Great remake, but too expensive for quite small amount of gameplay

I've been a Contra fan since I got the NES version as a kid, it brings back so much fond memories of staying up late playing with my brother. Operation Galuga has so many quality of life aspects that have made this game a blast, such as a health bar that you can increase, no more cheap 1 hit deaths. Plus now I can play with my brother online and relive the old days. This game has potential for a bunch of DLC, I'd love to get to play as the Cyborg Wolfman, Brad Fang once again, and in levels inspired from many of the sequels over the years. Highly Recommended.

$40 is too much, but on a good sale it's a must-play for anyone who played the originals as a kid. Heck, it's a decent play for anybody new to Contra, but just be aware this game trades heavily in nostalgia, so you will be missing that part of it if you're new. Couch co-op is a huge plus, and it's very forgiving with what controller(s) you use. You will NEED a friend next to you to enjoy this game to the fullest. It's fine solo, but once again, you'll be missing a part. The Normal difficulty seems well-balanced for two players who are generally at least decent at games. Expect 90 to 120min for a story play-through, making this approachable as a have-a-friend-over sort of afternoon. Unlockables, arcade/challenge modes, etc gives some replayability, and the story hints at piles of DLC on the way - of course, I guess we'll see about that. Graphics are great and it runs smooth on low to mid-tier systems, but it's definitely more than a bit "diarrhea Christmas lights." It's not truly a bullet hell style game, but the screen gets pretty busy. Sound design is solid, and the remixed music is decent and familiar. Voice acting is way better than it deserves to be, and adds to the classic campy vibe. An unexpected and pleasant surprise. Again, get it on sale, and play with a friend.

Wayforward knows what they're doing because they already made Contra 4. Contra: Operation Galuga on the surface might look like a simple cash in on Contra 1 nostalgia. but mechanically there is quite a bit of new things added to the series. First off character selection there are 10 characters who all vary in degree, Bill and Lance, have the most standard playstyle they have double jumps and Dashing/Air Dashing, but even between the two you can get a character specific perk. Bill's allows him to be in invulnerable durring a Dash, and Lance gets a Higher Double jump. Then you have a character like Stanley Ironside who's playstyle is entirely different, He can't Double Jump or Dash, but he has the Contra 4 Grapple hook to elevate himself higher quickly, and he can Hover. The Probotector Robots have the potential for all 4 movement options since they get double Jump and Dash, and with their two character perks giving them access to the Grapple Hook, and Hover, you only get two perk slots. so those movement options will be at the cost of something else that can give you more fire power, or survivability. Different characters may also very in what weapons they get. The Perk system is there if you want a bit of an edge in gameplay, there are cheaper perks like Start a level with your weapon of choice, or more expensive perks like keeping a weapon after dying, or increasing the amount of hit points you get, or healing a hit point when you overload a weapon (useless if you play with one hit deaths of course) When it comes to weapons the Lv2 upgrades by collecting the same one twice makes a return from Contra 4 and the new feature is Overloading. you can use a weapon (or just it's Lv2 upgrade if you are on an easier difficulty) in exchange for a powerful move. For example Laser lets you slow down the world around you, and you'll be free to deal a big chunk of damage to a boss. Flame gives you a very long lasting Flame wall that stops projectiles, Machine gun gives you invulnerably for a decent amount of time. You can also call in a bonus weapon pod if you fill up the meter. So every weapon drop you see is the opportunity for an overload. The levels enemies and bosses are a re-imagining of Contra 1, it'll be familiar but there is always a twist to keep things fresh, for example the Snow level now take place on a speeding Train moving though the snow top mountains, and the Robot boss is more elaborate, half way though it turns into a homage to a Contra Hard corps boss. This is a Solid Contra game, and it's very much worth playing.

I think they mostly hit the sweet spot here--it has a high pick up and play factor, controls are easy to grasp and responsive (wisely, they don't over-egg the pudding), it looks great without calling too much attention to itself or making the action too chaotic to follow, and there's plenty of call-backs for us old fogeys who's been playing Contra for (grumble grumble) years and anti-frustration features for those of us who might have lost a step since our prime. It's just a notch below HARD CORPS: UPRISING in terms of being an ideal "start it up and blast things" kinda game, but I am enjoying it a lot.
