I like this game. I don't really know how to describe it, but the subtle humor and enticing retro style of this game are quite seductive. This is one of those little games where you can tell that the author has loved their own creation and are proud of it. It's like a Hotline Miami VR, which makes me very aroused. Great soundtrack too, sure, why not? I only wish that it was on the Oculus store so I didn't need my PC to run this simple game.

I waited until I had put a fair few hours into the game before I reviewed it. Now after 99 hours I feel I can review it well. Growing up in the 90s when this style was at its peak. This is a crazy throw back to that time. It feels like being in a game from the 90s, the clips cannot do it justice! It is way better! I can play it for hours and hours and still want more......damn work getting in the way. The art style is so retro it looks like something I should know already. Buy it! Like it! play it! Love it! Thank me later (I won't know because I'll be too busy playing Compound) If there was a higher choice than yes to recommend I'd choose that!

Compound is a surprisingly good VR shooter that has intuitive controls, a cohesive art style, and audio that fits the aesthetic. The whole package comes together to feel like a genuine NES game dropped right into VR that, unlike most VR games, gives you $20 worth of gameplay. This is one of those rare games that successfully escapes Early Access and doesn't feel like a patchwork job. Worth playing (if you have a VR headset) with an asterisk because of some problems with the arsenal. Like most FPS games I've played recently, there's something off with most of the weapons in the game. Oddly enough, the starting weapons are some of the best weapons in the game: the starting shotgun has good spread, good damage per pellet, high pellet count, and reloads quickly. Meanwhile the bouncing shotgun has half the projectile speed, about half of the pellet count, takes longer to reload, and has friendly fire on the bounce. The starting SMG fits into a similar spot because of the high DPS but wide spray of it; excellent at close range but useless at range (as expected). The other two starting weapons are questionable but they provide some decent variety and access to more ammo pools. Unfortunately, all of the explosive weapons feel bad to use: the starting grenade launcher's arc is unexpectedly short, the rocket launcher's AoE is actually smaller than the GL's, and the sticky launcher's AoE is so small you have to land direct hits with it or set traps. The explosive weapons all have bad hitboxes too, with red explosive barrels bizarrely being more reliable explosive damage than any of your weapons. I think the issue is either the hitboxes being smaller than the explosions or the hitboxes projecting from the billboard particles, causing them to emit damage from your cone of view. Explosions honestly feel "2D"; I'd frequently land a rocket two feet behind an enemy and it visibly did no damage. No matter what the issue is, they are really unreliable and not fun to use. There's also three starting pistols with infinite ammo (emergency guns around the levels) but the two you unlock feel terrible to use. The burst pistol is so short range that you can't hit the second target at the range with it, making it effectively a melee weapon, and the laser pistol has a three second recharge time for one round if you deplete the three shot magazine. Being a VR game there's of course an obligatory Compound bow too but shooting arrows at mechs and armored machine gunners is purely a gimmick. This is a good game but with some tweaks it could be a great game. Compound is one of those rare VR games that you'll get your money's worth out of and feels like a real video game. There's plenty of variety to runs with good level randomization plus mutators and difficulty settings to tweak almost everything to your liking. This is something that'll stand the test of time because of the effort put into the presentation; this looks, feels, and plays like a retro game that just happened to release in 2022. An easy recommendation for your VR library, just beware of some weapon wonkiness.

Solid gun feel, lovely art style, different modes that change it up [old school being the best] and addicting game loops. Honestly would buy DLC or support the dev in whatever they do next. After 100%ing the game you'll get a chain gun which makes the game way too easy, but at that point I mean.. you deserve it.

This is one of the games that made me finally take the plunge into VR. I downloaded the demo, and was expecting to have to put the game aside until I got more experience in VR (got my "VR legs" so to speak) and was surprised to find out that wasn't the case (depends on each individual, though). I immediately bought the full game, and haven't regretted it. For some reason, it's one of the most immersive VR experiences I've had so far. Keep inmind that, as a new VR user, I have been sampling a bit of everything VR related. I'd say it comes down to how the game focuses on interactivity that compliments the gameplay, and cuts out all the fat. Reloading is tactile, but simplified, map layout is straightforward, visuals are clean and striking... And there are plenty of options to make the game accessible to different players. This being a solo development makes it even more impressive (well, not quite, music is by SPEEDBLACK) People compare this to DooM, but I kind of feel it is closer to a VR sibling of Strafe. In any case, highly recommended. Do try the demo if you are curious, unlike other demos that feel like beta versions with a lot of features missing, I feel this game's demo gives an accurate portrayal of what the game is about. If, like me, you find yourself starting the demo levels on easy, and looping them until you meet THE RAT, then this game might be for you. Note: I use a Pico 4 headset and controllers, which are not officially supported by the game, and they work perfectly.
