Aug. 2025
This game recently went coop, and my wife said to me, "Hey, let's play this." Now, I love this woman dearly, I'd do anything for her. I'd throw myself into a woodchipper for this woman. I spend my days being the manliest man alive, speaking only in grunts and flexed biceps and my only emotion is vexation. And you know what? I had a great time with this game on its own terms. You ever played Stardew Valley? If you haven't, just skip down a paragraph or so, this won't mean much. If you have, though, this game is so exactly Stardew Valley that if I tried to tell how exactly it is, this review would be really, pointlessly long. Instead, there's some differences: it feels a little more like a real place, with a southeast Asian sort of vibe. Obviously, 3D art assets, polygons instead of pixels. The characters are more... generally credible, represent a far wider range of human personalities. There's also some "diving" but it's really scooting around on a different map with a different costume on. Oh yeah, and instead of Jojo Mart it's an oil drilling company called Pufferfish, and they seem more longterm-schemingly evil than just offbrand Walmart. Now, if you don't know what Stardew Valley is, I'll try to make it brief: You have the only farm in an isolated community, and the farm is greatly rundown. Starting with very poor tools, you steadily reclaim the farmland, farming crops to earn a profit, and any spare time you have is spent in side activities, such as mining or fishing, or roaming about the village where the rest of the NPCs live and chatting them up. In time, you might court one. Advancing the game's plot requires engaging with the various distractions (like mining, the museum, etc.) and the progress of the game is pretty slow. Meaningful actions cost energy, so you have a finite number of actions to do in a day and a limited number of hours as well, so budgeting your energy is the "challenge", and I use that term quite loosely. Since the game has seasons, and your chief moneymaker is farming, scheduling quality farm time each day is really the main goal if you want your character to stop being be a pauper. Playing it cooperatively means the ol' divide-and-conquer approach works. My wife likes the farming part, so I tend to leave that to her. Meanwhile, I tend to spend a fair bit of time "sanitizing" the mines, which also involves smashing monsters and rocks in equal measure, and I get to let off a bicep flex or a manly grunt in the process. The combat in the game is not at all difficult nor remotely challenging; you can take quite a lot of hits and a night's rest heals all your wounds, so gamers looking for a combat challenge won't find it here. Really, the monsters are a minor inconvenience between you and some quality ore. The chief goal of the mining is to get metals, which can be used to upgrade tools, which largely means the farm can be made to run more efficiently. Kind of a win/win, even by not farming, you can help the farm. Really, the game is one of those "cozy" things you've heard so much about of late. Nothing is really a threat. You can build up and decorate your house, adopt a cat, woo one the villagers (or your coop partner), have kids, raise a family, develop an orchard or ranch or your own wines... or all of that at the same time. The villagers are all generally affable, and even the few stern ones can be won over easily enough. I was indirectly asked if you could play this as a vegan. Now, I suppose technically you could, but it would be really difficult. The museum requires fish and bugs to display, a... second collector (let's just leave it at that) also requires this and more, so if your moral code prevents you from playing a fishing minigame or netting bugs, you could hope to randomly find them under rocks in the mine or in trash bins, but... well, it would be agonizingly slow progress. Or you could turn a blind eye to the depredations of your coop partner, supposing you find one that doesn't mind doing all that. That said, you don't even have to eat at all, let alone meat products, so if that matters the game definitely has you covered. A breatharian lifestyle is actually viable. So, to kind of wrap up this ramble, I, macho as I am, have had a perfectly fine time. Playing it with my wife makes it much more enjoyable, as I'm not completely sure I'd want to run the farm myself. But it's kind of fun helping her make this thing take shape, seeing it get better, and the community around us start to get a bit of a glowup as a result of her efforts. There's a few bugs here and there, but I have confidence (judging by developer posts) that they'll be dealt with in the fullness of time. If you made it down here, you're my kind of people, you really are. I do some streaming from time to time, that's at http://www.twitch.tv/fdejeuner. I'm notoriously chatty, so you can say hi if you want. There's a link to that, and my curator group, on my profile.

Ok,,,Long story short, go and buy this game, its worth the full asking price and its a fantastic pretty looking chill game. A bit more detail: First lets go there, yes, lots of similarities to SDV, calling it 3D SDV is fairly accurate, but this DOES do a LOT more different things than SDV. If you like SDV you will like this. Buy it. Basics: You start by getting and running a farm, the farm is large. You can, Farm. Forage, Fish (This is the first game I have played where I actually like the fishing minigame). Mine, Raise animals, Cook, Collect bugs, build and decorate your farm as you would expect in a variety of ways. There is an underwater world which is also fairly large which you will eventually get to, no spoilers so I will say no more. There are LOTS of NPCS and they all have different characters, life styles, day to day cycles that mean you always see people milling around as well as lots of animals so the town doesn't feel empty, it feels lived in and is fun to explore. There are seasons and festivals. Difficulty: There are ingame options to up to double the amount time a day lasts which is the main difficulty toggle as this is essentially a time management game. It has light combat aspects which also can be toggled off by setting mobs to non hostile but tbh the combat inst really much of a challenge right from the start. Game world: Large and pretty, fast travel unlocks reasonably easy and quickly and you have essentially two big areas to eventually explore, again no spoilers. Grind: This is hard to say, as it depends on your experience in these kind of games, I would say its mid grind but as there is a lot of content, you aren't only always grinding one thing There is still lots of things I haven't unlocked yet, I have finished year one. Bugs/Stability: I have encountered one constant bug where in the under sea world, you should be able to see where you are on the map but it often doesn't work. No other bugs encountered. I play on highest settings with zero issues (Relatively mid range PC. specs are on my profile). This is a little gem, the steam forums are quiet so I guess word is not getting around about just how good this game really is, I love it and I want it to grow so I think it deserves an absolutely positive review. BUT IT NOW

Played for 250 hours and completed pretty much everything in the 1.1 update. I'll go over some topics I think it’s important and worth talking about (and that i don't see many people talking) + Not mentioning the word ''stardew valley'' for an ENTIRE review challenge. Long Story Short: This is a very nice game, with innovative and fresh features in the genre, the world feels alive and the nature and tropical atmosphere + charismatic and lovely NPCs really builds up a heartwarming game. You can tell it was made with passion, creativity and by people who actually cared. However, nothing is perfect and there are quite a few things and problems you need to consider, the worst of it all (at least for me) was the massive grind and boring gameplay loop, and even tho in the short term you feel like you are progressing in everything you do, the game fails in awarding you for all the trouble and massive hours of grind. Gameplay Loop & Progression: Activities just like any other farming sim games, but here we have Ocean Diving, where you help to restore and clear trash from the ocean while exploring an underwater world with ocean creatures and some very nicely put mermaid and ocean folklore. It’s very good in the first few hours, but it ends up being quite repetitive at a late point. You get stuck in a ‘mining or diving’ dilemma most of your days in the game , making it very grindy and repetitive as these are essential tasks for the main story progression and takes very, very long to ''complete''. Progression also feels very slow, completing the bundles, story, and maxing out skills takes a very long time, wouldn’t be a problem if the rewards weren’t so poor, unsatisfying, and even ‘’outdated’’ at the point of the game you’ll finally complete them . Getting gold is a bit hard and at the endgame when you are finally swimming in it, there won’t be much to spend on. Not to mention the amount of bundles you gotta complete that takes forever and when you finally do, you’ll unlock even more bundles to complete. 😭 The objectives in general feel somewhat very ‘linear’, I truly wished things were more ‘laid back’, unpredictable and chill. Social & Romance part: Characters are one high point of this game, a very diverse cast and it makes the game feel truly alive, every single one has a distinct personality and if you are a person who likes to hear what they have to say, you’ll like it a lot! They might have ‘’simple’’, but quite meaningful dialogues , some storylines are very good and well written, very easy and accessible to relate in many states of life. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3276741886 The bad thing is: there are TOO MANY of them and it takes a long time to progress in the friendship. If you decide to speak to everyone around the town, you'll lose more than half of a day doing it for sure. And of course, you won’t be interested in every single NPC, but it takes SO LONG for any kind of progression, it adds a lot of the feeling of ‘’massive’’ into the game. The romance/dating is also a bit dull, with cute cutscenes and dating events, but they won’t say anything different to you in the everyday life or anything, it’s like it’s not happening at all. Feels incomplete. Now some stuff I want to mention very quickly: ✿ Character customization is VERY CUTE and there's a huge variety of cosmetics and clothing items. ✿ Farm customization and house decoration can be a little bit clunky in the square grid (the house has a terrible design) but you can turn out to make very nice inspired decor with tons of different sets, needs some minor improvements and polishing tho! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3309220197 ✿ Festivals are very unique and original, and it has actual fun minigames and cutscenes, just wished the rewards were a little better. ✿ Huge shoutout to the numerous easter eggs, from a BMO and Sponge Bob inspo decorations, to programs in the in game TV referring real shows and movies like Game of Thrones, Masterchef and even Kpop survival reality shows (Produce 101, we love you!) ✿ The main story was very predictable and a bit disappointing, the game is very original and ambitious and I ended up expecting something new and original for the closing of the story too. Looking forward to new updates, hopefully, it’ll redeem itself in the future. ✿ Few acid humor and double meaning dialogues here, had moments asking myself howtf was it even possible, they really got me. ''Groo got stoned and slept'' but he actually got stoned, became a stone for real lol https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3301368072 Conclusion: This review sounds a little too negative and harsh, but I just wanted to highlight some points I don’t see people talking about and in my opinion, are somewhat important. I loved playing this game, felt massive most of the time, but ended up appreciating a lot of the little details of it. Truly wished it were more of a 'laid back' chill and cozy game, even tho there shouldn't be pressure to complete or anything, I felt a bit of it. More updates will arrive in the future, and hopefully, they will fix and improve some quality-of-life aspects needed for a better-polished game in general.

This is the best farming sim I have ever played (and I've played a lot of them)! Lots of reviews say its like Stardew valley and I agree that yes the base of the game is like Stardew but Coral Island goes so much further! There is so much to do and all of it stays interesting and rewarding. I love the art style and there's so many characters to meet and get to know. There's so many features that make the game so much more enjoyable like 'fast travel' to get around easier and even in the settings you can slow down the time in the game. You can also turn off monsters attacking you if the mines feel overwhelming. It also pauses the time when you decorate your house which is a must. I initially thought I wouldn't be interested in diving very much but it is actually my favorite activity. Festivals are so much fun with unique and enjoyable mini games. There's more animal and crop options and lots of things to upgrade. You can take things at your own pace and focus on what ever goals you want to. I love that this game includes increasing the town rank and making offerings to the Goddess. Both are the right amount of challenging and rewarding. There is a lot to explore. I really can't come up with a complaint about this game and I highly recommend it!
