Colony has a small team with big dreams and great dedication. This game has received consistent updates from a 2 person team since I purchased. Each update has been a delight full of updated mechanics and sometimes new visuals. I find that Minecraft bores me after a while because I enjoy staying in base however with colony survival - staying in base is the point! Having to defend against enemies while also building a functional base that builds the things I need and want is a delightful yet laid back game experience that evokes the same feels as minecraft and a little bit of tower defense games. Plus the blocky graphics for the different jobs are delightfully cozy and cute! I really hope they keep with this aesthetic because I just love looking over at my blocky wheat fields! Kudos to this team - I really hope they can continue adding to this game for a long time, but if they don't - I've gotten far more hours out of this game than many other games with far more features!! Honestly just watching the colonists get out of bed each morning and get to work is fun and satisfying!! So THANK YOU developers - I wish you the best and I will continue to build my colonies!

It's got that sleepy-yet-exciting charm of those 2010's-era public minecraft servers we stayed up too late on. What begins as a motley crew of berry boys quickly devolves into an insane conglomeration of production lines and killboxes as your colony's economy grows ever-more complex. At least until your wanton mismanagement of the copper nails economy kills everyone everywhere. A labor of love by the devs that really is charming as hell.

If you like blocky building games you have to at least try Colony Survival. It is unique in that you can't really craft much, but you hire colonists to gather materials and do the majority of the crafting. It's a game about balancing production versus security because as your colony grows, so does the threat level from zombies, mostly at night. You spend alot of time managing your colony, but it's not a typical management type of game. You are in the colony and you decide what to build and where to place every block just like you would in minecraft. The game is very well done despite being made by a very small dev team. It's been in EA a long time and that might turn some people off, but they are still very active and updating the game fairly often. Almost every Friday the devs release a blog detailing what they are currently working on or want to do for the future of the game. I do have issue with the current progression. I get they want us to have to travel outside our colonies for some resources, but there isn't much in the way of different biomes in the game and the maps are fairly small compared to minecraft or creativerse. Having to find tin under the snow caps in mountains or having to find zinc under a mammoth tree is ok for single player, but try joining a popular multiplayer server and you will be buying tin and zinc in the marketplace because the places you can get tin or zinc are very limited, which in my opinion defeats the purpose of having us travel outside our colonies. It just feels forced and not a natural part of the progression. I would like to see tin and zinc put back in the iron layer so we could mine it underground in our own colonies. Or make it go even deeper, I don't care. If the game can't be played in full in a multiplayer server, then there is a flaw in the progression, IMHO. That said, I love the game. It is alot of fun to find a good spot on the map to build your colony and then figure out how to make it grow. The maps are very scenic. The latest update to the way the water looks is a huge step up. It looked terrible for so long. It is really nice now.

Overall, its a good survival management game. You as the players main job is to issue jobs, explore to setup bases and outposts, perform research ("press button to complete" is all you have to do once you have resources), manage whats priority to construct crafting materials wise, build nice houses or an underground giant room full of beds depending on if you prefer efficiency or building design. The NPCs don't have any needs bar their own bed and some food, they have no morale needs or comfort needs. Its a good game to get invested and focused into something at the start, but towards the end its really just about building things to keep you busy; I am in full knowledge the game is in "Early Access" but the game really does lack end game material and you are more or less entertaining yourself by the end. I'd wait on a sale to buy it. The devs do update the game with community desired features and also fix bugs well; eg we had a game breaking bug that only happened to the odd player, 1 out of 3 players in my world experienced it (as well as other players online) and the devs reverted the update within an hour and then fixed it a few hours or so. Positives: Updates are scarce but contain improvements and wanted content Multiplayer works well only in a PvE aspect There are a lot of jobs/roles for colonists to fill Unlocking new tech even on another run still feels rewarding NPCs can help with clearing large areas of blocks The graphics with the NPC models sit well together The UI isnt intrusive Building is simple and being near/in ur colony gives access to your whole stockpile which makes it very convenient to build to dig out somewhere I can shoot my friends with a gun Trading with other colonies in a constant trade or one off trade of an item In MP, you can have your friends take up different roles in their colony's eg player 1 focuses on crafting, player 2 does resource gathering, trade stuff and it work fine. Means theres no barriers (apart from tech tree) to have say a rifleman in a colony where we dont make rifles, the ammo or have the bench to "use it", we just can and it adds a lot of flexibility Negatives: As said, end game/ near the end is kinda stand around and watch zombies die or build PvP is possible but a colony vs colony not so much, the colonists dont seem to shoot players from what I've seen Biomes feel limited but the current ones are unique enough No weather system, can make the world feel a bit dead, could have seasons too to change how crops work making the game harder (winter, food storage, better yields in season X etc) The colonists have no morale or comfort needs, would add some difficulty Player upgrades are limited to HP, no tool usage or such Lack of Zombie variety, just HP increase (maybe add resistance to damage type X or Y, faster, slower etc) Players cannot see what another player is holding being block or weapon, they cannot hear a weapon from a player being fired
