What a fascinating experience. The game is, fundamentally, written by someone with a somewhat limited perspective of the world. Croats are all fascists, Ukrainians are dangerous, and Pizza Hut is a sign of impending doom. In this mode of analysis, the USSR genuinely could have been saved by re-instituting an obscure computerisation programme abandoned in the 70s, landing a man on Mars, and messing around with how much bribe money you give away to the people who do the torturing. Another example- one of the "victory" conditions is successfully launching a first strike on the USA. Meanwhile decommissioning your nuclear arms totally- even if the US does the same- leads to an automatic in-game defeat; a NATO "no-fly" zone is imposed and the USSR is forcefully broken up. There is no way to avoid this, even if DEFCON is at 5 and Ross Perot is president when you decommission. The UI is poor, the English translation is spotty, and it's almost impossible to figure out what anything actually does, but I can't help but feel like that's only in line with the experience.

really good game, difficult and allows you to see all the outcomes of the cold war. As a huge history nerd I would 100% recomend.

Fun game. Very complex and a lot of details and moving parts. Takes a while to understand everything going on. The game itself doesn't explain nearly enough of how things are affected by actions and the tutorial doesn't go nearly deep enough to have a successful play. Highly recommend reading several forums on game play. Also save every turn. Saving often and checking your stat box will help you understand how each event will effect the various relationships you must balance constantly. Saving the USSR is (as it should be) an extremely difficult task, but once you understand the deep dynamics of the game it is very fun for anyone that enjoys political management sims. I also really like how this game can be won (or lost) a number of different ways.
