It's no Chrono Trigger, and it's rough in some areas, but it's undoubtedly a fun game. Tldr: If your standard heavy-duty RPG is a full-course meal, then this game is a bag of fries. Sure, if you're expecting the complete dish, then it seems disappointing, but if you take it for what it is, it succeeds at its vision beautifully. THE GOOD: + It has that nostalgic feel of when you would buy an unknown Gameboy Advance RPG from a bargain bin/used game area and it would turn out to be better than expected. + Clever combat that incentivizes finding opportune moments instead of just loading up your best moves + The characters are simple, and have little depth, but they are also charming, and most importantly, are NOT obnoxious (at least to me) + A good amount of character variety, and I was happy to see that they come in different flavors and don't play the same. + It has some legitimately good scenes that you can enjoy, unless you are a cynic. + Some really unique ideas that fit really well with the setting + The art style is beautiful and reminiscent of old GBA/SNES titles + I was surprised by the soundtrack. It's legitimately excellent, especially the original song by none other than the Sunflower from PvZ. + It provides a good challenge, especially with the superbosses. It's not a cakewalk where clicking one attack clears the game. + No random encounters, and instead it uses a clever "mini-boss" dungeon. You'll see what I mean. THE BAD: - Your party really can't follow you (unless you set your default movement to "run" in the settings), which leads to them awkwardly stumbling around the map. I can't defend that one, it looks pretty bad. - Some story scenes are legitimately cringy and had me rolling my eyes. Thankfully, they're not common - Outside of its clever combat, the game itself is very simple, and will turn-off some of the more dedicated RPG players or those with high expectations. - While charming, the story is really nothing too special. SUMMARY: I may not be on the same level as a legendary RPG enjoyer, like Deviant, but I thought this one was fun. If you're very critical of RPGs and/or get disappointed quickly, CSH is probably not for you. However, if you want something more nostalgic, and reminiscent of old titles, then give CSH a shot. Honestly, the way some reviews tore into this one, I thought it would've been awful. But Nope, it was really fun, albeit flawed and crude. 7.5/10
I’ll be honest, I was definitely underestimating this game before I started playing it. The gameplay is amazing, especially on the hardest difficulty. Every fight against the enemies feels challenging and interesting, and the battle system is really well designed. I also really enjoyed the unit design and how each unit feels unique and useful in its own way. I had a really great time playing this game and enjoyed it much more than I expected. Definitely a pleasant surprise!
I'm not sure what others aren't seeing in this game, but I personally love Cosmic Star Heroine. The aliens are cool ideas and the human characters are relatively interesting. Don't get me wrong, there's story elements I would change, but there's dozens of hours of gameplay here. Exploration, combat, side quests, hidden treasures, and even Easter-eggs from their previous games are in abundance. The combat system is fun, the music is great, and the game is really pretty. Plus, even if you're worried it's not worth $15, these games are often on sale so just give it some time and try it out!
