I used to absolutely love this game, and honestly, it's still good, but unfortunately the updates haven't improved it—they've mostly made it worse. For example, in the past you could only hear zombies when they were actually very close to you. Now you can often hear them constantly even when there aren't any nearby. In my opinion, this change is especially annoying. I know it's probably meant to make the atmosphere more immersive, but it just ends up being distracting. Then there's the map difficulty, which is all over the place. Some maps are easy enough to complete solo, while others are nearly impossible even with three friends. It would be great if the difficulty settings actually made a difference, because not everyone wants to struggle through every single game. Sometimes you just want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Another frustrating thing is that on some maps, near the end, zombies start spawning endlessly. That can make the game practically unplayable. Thankfully, not every map is designed like that. Personally, instead of the campaign mode, I would have preferred more traditional escape-style maps, but that's just my opinion. Overall, this still isn't a bad game, but it used to be much better. It had so much potential, and I feel like the developers didn't build on its strengths to make it even better. Instead, many of the changes have made the experience worse, which is disappointing. At this point, No More Room in Hell has become a much better alternative—and it's even free on Steam. I really hope the developers can turn this game around in the future, because it genuinely deserves to be great.

In short, this is what No More Room In Hell 2 SHOULD HAVE BEEN, but it has it's own shortcomings. My most dislike is the Melee system, it's confusing and often times gets you killed, it definitely forces you take the time to learn how it works, No More Room in Hell's melee system felt better and more fleshed out, but in Contagion, often times, it forces you to ditch your melee soon as you find a firearm, and when you do get a firearm, the game gets noticeably more easier so long as you are decent at inventory management with your ammuntion. Otherwise? It's a good game, a bit on the dead side but it has it's fun, It's worth trying.

Despite being a zombie game, the most fun you can have is playing PvP with your friends. We used to play for hours. The game can be clunky at times, and there's nothing particularly memorable or unique about it, but the gunplay is enjoyable and all of the maps are good. Overall, the game is definitely worth it.

To avoid GAME CRASH set "Model / Texture detail" in "Options" - "Video" to "High" ("Medium" for 100% fix). Don't set "Shader detail" lower than "High" or you will not see Gore System. Don't play in "Full screen" mode because ALT-TABing and different software overlays and notifications will produce lags, visual glitches, game crash. Some Workshop items can make game start slow or not start, lag, crash.

Contagion is one of those zombie shooters that never blew up the way it deserved to, but still delivers a surprisingly tense and atmospheric co-op experience. If you’re tired of run-and-gun horde shooters and want something slower, more grounded, and more survival-focused, this game is a refreshing change of pace. The biggest strength here is the atmosphere. Maps feel lived-in and believable, zombies are actually dangerous, and the limited ammo forces you to think before firing. The “one bite can ruin your whole run” vibe adds real tension—especially with friends who definitely won’t panic and accidentally shoot you (they will). The Escape and Hunted modes are still the highlights. Escape is a fun blend of objective-driven co-op and on-the-fly problem-solving, while Hunted adds a competitive spin that keeps things unpredictable. The infection mechanic, where a bitten player slowly turns into a zombie mid-match, remains one of the coolest features in any zombie game. That said, the game isn’t perfect. Player counts are lower these days, and some features feel dated. Solo play is technically possible but not very fun—you really want a group or at least an active server to get the full experience. Animations and UI show their age too, though nothing game-breaking. Bottom line: If you have friends who love slow-burn survival horror or want a more tactical alternative to Left 4 Dead, Contagion is a hidden gem. It’s rough around the edges, but the tension, atmosphere, and unique infection mechanics make it worth diving into even in 2025.
