March 2025
Overview: Coridden is a hack n' slash featuring semi-open levels all connected to one another. The main feature of the game is the ability to shift seamlessly between your human and beast form with additional options available as you progress through the game and defeat more enemies. Finishing the main game including all side quests took me around 15 hours on Veteran difficulty, although a couple more hours of fun can be had playing repeatable missions from the main hub. I played most of the game alone since searching for open sessions using the game's built in multiplayer function didn't produce any results. I am unsure about why I could never find other players to join, it might have been a bug or simply not many people playing the game at the time. + The positives: The combat is fast paced and offers great variety in terms of playstyles and possible builds. It's easy to pick up and the game helps you along by highlighting enemies who are about to attack you. The special effects look flashy and gorgeous while still managing to keep your screen clean and enemy attacks easy to read. Talent trees are plentiful and offer a plethora of choices for both your human as well as animal forms. In combination with the opportunity to respec your character at any point in the game I never ran out of options to try out. Having multiple forms and variants within those forms to shift into makes for a healthy mix of different experiences, making sure you will never get bored throughout your playthrough. Chances are you might beat the game before even unlocking the final rows in your talent trees. The world is packed full with little areas to explore and wandering off the beaten path will almost always lead to a reward of some kind. Speaking of rewards, all secret treasures in the game are obtainable in singleplayer with the right build. Reaching certain areas require you to jump off the back of a mount – when playing in multiplayer this would be your fellow player. However, the game offers multiple summoning skills effectively conjuring an NPC beast companion functioning in a similar fashion, making jumps that normally require another person achievable even when playing alone. The main story is engaging, albeit a bit slow to get going and a tad tropey at times. The game actively encourages exploration to find log files hidden throughout the world to uncover the mysteries of the post-apocalyptic world you find yourself in. Finding these files always felt rewarding as you slowly piece together what happened in these forsaken lands. The environments are distinct, each with their own soundtrack, and offer breathtaking views at times. The art style is unique, blending traditional environments with futuristic aspects like bio-luminescent foliage or highly technological wreckage. The team has been great so far in addressing player feedback and potential concerns, so more bug fixes and adjustments are to be expected in the future. - The negatives: At the time of me writing this review the game still suffers from numerous bugs like achievements not being awarded despite meeting the requirements, defense objectives or enemies not spawning correctly, bosses falling off the map thereby preventing you from acquiring their loot and stacked items getting partially lost when transferring them between your storage and your inventory. Enemies tend to lack variety and the same handful of enemy types are being reused over the entirety of the game with the majority of them being already encountered within the first open zones of the game. Different species do come in variants, however most of them boil down to the same couple mechanics you have been seeing for the majority of the game already. This is specifically noticeable in the middle part of the game where barely any new variants are being introduced. It gets better towards the end again but in between it can get repetitive. The difficulty of enemies in the world varied greatly depending on the respective zone, but seemed to follow no tangible system at times. The main quest will send you to one zone where you would encounter a significant difficulty spike, only for the following quest step to send you to the next zone featuring much lower enemy levels than the one you had previously been to. This can however be fixed by simply adjusting the game’s difficulty from the main menu any time you run into one of these cases. You acquire most new shapeshift forms, weapons and attacks for your animal form by defeating enemies. The concept is good, however some of the drop rates seem a bit skewed as of now, leading to some of the weapon types being extremely hard to come by. For example: I finished the game at level 34 and up until level 30 I didn't even know certain weapons types existed since I never got any dropped. Half the game I was stuck using the same ranged attack due to the lack of alternatives and only in the final 2-3 hours of the main game I was suddenly bombarded with more new options to try out than I effectively needed. Maybe I just got unlucky with the drop rates, but this was my experience. Maybe in the future we will be able to purchase animal weaponry or beast forms from vendors as bad luck protection, but as of now RNG is your worst enemy. The camera in Coridden used to be entirely fixed and could not be manually adjusted or controlled at all. This aspect has luckily since been adressed by the devs, introducing the option to manually rotate the camera if desired, decreasing the occasions when you end up fighting the camera more than actual enemies. The zoom functionality is however still pretty limited and oftentimes enemies can see you way before you can see them, leading to them attacking you from outside your field of view. I oftentimes felt the desire to zoom further out with the camera to get a better look at what’s going on. Getting hit out of nowhere by a projectile coming from off screen can be annoying at times, especially when fighting stronger enemies that can dish out significant damage in a single strike. Some of the controls feel a bit archaic and clunky on mouse and keyboard, specifically when traversing the map. Especially jumping at a diagonal angle can feel very frustrating at times. It works flawlessly on controller, but when playing with M&K more often than not the game locks you to one of your primary axes when jumping despite you pressing two keys simultaneously. With the latest patch as of writing this review this can be alleviated by simply turning the camera. This may however lead to the player quickly losing orientation since the minimap turns alongside the camera and cannot be fixated. Especially in unexplored regions I have found myself running in circles a couple times without noticing since I had to frequently turn the camera in order to time required jumps with M&K. To its credit through, the game does present you with a popup message when launching for the first time that the game is best enjoyed with a controller. Verdict: Coridden is a charming indie game with a unique take on an exiting formula that isn’t afraid to try new things. Despite its flaws I had a lot of fun playing the game, even alone, although I can certainly confirm the game is more fun with friends.

An enjoyable Co-op game of a type many of us would like to see more of. The game was designed with Co-op in mind as opposed to it being an afterthought, so the ability to ride on, or be ridden by, your companions is a great addition to the more traditional cooperative abilities such as healing, shielding, and buffing. I would like to see more games involving playable creatures with a cooperative experience as a core feature and I hope to see continued updates for Coridden.

Coridden, an ode to beloved old school ARPGs and puzzle platformers with the spice of shapeshifting. If Diablo 2, Trine, and Animorphs were at a party, this game would be the aftermath. Overall a very fun game to play with another person, or 3 others. Excited for more updates and contents, and another great addition to coop games. +PROS: + A good casual ARPG entry, it's not easy, but not too difficult either. Not nearly as grindy as some other competitors. + Custom class maker with respecs available at the main town. Separate world and character saves. + Alternant system is reminiscent of Diablo 2's + Elder Scrolls' rune systems. Makes making any/most gear useable once forging is unlocked. + Creature subspecies adds on another variety to equipment and build synergies. + Puzzles and platforming aren't too difficult and can be solved solo in addition to coop. + Plenty of accessibility options + controller support. Devs are also very active on Discord to assist. -CONS: -No preview option for gear + hiding armor options. - Lack of camera control can lead to some awkward viewpoints and you can get stuck or lost due to said awkward angles. - Some may feel there's not enough creatures, with the current total only being 7. This may be subject to change in possible future updates. - Since the world save is independent only on the host's end , other players need to progress their own world to gain access to features and shops that are locked when not playing that host's save, even if they're using the same character save . -No personal customization if you're looking for that. There is some limited customization through gear, and no transmog option (at this time).

After two hours with Coridden and defeating the first boss I must say - I am impressed. The fact that a game with such a small dev team includes VISIBLE GEAR on our character, elaborate weapon and beast attack animations, different builds - it tells me that great care and love was put into the game. But let's try and put my experience so far into something digestable and easy to read: PROS: - Great graphics (especially for fans of neon-forests :D ) - Nice soundtrack - Many different character build options - WORKING COOP (which cannot be said for some AAA titles on launch...) - Fast paced, demanding combat - you'll be rolling, shooting, smacking, spellcasting and transforming all the time - LOOT - plenty of gear that changes your look as well (I need to add, that gear stats on equipment screen are some of the best presented stats I've seen in action rpg's - I want every game to tell me the exact speed of projectiles, and delay between them) CONS: - I have encountered occassional stuttering during some travel moments (but it can be my rig) - Introduction to the story and the world can be confusing at the start, as players are thrust into it without that much background - This game is clearly designed to be played with controller. I generally prefer playing with it, so it's not a problem for me, but if you don't have one expect a bit trickier controls

The game has a great combat system, and you can transform into the beasts you defeat! Combat feels great both in human form (where you not only develop your character with new skills and gear) and in beast form (where you gain unique abilities). The best part is that you can instantly switch between these forms, making battles against monsters even more fun and dynamic :> Oh... and most importantly, there are animals in the city that you can pet!! <3
