Jan. 2025
A dead average game if I ever played one. Close to the Sun is a competent slow-paced walking sim with an interesting setting and and some beautiful levels. If you're keen on that type of game -and can put up with with some sub-par gameplay- it's worth getting on sale. Otherwise, give it a miss. I'm giving it a 'recommend' because my opinion just barely falls on the positive side. Visuals and Sound The game looks beautiful. Art direction and set-dressing is excellent. The sound design is serviceable overall, occasionally great, occasionally lacking. The soundtrack -while never really standing out- captures the mood well. Truthfully, walking through the Helios is the main reason to play the game. Its a good setting, and it's fun to explore. Horror? The game has a horror theme, but it'd be a stretch to call it a horror game. It was never even a little scary, despite having a few low-speed chases. (I'll come back to that.) The game does a great job creating atmosphere and a mood, but that mood doesn't really lend to be scared. Especially once you realise you'll never need to hide or be wary of a roaming enemy. It's mostly peaceful exploration. The Slowness This is the biggest weakness of the game. It's slow. Painfully slow. I don't mean pacing, I mean your character moves at a snails pace. You can hold shift for a tiny speed increase, but with the spaces you'll be navigating it still feels like a crawl. There are things to find if you explore, but the slow speed and often large spaces discourage this heavily. You do get a boost to your sprint speed when one of the scripted chase scenes is happening, but even then it's just a brisk jog. The low speed of the chases really killed the tension for me, especially looking back to see the monster slowly ambling over, with animations that are clearly designed to be used at twice the speed. I have no idea why they chose to keep the player so slow. The game would have felt so much better if all speeds had been doubled. Navigating the Environment There is no crouch, and a jump so useless it's weird they left it in at all. Instead, you will have fixed moments where you can vault, or crawl under, or shuffle past an obstacle. Weirdly, there is no visual shorthand for when this is an option. I know people complain about excessive 'yellow paint' showing interactions, but this game has the opposite problem. It was never a huge issue, and and icon will appear when you get close, but does sometimes make it harder to read where the path is at a distance. These interactions slow you down for an animation to play, and seem to serve no real purpose beyond spicing up the movement a little. I'd rather they were cut entirely, or better yet, replaced by simply giving the player the ability to jump and crouch, and letting them bypass obstacles that way. Story The story is... fine. It has an interesting set-up though doesn't really deliver on it by the end. The voice acting was solid enough, and there was just enough going on to stop me from getting bored, though I think I'll have forgotten most of it in a few days. The emotional moments didn't really hit for me, but I think that was the tedium of the movement effecting my mood. The ending was sudden and not very climatic. It almost feels like they were teasing a DLC or sequel. If they do, I hope they fix the biggest issues. Overall This review feels more negative than positive, but I still think its a well made game. The visuals and sound carry it, combined with the fact that at 4 hours, it ended before all the negatives started really getting on my nerves. Despite my criticisms it was obviously made with care and effort. It's a 5-6 out of ten, but it cost me what, two coffee's worth? Get it if you like the style, it's on a big sale, and you don't mind dealing with clunky mechanics for a few hours.

The correct rating is : Meh. Pro : The game was very promissing. Loved the universe, the music, the ambiance and the little adrenaline rush from time to time. Story is a little easy but still interesting. Graphics are nice and it's overall quite immersive. Con : IT'S ABSOLUTELY UNFINISHED ! The ending is so disappointing and resolves nothing. There was several threads to follow, questions and all but ... none are answered and it's very frustrating. Also, it lacks interactivity to be just a little less linear. 7 hours to go through all the content is VERY short, even for this kind of games. Double would have been acceptable. A shame really ...

It is hard on this one. Sound is good. Audio dialog are more-or-less OK. Controls are clunky. It is fun to watch dropping/jumping - she fell, stop to stand, and then continues dropping. There are place to stuck (in the water, where the plank is - you can walk on plank and drop behind - and then you are doomed to stay there forever). Water sometimes decides not to stop you - you can run "fast". Checkpoints are crazy - sometimes you load checkpoint and die immediately (near the gigantic coil). So, there are plenty places to improvements. Sometimes there are hidden kind of green infinity signs, which does nothing. About story- it is not completed. After completing the game, it is till not clear what happened and how it ended. There are more and more open questions in the story, but almost none of them becomes answered. It was middle quality story with clumsy controls, where you haven't got any answers. I recommend this game only if you have nothing else to play.

Primarily a walking sim with a very few, easily solved puzzles and a small number of chase sequences where you have to run for your life. There are collectibles that you find along the way, none of which are truly difficult to find. The story is presented in 10 chapters and the game automatically saves at the end each each chapter. If you need to leave the game in the middle of the chapter, you'll restart at the beginning of that chapter. I was drawn to this game by it's premise and by the look of the ship in the trailer. I was not dissappointed. The design and presentation of the ship that you explore is visually captivating, the voice acting and music were appropriate, and the story was intriguing. A well presented, immersive experience. I am not a fan of horror and gore, and I was relieved that those elements weren't over-the-top in this game. There were a few mild jumpscares and a pervasive tense atmosphere. I was disappointed that many of the mysteries raised in the story never seem to get resolved by the end of the game. Overall I really enjoyed this game and will replay it just to fully explore the environment. Recommended for fans of walking sims looking for something a little different.

It's like Bioshock where Rapture is the Nautilus from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen except with less dark satire of Atlas Shrugged and more Tesla vs. Edison feud, less genetic engineering science magic and more electrical arcing science magic, and all the dismembered and disemboweled corpses you could ever want but with no way to make more of them yourself. A walking simulator where you sometimes suddenly have to run for your life, which is still way better than QTE. It's a great first half of an entertaining story that will never get a second half. And don't even think about quitting in the middle of a chapter, because you won't have your progress saved. Not perfect but I had an enjoyable playthrough.
