I never really got into Ghosts 'n Goblins, but I love this one. Gameplay-wise it's basically just GnG with some tighter controls, but the atmosphere is a bit darker and inspired by medieval Spanish myths, which helps it stand on its own instead of being purely derivative. The difficulty is very high, but the challenges are expertly crafted and always satisfying to overcome. A simple but sweet overlooked gem.

I DO RECOMMEND this game, BUT, there are a few things u need to know before u buy it and decide to start playing: 1) This game is a tribute to a classic Arcade Games and such Nintendo classics as Ghosts 'n Goblins, Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden, The reason I say this is: the level of difficulty this game has, matches the aforementioned titles and it is hard not to compare it to them, since those games were made for people who had this itch of *GIT GOOD* long before the Dark Souls trend, and CC kinda reflects to them each time U play. Enemy positioning and spawn in some areas is done definitely to annoy u and if u won't give up on going through those areas, u most certainly will be sweaty once u finish them. And that sweat won't feel good - I actually smoked an entire pack of ciggs during the first playthrough of the game(the true ending) and was like: "DA FUG it was so HARD for me". Don't get me wrong - there are games that feel like just casual "run and shoot/stab" with fun elements, but this one IS NOT that kind of a game(I assure U). 2) This 1 partially explains the point #1: U need to finish this game at least once(with all of the dying and repeating levels) just to remember where and what to expect. I had to literally start making notes about certain areas to be sure that I won't wipe there again, since the enemy placement and spawn in this game is just too cruel - and I noticed at least 2 different patterns when u do things differently on some levels. Keep this 1 in mind - this is actually a sound advice, if ur goal is to get the true ending and some of those insane achievements. 3) Items and Weapons are specifically placed on each level. And the reason I say this is: U may want to find ur best suiting weapon for each level and keep sticking to it. It is possible to finish the game with a regular sword or even a flame sword, but in the case of the latter u at least have an increased dmg to counter its negative sides. Some weapons are better for certain areas, while some are better for bosses - but if u chose(switched to another) a weapon in the middle of the level, u most probably are NOT going to get a chance to change it up until the next level(in rare cases u can change weapons a couple of times, but at some levels this luxury is not available). Same goes for Items - Shield is probably the most useless thing there is(even though it lets u tank 1 attack), but the Double Jump Boots and Fairy - switching between those should be done carefully, as in some areas Double Jump makes ur life so much easier, whereas the Fairy will do literally nothing. Ofcourse the developers thought of that, and in some areas u are forced take a *key* and lose ur useful item - but that is optional and in those areas u can actually survive without any item without breaking a sweat. 3) Take it slower than u are used to - game is designed to make u angry and start over, because u are in a constant haste and the level timer does an additional mental load on u. When u are hasty(if u haven't finished the game at least once) u will be for sure making a lot of mistakes and end up dying a lot. The most sound advice I could give on this topic: try to measure what u can or can't do at once - it is truly easy just to go forward like u are used to in games of such type, but I suggest u actually go back in some cases - especially when u see a throng of mobs. Same goes for flying platforms, turtles and toad-sorcerers. I haven't died a single time due to a time out - but I did die a lot due to being hasty. With all that being said, my final thoughts are: This game is hard, it is possible to finish it with some practice and notes being taken. Achievements are probably the only thing that make this game re-playable. Soundtrack is just fantastic. The grim atmosphere of a dying kingdom is just astonishing. The story is pretty solid and self-explanatory. Both endings are great(one being a punishment for being lazy or hasty, while the other feels like a true heroic conclusion to ur adventures). Overall, even though I bought and finished this game on a dare, with my friend watching me all the time - I enjoyed it. There were some *not so great* moments, but once u know how to overcome them - this game becomes worthy of finishing.

Great game. I've beaten the original trilogy of Ghosts 'N Goblins games, as well as the recent GNG Resurrection and fangame Ghosts 'N Demons, and this game clearly draws from that original trilogy. In terms of difficulty, I'd put it about on par with the easiest game in the GNG series, Ghouls 'N Ghosts. It's certainly a challenge and very unforgiving at times, but it's not as hard as Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts or the original Ghosts 'N Goblins. In particular, it seems like Castilla draws from the second game (Ghouls 'N Ghosts) the most out of the trilogy, mimicking Arthur's ability to throw up and down, using some sound effects that sound very similar, and using similar level themes. I should make it clear though: anybody not accustomed to the GNG series will have much more of a challenge with this game than I did. I finished the game for the first time using 19 continues and it took me about 2 hours, however I definitely want to go back and get the other two endings as well as find all the secrets.
