Cold Fear knows that it's a 6/10 and relishes in the fact. This game is old and usually needs workarounds to play smoothly on modern hardware. I rawdogged it. Visual bugs aside,(pc port moment), Cold Fear looks absolutely stunning for a 2005 title. The Ship and "oil"rig look dingy, wet and worn down. Lighting is appropriately moody, the monstrous flashes of fork lightning over the ocean set the tone for the games setting beautifully and in general, the models and environments work well together to create a sense of unease, even if it does smell like the mid 2000s. Also, because of the time period it released in, it comes with all that older game clunk that you love to hate. No autosave means if you die right before the next save point, there's a chance you could be repeating a mission upwards of 5 times. Some missions just feel unfair, like having to get C4 near the end and getting jumped by a monster in a room full of explosives. I redid that mission so many damn times to the point I ended up cheesing it. The tank controls are awful, there are a few instances in which they're mandatory, but I spent most of the game holding down the aim button and using the decent ADS system. I got pretty damn mad at the amount of times I had to restart, all because Darkworks probably thought they were being funny. Audio is decent and the sound effects work well with the visuals to create a nice atmosphere almost throughout. The soundtrack is aggressively 2000s and whenever the guitar riffs with the hip-hop backing beat comes in, it weirdly fits for a game that was meant to be scary. The gunplay is fun enough, headshots are usually an instant kill so you are rewarded for good aim, and the enemies act in a way that keeps the combat feeling fresh. The enemy variety is pretty lacklustre so I'm glad that Darkworks carefully placed every combat scenario. It never ends up feeling stale; when you get jumped by zombie/human number 500, you don't care because each encounter feels new and thoughtfully placed. A common complaint I've seen is a lack of bossfights, and the final boss being way too difficult. While I agree with the first sentiment, I'm going to have to say that the final fight is pretty disappointing. The entire game is spent building up to the big bad and the boss ends up being a glorified quicktime event with no healthbar and limited attacks. It's pretty cheap and I kinda expected more. All in all, Cold Fear is a fine enough survival horror sorta game that rides on the coattails of Resident Evil 4. Surprisingly, considering how bad it sold, the game now has a large cult following, and also inspired many other 3rd person survival horror games that released in the future. Games such as Dead Space and The Evil Within wouldn't exist without this little gem. It's not bad, but it sure as hell isn't great and it can end up seriously getting on your nerves if you play without breaks. [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/33401179/]Follow my curator page for more recommendations! A very solid "RE4 clone" (even though it only came out a measly two months after). I love the setting (a large ship that sways with the ocean, and then an even bigger oil rig), they're both strangely rare in horror games. Be sure to get the fixes from PCGamingWiki, you'll need a few of them to play the game properly on modern hardware! https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Cold_Fear

Very fun survival horror with a classic feel but some more modern amenities, such as non-tank controls, easy aiming (when you aren't rocking back and forth and sliding around the ship deck!), looting enemies for health/ammo and an infinite ammo restock in armory rooms in case you mess up (only needed to use it once near the end of the game on Hard difficulty). A steal for the price.

a very underrated survival horror game, the control is a bit clunky but it is understandable for the year it was released, very enjoyable and with a good story.

I had a good time playing this and have to say it did make me jump a few times. I started my first play through on hard and it was great experience that I'm glad I played as survival horror fan. If you told me and I knew nothing of this game that - Capcom used this game as a template for RE: Revelations or it's one of Capcom's games before RE4 or EA made this before Dead Space I would actually believe it you. It has a mix of Resident Evil, RE:Revelations, Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space. You play as Tom who is with a rescue team to investigate a fishing boat after (what I believe is special forces team) goes AWOL. It wastes no getting into game and seeing the storm with the raging seas, the wind howling, and the lashing rain it definitely sets the mood. The boat rocking was nice touch and the atmosphere in-game is fantastic. The game uses a fixed camera with an over the shoulder for aiming. The fix camera is relevant to the camera - so if the camera is looking at the player and the player walks towards the camera you hold down, unlike RE which is relevant to the character where you just hold forward to move towards the camera. This can cause issues when the camera switches especially to players who are not used to these type of games so you'll have to used it. Over the shoulder you can't switch sides but you can move and shoot. CFs story is pretty good. I enjoyed learning about what was going on, how it all happened and the pacing was just right, along with the game-play I didn't feel like it was dragging on. The game is straight forward a few bits of backtracking with no puzzles. You cannot save whenever you want, you only save at checkpoints when you enter doors after advancing the story with the distance between each checkpoint being quite generous, but there are places that you can get a game over and have to reply a good bit. As much as I enjoyed it there are a few negatives. The exocels attack even when you remove their heads, even though you're a good distance they still seem to hit you. Also another enemy in the game uses a tentacle to attack you. It can latch on to you without you noticing and drain all your health very quickly. While the game isn't short and is a decent length, it seems that somethings were cut. Some enemies weren't explained even though I searched everywhere. Some scenes are a little weird, for instance this one - you have to give the vaccine to Anna (another NPC), Tom collapses then it fades to black then the person over the radio says "get up, you have things to do" Tom just gets up and says "Okay, I do this, you save Anna". So I'm scratching my head saying Anna is gone, and Tom doesn't say anything he just carries on which is really jarring. Down the line Anna contacts him and he says "thanks for saving me"....when! Seems to me, you were meant to play as Anna but was scraped coupled with the bonus feature looks liked there where meant to be more enemies. If this game got a remake it could be in the top 3 next RE and Dead Space, it just needs the love and care it deserved, it's underrated gem, sadly it was overshadowed by RE4. So are a few things to know. - It works well on Linux - Try not to use all the med kits you see, you can always go back if you ever need it. - No controller support, keyboard and mouse worked well. - Turn up the sensitivity on your mouse in game and turn up the DPI on your mouse or in settings. It's very slow when aiming. - Make sure you have full health on the last boss. Play it if you don't mind old games and love survival horror and just know there are parts you will get annoyed at.
