Dark Light is a really awesome 2D platformer. + Controls are precise and smooth. + Combat on higher difficulties is challenging and fun. + Good atmosphere. + Graphics, especially the backgrounds as well as animations are really good. o Music/sound are solid, there are some nice tracks, sound effects lack a bit. - Navigation (where do I go next?) is quite confusing sometimes. (The game does not end after the Kukulkan/Dragon boss fight, just enter the appearing door/portal on the left side!) - Inventory, skill and menu management is really clunky. The later levels feel more polished than the early ones. You can feel that a really dedicated team poured their passion and heartblood into this game. Playing it brought back memories of the old Castlevania games, for good measure some Darksouls elements like retrieve your currency on death or lose it, have been implemented.

What a Gem this game is. SO FUN! There is a great pace of progress, as you make your way through the game. You always feel like you are making some sort of progress. Even if you die. Though you do lose all your shards, you can recover them if you go back to where you died. If you died to a fall it will be where you were before you fell to your death which is nice. Fun customization for whichever build you are tryin to go for. Are you a melee junky? a shoot em up person? want to be a caster? (though caster is alittle bit into it). Its tons of fun, great weapons with different abilities and effects. Melee weapons have some awesome moves. its amazing. Probably my favorite game of the year for Metroidvania style games. And probably my 2nd most played game that i am playing at the moment. Its refreshing, for me when i want a break from my main game i play. I just jump in and have some fun. Definately recomend, even if metroidvania is not one's style of game. Its just a blast! Truly loving it.

It's a good metroidvania that just falls short of greatness. Still good for a one-off playthrough when on discount. PROs - A unique cyberpunk + dead space-ish aesthetic that oozes atmosphere. - Melee combat is pretty fluid. - Enemies are distinct and immediately recognizable, meaning you can determine their attack patterns immediately. - Not as many annoying flying enemies as in other metroidvanias (the Castlevania medusa head type enemies). - Very, very forgiving Invincibility frames for dodging and frames for parrying. - Slight roguelite influences in the form of temporary power-ups that can be found, making you want to keep going on while you have a bunch of skills and buffs stacked. - Very few insta-death drop pits. CONs - Forgettable music. - Bunch of customization options initially shows promise, but ultimately prove to be rather shallow. There isn't truly much variation to make distinctive builds. - Platforms are sometimes inconsistent with what can be edge grabbed and what can be jumped through. You just have to use trial and error and lean on the fly. - Interesting looking skill tree (the drone skills) that ultimately only open up mid-late game, meaning you'll probably fiddle with it a bit and then the game ends. - Ranged combat feels a bit tacked on, there's no way to aim at an angle, you can only shoot straight like old school arcade shooters. - Despite the grimdark setting and aesthetic, feels a bit too easy, taking away much of the tension of the game. A lot of it has to do with how easy it is to get a bunch of HP, up to 20 healing orbs on hand, and the very forgiving dodge I-frames. Most bosses are also not very aggressive, meaning you can usually heal up while on the run. - While atmosphere is amazing, the storyline, lore and endings are simply not expanded upon enough, leaving a confusing mess of a plot.

<No simple Rating> Dark Light is a Pandora's box of quality content, the problem I find that most other reviewers seem to share is the tough accessibility. This game sadly adopts the tell don't show mentality to teach the player. Over that hill you will find a true master piece. Game play is the most fantastic part of Dark Light, amazing movement mechanics mixed with interesting weapons allow for quality, high thrill content. Another point is the amazing artwork, you can tell the potential this series could have with a bigger budget. So many great nods and references as well which create truly fun experience. This game definitely could use more touch up but it is one of my favorite games of all time.
