Read This If You're Unsure Whether the Game Is Worth Buying and Draw Your Own Conclusions I decided to organize some key points to consider before buying the game so that you donā€™t get frustrated and are aware of what to expect if you're really interested in a new mecha game. Low Budget [*] The game seems to have had a very modest budget, as they appear to have cut costs by making simple animations for character dialogues, using only text boxes without anything on the screen for you to read through. There are so few cutscenes that you only remember the ones where the Immortals appear and the ones near the end of the game, which are pretty cool but scarce... [*] Besides the cutscenes, thereā€™s barely any variety in maps. I understand that the maps look similar because of the setting, but seriously? All bases are practically identical, with just one or two different enemies. You mostly fight enemy mechas from other factions, and the few maps that do look different and interesting, you only play on them twice (such as a map with white sand and red vegetation and another set in a city during a blizzard storm). There are more points to mention, but just by playing, you can feel that the budget wasnā€™t generous or, if it was, the devs were just lazy when designing the level maps. Protagonist [*] The main character barely appears in scenes (or inside the mecha) during cutscenes. I find this weird because they try to make it seem like your character is important to the story, yet you donā€™t say a single line of dialogue, and none of your companions interact with you (beyond generic lines). This bothers me a lot because it makes it hard to get attached to any characters, which discourages me from trying to create a cool character myself. Gameplay [*] The gameplay is very solid you really feel the satisfaction of destroying enemies with assault weapons. The weapon-switching system is great, and you can even eject from your Arsenal and play as your pilot (although the gameplay for the pilot is really bad). At least you have a chance to defeat a boss if you were close to winning but got taken down. However, I believe that, like me, you wonā€™t have the patience to keep playing as the pilot against enemy Arsenals since itā€™s slower and much harder. Itā€™s better to just restart the mission and try again. Other than that, my only real complaint is that the Y-axis mobility for the mecha is pretty bad. You donā€™t have the same fluidity you do when moving horizontally, and if youā€™re flying and need to fight enemies on the ground, you end up dropping in an awkward and clunky way. Content [*] Thereā€™s a decent amount of content in the game you have plenty of weapons to try out, swords to craft, shields, and modifications for your mecha. I really liked the variety of different parts you can equip to make your mecha unique (to some extent). However, acquiring certain parts requires a tedious grind, and regardless of the armor you have, youā€™ll always get melted by a boss laser lol. Repetition [*] The game tends to be VERY repetitive. You play simple missions where you just defeat enemies over and over about 300 times without much variation. Since these missions exist mainly for farming mecha parts and money, grinding them gets really boring. There are too many missions without much variety. At least there are some boss fights, which are fun because you can test different weapons. But when you combine the lack of map variation, repetitive and uninspiring missions, and an uninteresting grind, you can quickly get bored and might not even finish the game. This is the biggest reason why Iā€™m giving this warning. Story (No Spoilers) [*] The story is very weak. You donā€™t feel any attachment to the characters, and most of the time, youā€™ll just think, ā€œokay, whatever.ā€ Even in tense moments, you donā€™t feel invested enough in the scene for it to have an impact. The characters have their own personalities, but because your protagonist is practically invisible and the story isnā€™t that engaging (though it gets more fun in the final missions), it makes me not care about them at all. You donā€™t get to know anyone properly, so all the characters feel extremely shallow. Adding that to the issues I mentioned earlier, the whole experience can feel pretty dull. However, the story is still fun to rush through when it gets to the interesting moments (cutscenes), since the game is sorely lacking in those. Conclusion [*] I pointed out several issues that bothered me, but is the game worth it? The answer is: it depends. Since Iā€™m a fan of musou-style games, I have a higher tolerance for repetition, so I did enjoy farming some parts and progressing through the stages while listening to a podcast. However, I wonā€™t lie this game is not for everyone. You have to be REALLY craving a mecha game, because there are better alternatives like Armored Core 6 or Project Nimbus: Complete Edition, both of which have great stories and more engaging gameplay. Now, you might ask, ā€œWhy did I give it a positive review despite my criticisms?ā€ Simple just because I still managed to have fun to some extent. The boss fights are cool, especially the final one, and the combat system itself is enjoyable. So, Iā€™d say buy this game only if you find it on a good sale and if youā€™re really in the mood for a mecha game. I canā€™t guarantee you wonā€™t regret it, but at the very least, it could be a new experience.

This one was good but could've been much better. If you want a more casual Armored Core experience it is pretty good. It has a few strong points: - Customisation is pretty good. - The combat is very good (tracking could be a bit better) but it allows for quite the multitude of playstyles. - There is even a bit of pilot leveling. - The idea of the stables, the anime tropes per stable and some of the fundamental ideas were good. - I did enjoy some of the characters. And some of the groups grew on me (Savior, Empress,...) - A LOT of fights against other arsenals (this game's gears/mecha/mobile suits/wanzers) - A few character twists and the likes I enjoyed. Downsides: - Some characters that really annoyed me like Johnny G. - The main story line has 2 endings. Only did one. but it is literally just a choice at the end. - The mission variety is limited. - The story has a lot of good ideas but falls short in that a lot of character development is condensed, skipped with the arcs kinda bouncing around. - The fact there are so many interesting stables becomes painful once you realize you can't join any. - They keep calling you Rookie. Forever. - You can make no decisions, the game makes it for you. Which sucks. - A friendship and a romance mechanic + joining a stable would really have added replay value. Especially if they had a few routes + endings. - Some plot points or satisfying things are not shown. (some interactions at the end within stables would've been awesome) - The ending was 'meh'. Rushed and bland. Worth picking up but only expect a 'good' game. No more, no less. Story actually picks up suddenly after a lull. Push through if you're bored. Things get more interesting later.

Daemon x Machina, is cool, its like the most anime game I've ever played. Ill be honest, I have skipped all of the story dialog because I just...didn't care, didn't feel a reason to care either. Its a fun game, but I'd probably wait for a sale putting it $30 or lower. Btw if you think this looks like armored core but anime its because it kinda is, and many of the devs who worked of DxM worked on OG armored core.

If you enjoy mecha games, then this one is definitely a good choice - though if you are looking for something particularly gritty, you would be better off going with Armored Core, as while Daemon x Machina doesn't stray far from the usual existential anime feel, the art style and story could have certainly used more time to cook if they were really trying to go for something foreboding. As other reviews have mentioned, there's a lot of (sometimes quite unnecessary) dialogue - and unlike games like Armored Core or Ace Combat that have similar mission formats, this dialogue is not short nor sweet enough to be properly condensed into each mission's runtime, leading to cutscenes, random breaks in the combat, or periods where you outright can't damage the enemy because the dialogue hasn't caught up to a specific scripted point. This can be irritating, but in general it doesn't actually do a whole lot to risk your score or completion time, so there isn't any real harm done besides forcing you to listen to a bunch of generic anime chatter. I wouldn't consider this a reason NOT to get the game, since the gameplay itself more than makes up for it. When it comes to gameplay, the difficulty is determined by your build, first and foremost. I beat every mission on my first try, but that's because I was running a build that focused on evasion, healing, and whittling down the enemy from outside of their range. Overall, DxM has a high amount of variety, though it pales in comparison to Armored Core because most of this title's equipment options are simply upgrades of previous pieces of gear, and there are few unique weapons that actually have special attributes applied to them. Additionally, in Armored Core the shop system is significantly more useful, but in DxM you're effectively forced to spend time and credits developing any gear you want, unless you're lucky enough to loot it off of the battlefield. This makes obtaining specific components quite difficult for someone who wants to have a variety of specialized builds. DxM brings infantry action to a couple of the missions - and a whole tech tree for upgrading your own character as a cyborg. However, these are so few and far between that it's generally pointless to focus on these mechanics with your already limited resources. Soundtrack is a banger. 10/10 with no complaints in this regard - aside from the fact that it's better off being listened to outside of the game itself because there's no way to drown out all the sound effects and dialogue otherwise being layered on top of it. In conclusion; get the game when it's on sale if you can. It's great by Nintendo Switch standards - but it just didn't have enough time in the oven to compare to the true titans of Mecha.
