March 2025
At its core, Crab Champions is a roguelike movement shooter - a bit of a mash-up between the item building of Risk of Rain and the core gameplay and movement of Ultrakill or Doom Eternal, though lighter versions of both. It's accessible and fun at its lower difficulties, and a fair and enjoyable challenge at its higher difficulties. Crab Champions exemplifies the concept of "early access indie game" more than any other game I've played, as it is in active development and is only developed by one dude. The game is clearly playable - I'm sitting at 950+ hours as of writing - but content is still being developed, and certain gameplay concepts are still finding their identity. There are occasional bugs, jank, and things that may feel unbalanced. The developer is extremely active with feedback, and much of where the game is can be tied to direct influence from the community. All of this sums up to be a very charming and special experience that you can't find in many other games nowadays. Not everyone will find 900+ hours out of Crab Champions. There is an initial "unlock" phase early on where you unlock weapons and items that can be used in runs, and that phase goes by quickly. The primary end game loop revolves around beating the "hardest" difficulty on each weapon, which then gives you a medal rank for that weapon (e.g. Silver, Gold, Diamond, etc.). The end game loop is effectively finished once you have gotten the highest medal, Diamond, for every weapon. Afterwards, there is a secret "actual hardest" difficulty, though this isn't for everyone for a variety of reasons. After that point, the game is what you make of it. For $15, most players will have a good time, maybe take a crack at getting all Diamonds and achievements, and then set it down to wait for the next major update. Maybe a fair 20-40 hours of gameplay. Those players will have a pretty good time and probably get their money's worth. For the players that hunger for the buildcrafting of Risk of Rain and the movement and chaos of Doom, and never expected to find the two mashed together into a game where you play as a crab with a gun killing other crabs to funky tropical beats, this is likely to net you hundreds and hundreds of hours. Perhaps you can even be The Crab Champion, but you'll have to beat me to it.

You get to play as a crab with guns and Warframe level movement. You may not like it, but this is what peak gameplay looks like.

Accidentally increased enemy spawns by 10200% Tried the next level anyways Everything dies automatically due to my build About one hour later the last mob dies The game surprisingly still runs The entire stage is covered in items dropped by enemies and chests I press the autoloot button 4 Minutes pass Crash to desktop I can't open any programs, including the task-manager because the game still takes up all 32GB of my RAM, despite having crashed 10/10 has builds that need a PC restart

Love the game, At about 45 hours atm, super replayable, challenging but not impossible achivements and generally a great game! One of the best games i have played in years, Honestly just get it :) Mostly in hopes Devs see this: Honestly my only complaint is that you can only have one saved game Either singleplayer or multiplayer, It would be nice if atleast there was a "multiplayer save slot" and a "singleplayer save slot" at the very least with preferablly 2 multiplayer ones for different friends who want long runs (I will edit this if and when this is changed!) please like if you agree in hopes devs see :) Overall Would highly reccomend this game!!

It's hard to find other games on Steam that will give you the same amount of value that this game does for only $10 ($7 on sale). The game seems generic in the sense that you play as a crab model jumping and flipping around the same preset islands. However -- under the hood, this game has some deeply developed, straight dopaminergic rougelike mechanics. The game has no main menu, and you are instead placed onto your own crab island where all of the weapons and skins are displayed as you collect and unlock them. The game has decently implemented multiplayer as well. You can invite your friends onto your island, and choose to go on a run with them after everyone gears up. If everyone wants to save the run for another time, the host can take everyone back to the lobby and save the run at the start of each biome. The saving feature can be buggy at times, with certain items missing from people's inventories sometimes after choosing to continuing a run. While this should absolutely be fixed, it seems like a minimal tradeoff for the massive utility that is provided by being able to save and load a run, alone and with friends. When compared to other rougelike games, Crab Champions does not have any character to pick from, meaning that you aren't locked into picking items that would best serve the proficiency of the character you picked. Instead, you're prompted to to pick a weapon, melee weapon, and a throwable ability before each run. Since each weapon is fundamentally different in the way that they shoot projectiles and interact with enemies, your choice changes the type of dropped abilities that would seem most attractive to you. For example, if I pick the minigun, which has a high rate of fire, I would benefit from picking chance based perks that would grant me a 5% chance to trigger an effect each time I fire. If I picked the sniper instead, I would probably avoid most of these perks until I was able to increase the its rate of fire and ammo capacity from other perks. This versatility ends up serving the game's replayability very well, especially since there are achievements for beating the game on the highest difficult with each weapon. THOUGHTS: For a one-person project, this game is so bizarrely well-done. The developer is mad talented. The game, alongside its soundtrack feels like a massive passion project of his, and its refreshing to see something with this much work baked into it offered at such a humble price point. I'm not really interested in crabs (or the meme), and it's not like the game is absolutely groundbreaking. It's the way that this little indie game goes against the grain of greedy practices that have become commonplace in the industry of video game development. There have been countless examples of games that have dropped in the last few years that are rarely updated and seemingly stuck in mud. It's these developers that charge $50 - $70 for an incomplete game, only to rub into their customers' faces that they dropped a 'FREE update' after an entire year of not updating it. That is not the case with this game. Despite being worked on by a single developer and only costing $10 on Steam, there have been 4 Major Updates along with countless mini updates since the game released a year ago. It's this work ethic that seems to draw me toward this game the most, especially the way that it serves as a true example of what fair and honest game development should look like. Every time I take a break and come back, there is troves of content to discover and experiment with. You'd literally be stealing it for $7.
