Daemon x Machina, is cool, its like the most anime game I've ever played. Ill be honest, I have skipped all of the story dialog because I just...didn't care, didn't feel a reason to care either. Its a fun game, but I'd probably wait for a sale putting it $30 or lower. Btw if you think this looks like armored core but anime its because it kinda is, and many of the devs who worked of DxM worked on OG armored core.

If you enjoy mecha games, then this one is definitely a good choice - though if you are looking for something particularly gritty, you would be better off going with Armored Core, as while Daemon x Machina doesn't stray far from the usual existential anime feel, the art style and story could have certainly used more time to cook if they were really trying to go for something foreboding. As other reviews have mentioned, there's a lot of (sometimes quite unnecessary) dialogue - and unlike games like Armored Core or Ace Combat that have similar mission formats, this dialogue is not short nor sweet enough to be properly condensed into each mission's runtime, leading to cutscenes, random breaks in the combat, or periods where you outright can't damage the enemy because the dialogue hasn't caught up to a specific scripted point. This can be irritating, but in general it doesn't actually do a whole lot to risk your score or completion time, so there isn't any real harm done besides forcing you to listen to a bunch of generic anime chatter. I wouldn't consider this a reason NOT to get the game, since the gameplay itself more than makes up for it. When it comes to gameplay, the difficulty is determined by your build, first and foremost. I beat every mission on my first try, but that's because I was running a build that focused on evasion, healing, and whittling down the enemy from outside of their range. Overall, DxM has a high amount of variety, though it pales in comparison to Armored Core because most of this title's equipment options are simply upgrades of previous pieces of gear, and there are few unique weapons that actually have special attributes applied to them. Additionally, in Armored Core the shop system is significantly more useful, but in DxM you're effectively forced to spend time and credits developing any gear you want, unless you're lucky enough to loot it off of the battlefield. This makes obtaining specific components quite difficult for someone who wants to have a variety of specialized builds. DxM brings infantry action to a couple of the missions - and a whole tech tree for upgrading your own character as a cyborg. However, these are so few and far between that it's generally pointless to focus on these mechanics with your already limited resources. Soundtrack is a banger. 10/10 with no complaints in this regard - aside from the fact that it's better off being listened to outside of the game itself because there's no way to drown out all the sound effects and dialogue otherwise being layered on top of it. In conclusion; get the game when it's on sale if you can. It's great by Nintendo Switch standards - but it just didn't have enough time in the oven to compare to the true titans of Mecha.

Yes, it's "Anime Armored Core", but temper your expectations. Here's the scoop on this game... The Story: The story is nonsensical... and annoying intrusive at times ; it's a B-level anime plot that feels like it's missing about half the contextual information needed to glue it all together. Despite being the biggest portion of the game available (for reasons described later), it's probably the weakest part of the whole game. There are several moments in the game where it straight-up stops combat to open up a dialogue screen for the sake of plot advancement. Yes, it's as annoying as it sounds. That said, it's not hard to skip. "Press and hold ESC or START to skip" your way to a more enjoyable gaming experience. And hey, if you don't mind cheesy and ludicrously thin plot lines, bon appétit! Re-playable Content! Except Not Really... Once you finish the campaign, there's little reason to replay it. Except to grab the odd weapon or two you might have missed. Once you've done the campaign, as a solo player, you've seen pretty much all of what the game has to offer... unless, that is, you don't mind doing content designed for co-op by yourself. Speaking of which... Bring a Friend, Lest Ye Be Lonely The multiplayer lobbies - all of them- are empty. Bring a friend if you want to enjoy the multiplayer. The content that is there is designed for more than one person to tackle, so you either need to get pretty good at the game and its intricacies and solo the bosses, or you're gonna need to phone a friend and convince them to buy this game, finish the campaign (not necessary, but highly recommended), and join you. A Small(ish) Selection of Parts For a game about battling with customizable big-and-scary looking mecha, there's not as much customization in the parts category as I would have hoped. It's not egregiously lacking, but when comparing it to its next door neighbor, the Armored Core series, it comes up lacking. So why do I recommend the game? The moment-to-moment gameplay is fun. When it's not being interrupted by thin plot line segments, that is. It's not the prettiest, it's not the most technical, and it's certainly not the most cohesive experience I've had with these kinds of games before, but when I'm in the field shooting entire armies' worth of munitions at giant "screw-you" cannons, mobile battle suits, and colossal transforming creatures, I'm having a blast while doing it, and to me, that's what matters most.

My hours are a lie. I have an additional 370+ on Switch, plus however long I spent on my playthrough of the Epic Games version. [Edit: So apparently I have 68 hours and 22 minutes clocked in the Epic Version. Jesus...] You can also throw in the 65+ hours I spent playing the game's prototype. It goes without saying, this is basically Armored Core lite. Though on the other hand, this is also, generally, a love letter to the mecha genre. From the fast gameplay, to the various niche references you could find here and there, to Char and Amuro's Japanese VA's literally being present, heck, even Shoji (Macross & Armored Core) is here as the mechanical designer. But, in my opinion, this game is basically Armored Core X Ace Combat X Zone of the Enders X Mobile Suit Gundam (with a hint of Evangelion, maybe.) It helps that the composers previously worked on Ace Combat 4, 5, 6, 0, and Assault Horizon...Plus the fact that getting into this, I was coming from Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception. Specifically, I would say this is Ace Combat X Armored Core, but more-so Ace Combat (story-wise at least.) The gameplay, I would say seems like a mix between Armored Core 4/ For Answer, and Armored Core V/ Verdict Day. Heck, the mechs in the games, Arsenals, look a lot like the ACs from Armored Core V. Customization, while lacking in some areas, is also something that can be played around with. Not to mention the game breaking builds you can find in, say, PVP. Moreover, I wish parts had more variety, both functionally and aesthetically. There's slight differences, sure, but people aren't kidding when they say the silhouettes are more or less the same. (Still, I guess Armored Core isn't that much better in some places, I suppose.) Meanwhile, even if kinda useless, I really wish Outer Plugsuits and Edit Arsenals were more diverse. I'm talking collectables that you can get and whatnot. But, they're reduced to DLC... Is the game easy? Yeah, pretty much. But I feel like it's by design. Remember, when this came out (2019), mecha was kinda "dead", untouched. Though, difficulty lies in the Coop bosses. (Especially Eclipse and Zeruchroar.) Either way, you end up feeling like a Demi-God or a Demon. (See what I did there?) The game feels great to play. Is the story cheesy, over-the-top, and convoluted? Oh, totally. Frankly, most of the actual lore is in the sourcebook, and thus, can't be found in-game, sadly. Even so, I enjoy the world-building. Just wish it was expanded upon. Is the game flawed? Of course. No game is perfect, and frankly, this one was developed in a span of 2-3 years. But, I wouldn't have it any other way. Even if a base, it's pretty damn good for what it is. My main gripes with DXM have to start with the lack of Outer usage/ Outer combat, mechanically speaking. For those who don't know, Outers are basically super-humans. (Possibly a reference to New-Types, actually. Perhaps even Enders-- Yup, I hear it now, lol.) Basically, you can get out your mech in this game, but you can't exactly do much. Like, just imagine if Outers could fight each other with some form of CQC. After all, our characters in the game are quite powerful on their own. I'd like to see that portrayed to its fullest. Heck, in the story's ongoing retelling, Star Reclaimer, it mentions that they're strong enough to punch holes in walls and dent the ground. Still, I really love the perspective of things as a mere human compared to the machines you face or pilot. I like to think that the devs scaled everything according to the Rookie. Things like buildings, stairs, seats, even cars, they're scaled properly, for the most part. There's even some stairs you can walk up! Albeit they're only present in like 3 maps max, but still. Secondly, I feel like the lobby especially is lacking. Would've been cool to see more of the world outside of the Battlefields. Something reminiscent of the "Daily Life" mode from the Attack on Titan games. Then, obviously, while the story is interesting, it's also pretty lacking. (Though, personally, I still don't get the "too many characters" complaint. I mean, you're working alongside 4 large consortiums and about a dozen Mercenary groups. If anything, the roster's rotation is a little too fixed. Still, I guess that's why the other players exist. To fill the void. (Would be nice to see cannon fodder mercs though...)) Speaking of players and the story, it would've been pretty cool if you could go through the game with at least one other player. That's a really common complaint, actually. But, who knows, maybe someone'll mod that in, if possible. Another thing that would be cool is a proper single-player arena mode, to take a page out of Armored Core's book. The lack of it just feels...odd. Maybe at least an endless mode of sorts. Lastly, I really wish you could freely explore the maps. Say Free Flight from the Ace Combat games. I mean, some of the maps are huge. Back during the prototype, I got a kick out of just walking through Grace City as an Outer. The Black Lotus missions gave you much space too. And the fight against Grief on the mission "Prevent Data Capture" is my favorite...Even with his plot armor. And like, imagine just traversing the area as an Outer, indulging yourself in the lands of Oval, your Arsenal sitting at a distance, almost watching over you from afar. And overall, I just...really love this game, man. [Edit 2: And the fact that I played through the story again just to get the achievements (since they didn't auto-unlock with the cross save) translates that much.] I just wish it utilized itself more, and that it was more popular...I'd say this is my first mech game, but I played LBX on the 3DS prior. Plus some of the Transformers games, if they count. Even so, this game reintroduced me to mecha, and man, what an introduction... I really do want to see this newfound IP built upon. Here's to Titanic Scion. ... I've spent about 2 hours writing this. Geez...
