Sept. 2025
CountryBalls Heroes, developed by Innominate Games and published by Games Operators, is a peculiar blend of parody, strategy, and internet culture that aims to deliver a humorous twist on the traditional turn-based tactics formula. Inspired heavily by the long-running "Polandball" internet comic style, the game places players in command of various anthropomorphized country representations, each drawn as a ball with stereotypical traits, accents, and personalities. What initially seems like a meme-fueled gimmick quickly reveals itself to be a surprisingly competent strategy game, albeit one that leans heavily on its novelty for charm rather than mechanical innovation. The game’s structure is reminiscent of classic titles like Heroes of Might and Magic, offering players a strategic map to explore, resources to gather, cities to develop, and heroes to recruit. From the outset, players are thrown into absurd and often hilarious scenarios involving global superpowers like the US, Russia, Germany, China, the UK, and Poland, each represented by their own "Countryball" factions with unique units, special abilities, and comically exaggerated traits. Campaign missions often parody real-world events or popular internet jokes, delivering them through a filter of satire and stereotype that ranges from clever to outright silly. While the humor won’t be for everyone—especially those unfamiliar with the Polandball meme universe—it provides a distinct identity that few games in the genre possess. On the battlefield, CountryBalls Heroes relies on turn-based combat set on grid-based maps. Each unit, from low-tier foot soldiers to more specialized elite troops, has defined stats, movement range, and abilities. While not groundbreaking, the combat mechanics are solid and provide enough depth to keep engagements interesting. Heroes, the central figures of each army, add a layer of strategy with their own skills and powers, many of which are humorous riffs on national clichés or internet memes. These abilities, like “Build the Wall” or “Brexit,” are both amusing and surprisingly effective in shaping battlefield outcomes. Despite the satirical tone, battles demand planning, as reckless decisions or poor positioning can quickly lead to disaster. Beyond combat, the game offers a well-developed overworld experience. Players can capture towns, upgrade structures, recruit new units, collect artifacts, and explore the map for hidden bonuses. The economic and city-building mechanics are functional, if not particularly innovative. They serve as a useful backbone to the tactical gameplay without overwhelming the player with micromanagement. There’s a decent sense of progression as you unlock better units and more powerful spells (or "memes," as they’re called), though some factions feel more fleshed out than others, and the late game can lean toward repetition as battles begin to follow familiar patterns. A standout feature of CountryBalls Heroes is the sheer number of units and heroes available. With over 90 unit types and dozens of hero characters, there's a lot to experiment with across different playthroughs. Each faction has its own aesthetic and playstyle, keeping things fresh, at least initially. Unfortunately, after extended sessions, the limitations of the underlying systems start to show. Unit balancing isn’t always tight, and AI opponents can either be frustratingly passive or randomly overpowered. Despite these flaws, the novelty of commanding a team of meme-infused national avatars is often enough to keep players engaged. Visually, the game has a charming, hand-drawn cartoon style that fits its comedic tone. The environments are colorful and clean, the characters expressive despite their simplistic design, and the interface, while a bit cluttered in places, is generally functional. Some quality-of-life features could use polish—particularly during large-scale battles or in the overworld map’s more crowded areas—but nothing that breaks the experience. The soundtrack is serviceable, offering light-hearted and sometimes regionally themed tracks that complement the game's tone without being particularly memorable. Performance-wise, the game runs smoothly on a wide range of systems thanks to its modest graphical demands. However, bugs and technical hiccups are not uncommon. Players have reported issues ranging from graphical glitches to occasional crashes and wonky pathfinding during battles. The developers have issued updates, but some problems persist. Additionally, translation quality and localization vary, leading to some awkward phrasing or inconsistent humor delivery in different language settings. Despite these shortcomings, CountryBalls Heroes is ultimately a surprisingly enjoyable experience for those who appreciate irreverent humor mixed with classic turn-based strategy gameplay. It doesn’t aim to revolutionize the genre, nor does it deliver the mechanical depth of more serious strategy titles. Instead, it focuses on charm, absurdity, and a deep affection for internet meme culture. For players who enter with the right expectations—looking for light-hearted fun rather than hardcore tactical depth—it delivers a satisfying and often hilarious romp through geopolitics, one poorly translated joke at a time. It may not appeal to everyone, particularly those unfamiliar with or uninterested in the source material, but CountryBalls Heroes carves out a niche for itself in a crowded genre by refusing to take itself seriously. For fans of games like Heroes of Might and Magic, Disciples, or even Worms—and for anyone who’s laughed at a Polandball comic on Reddit—it offers enough laughs, strategy, and content to justify a closer look. This game is a delightful mix of strategy, humour, and lighthearted fun that keeps me coming back. The concept of playing as a country ball is unique and entertaining, and the design is simple yet charming. The game is bright, colourful, and has personality. The animations are smooth. All and all a good game and worth buying despite there being a lack of updates. A solid 7.2/10
