This is an AWESOME Contra game. Basically Contra 1, Contra 3, Contra Hard Corps Reboot, Remix and Remake all-in-one, with a whatever-story and the inclusion of a bunch of characters and throwbacks to all of these. It's definitely still its own thing though, not a copy-paste job. But instead of being about 30 minutes long, its about 3-6 hours on a first playthrough and 1-1.5 hours on repeat playthroughs with upgrades from the Perk Shop. Positives: +Infinitely replayable +Can stop after any stage and continue from the beginning of any stage, both in Story and Arcade Mode. +The Konami Code works and unlocks a high cost but purchaseable 30 lives perk in the Perk Shop. +Unlockable remixed soundtracks for Arcade mode. A nice bonus. +There are 5 difficulties (2 unlockable for finishing the game on Hard), and the hardest doesn't allow for perks, so if you want bragging rights, you're covered. Now let's talk about the negatives. Unfortunately they're pretty obnoxious: Negatives: -No online coop: Ridiculous! I'm giving it a pass because Remote Play Together works pretty well when set to Performance, but come on Konami, get with the program! -Stage 6 has 3 really bullcrap sections. You have to navigate your reflection in crystals; it's really confusing! You will burn lives initially, or be forced to practice this stage many times to understand it. Terrible design, but thankfully the ONLY design issue in the whole game, and they're all only about 15 seconds each. -Earning Credits for Perks takes FOREVER. Thankfully if you setup two or more controllers and just die repeatedly in the first stage in Arcade Mode on Hard with 1-Hit Death as soon as possible, and choose to continue over and over again, the credits you get, are given a stacked multiplier. So what would take hundreds of playthroughs to earn all the perks might take you an hour or two. The point of perks is to make a game easier, not make it so grindy that only a really good player will earn them who doesn't need them anymore. Thankfully this trick fixes that in a massive way . Conclusion: Incredible Contra game. Not including online coop is a major misstep, but sidestepped with local coop or Remote Play Together, assuming you and your friend have good internet. The other two negatives are dealt with with practice and a trick respectively. I don't know if I'd have gotten it at $40, but I got it for $20 on sale, and having a blast. It's really fun!

I love this game, it reminds me of happy moments when I was young. However, it does have some flaw settings, more like a bug I think. If you die near the deadly green water (or liquid) in the final stage, you will be reset to a location "deep in the water". Because the green water is rising fast in order to catch the player, the reset location just cannot provide sufficient time to get out of water before invincible time is out. Then it took another life for this stupid reason, then repeats like 4 or 5 times...until it resets to a location where water stop rising. Very stupid setting. and do'nt know how engineers could make such a mistake...

Great fusion of new and old. Classic game play with modern graphics and some welcome QOL upgrades. Coop is top notch. A great way to introduce friends to the series.

What a pleasant surprise! Glad WayForward got to handle this one. It goes back to what made Contra on the NES so great, fast and frenetic 2D side-scrolling action. Would absolutely recommend, especially if you like the NES classics.

Who would have thought, an actually decent Contra game. As good as this is, this is honestly still really jank, not particularly pleasing to look at or even very long. I'd suggest waiting for a discount if you're the mood for some Contra and then having a few hours of fun.
