The one and original stealth tactics game. One of my all time favorites, ever since i got a 2 mission demo with pc gamer magazine when it released. Bit archaic by today's standards, but this will never get old for me. Must try for anyone into the current genre revival

This was my childhood game, although I cracked it back then. I didn’t dare to play it at the time, just sat and watched my dad play. Back then, I was like his biggest fan. Now I can afford to buy the full version of this game and confidently play it, but unfortunately, he’s no longer here to see it. I bought this game to play again and to keep some memories of my childhood. Dad, I miss you <3

I was a kid when this game came out and I found it way too difficult to quickly complete missions. It was during a time when I was fine with clicking instead of memorising hotkeys. Then Commandos 2 was released and because of its 3D graphics it was a blast! Swimming, rotating the screen, getting indoors?! Amazing! Of the trilogy the only one I left out was part number 3. I also enjoyed Desperados that came out a couple of years after Commandos . Controlling a special unit but now in spaghetti western style. What is Commandos about? It focuses on a special unit that is entrusted with completing dangerous missions during WW II. There are six soldiers specialised in various tasks and you control them in this tactical, stealth-based RTS that is played from an isometric perspective. Do you need to climb the wall? Pick the Green Beret for that. Do you need to cross a river to reach your mission objective? Pick the Marine and use his inflatable boat. Too many enemies patrolling an important area? Order your Spy to cause some distraction. Overall, we have 6 special soldiers to command (not all of them are provided for each mission). So why play this one now? Because a 4th episode titled Origins is currently in the works and it is set to be released this year. The developer is different since Pyro Studios has long become defunct. I was interested in finding out if this one worked under Win 11 since this is the only one out of the original 3 episodes that didn't get a remaster. How does such a game fare? It is certainly very interesting. In the options menu you can set the resolution, the A.I. of your soldiers and the volume. There are tutorial videos you can watch - they are pretty informative and while their resolution is very low they do the job they were meant to do. But to make things easier your best bet is to hit F1 when in-game to see all the hotkeys available (soldier-specific actions are explained separately). Scrolling the screen is relatively slow and there is no higher resolution than 1280x960 but at least this is widescreen. This is only just the basics - under the guide section on Steam there are many mods or fixes available for setting the resolution to a much higher value including 4K I think. There is also a mod adding additional missions to the game. I have not experienced any crashes but please note that I only completed the first two missions. Once a mission is finished we are given a rank - I do not know if the Steam version has the high rank requirement for us to be able to access the 20th (last) mission. Commandos was a blast back in 1998. I played part 2 a lot and I was saddened to hear the developer studio was no more. Until Origins is released feel free to pick up this one (or any of the sequels and their remasters).

This is the mother of real-time tactics and games such as Fallout Tactics , Desperados and Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood ; this is where it all began. I played this game first when I was a teenager. Back then, I was too bad to get beyond mission three. Now, twenty years later, I've finally succeeded! The game is set in the Second World War and tells the story of the legendary "Commandos" - a British special unit of highly specialised soldiers that were to secretly attack "behind enemy lines" to cause a maximum of damage with a minimum of effort. At the beginning of each of the twenty missions, the historic circumstances are explained and original pictures are shown. This game brings both: video-game history and world history! Your main task is to kill the hostile soldiers one by one while trying your best to remain unseen - and unheard. Your men's abilities give you several possibilities to do so. Quite often it's useful to combine their abilities - for instance by placing your trapper's trap in front of the Green Beret's decoy, or by distracting a group of soldiers with your spy so that another one of your men may enter a place unseen. Once you have cleared the place - or most of it -, you can easily fulfill the mission objective - usually to blow up something or to free some prisoners of war. Some hints that might be useful: [*]Quick-save the game very frequently by pressing Ctrl+S. [*]Confusingly, to load a quickly-saved game you have to press "NEW GAME" - and not "LOAD GAME". [*]Use hotkeys. [*]Hold Shift and click at an enemy soldier to see his field of view. [*]When crawling, your men will remain unseen until the middle of that field of view. [*]Always hide corpses so that they don't get detected by patrolling enemies. [*]Don't waste your explosives! You may need them to blow up a target in the end of a mission. [*]Use your sniper's ammo on the hardest enemies only - like on guards standing on plateaus - and make sure that no enemy can see the victim die when you shoot. [*]If a direct confrontation is inevitable (or if there just aren't many enemies left), hide your men behind a corner and point and shoot at approaching enemies even when the mouse symbol is still telling you that the target was out of range. Enemy soldiers are very stupid and will run right into death, and your handguns have infinite ammo and don't need to be reloaded.
