrades don't even seem to work properly with resources. I basically maxed out my damage first and the game got EZ. They leave so much on the table in terms of upgrades (gems don't mix, upgrade stones small or medium are not interchangeable for some reason, no armor upgrades). This is basically why I ignored weapon upgrades until my stats were insanely expensive. The drone upgrades provide cool abilities but the abilities are just not well balanced. Some abilities feel useless compared to weapon damage which is strange for how much energy they cost to use. Levels: Mostly fun to explore but there are some areas which are seemingly useless. Almost like they intentionally avoided procedural levels, but then never got around to filling up the main map. Also the map does not really seem to function properly sometimes. Variety: Enemy and item variety is interesting but quite limited. Drone: This game uses the follow drone as a mechanic to reveal things, its hardly ever even noticeable in game play, so I'm not sure what to say about it other than it should effect things more and maybe let you control it in a more interesting way. Summary*** Hopefully the devs see this Recommendations: 1)I Would not mind some procedural dungeons. There is a bit of grinding encouraged but without proper balance it makes for a strange time. Stretching out the bosses with some procedural dungeons would be OK. 2) Upgrades really need work. Armor upgrades and RNG weapon stats, expanded follower system, mixing gems, drone upgrades(more drones and just more usability of drones and illumination system flavor in general) would be a fun add. 3) Obviously variety requires a LOT more time than some technical changes and makes balance a bigger issue BUT, the story LITERALLY involves an infinitely repeating universe for the new game plus. Cramming an expansion into this game to solve these issues would make me happy and I would love to purchase that. This game feels like it has the potential to be incredible. With some polish this could easily sell as a 30-40$ game. With a multiplayer kit on top of these changes I would pay 50$ just for that expansion! Please comment how you feel! Hopefully we can get it!
