This game caught my eye since it first resembled the old Impression Games series. In some respect it does, but Citadelum makes things easier while also making other aspects more complicated. A throwback to the later half of Impression Games' city-builders, particularly those featuring deities, Citadelum is a neat game that takes you through the late Roman Republic and into the early Empire period. Unlike Impression Games, you need resources to build structures, requiring you to be cautious in your intial expansions everytime you start a game. Similarly, unlike Caesar 3, you can build your aqueducts in tandem with the roads, something that I took time getting used to. Speaking of gods, the player can make sacrifices to them to earn divine favour & stave off their displeasure. Amusingly, you can even sacrifice your excess populace to do so, a historical anachronism since the ancient Romans abhorred human sacrifice. The Dii Consentes in Citadelum are rendered reasonably well, both in their heavenly screen as well as when they come down to earth. Oddly enough, only four of the 12 major gods are depicted overall. At times, the animation could be better rendered, but no complaints on my part really. Throughout my playthrough, the game has been bug-free, but some of the mechanics are confusing. I can understand when I'm alerted to the fact that the populace emigrates elsewhere due to a lack of festivals or cultural events (bread & circuses), but when they leave to seek jobs elsewhere despite the numerous vacancies? Now that is puzzling. Similarly, the revenue generated from trade & patrician taxing is a bit in the favour of the player. You could set wages at the highest and taxes at the lowest, and you'd still make a profit. The world map is enjoyable to explore, while the military aspect is a more fleshed-out version of Impression Games' titles, though as a city-builder Citadelum is not heavy on that element. At least you can form proper stances before attacking. On the subject of maps, the game's editor (developer Abylight Barcelona deserves a thumbs-up for including it from the get go) is a bit confusing for the layperson. A shame, I would've liked to make my own sandbox map as it were. Elsewhere, some of the UI is a bit inconvenient. For one, it would have been nice to be able to key in values like the number of sacrificial pigs at temples, or the number of troops one wishes to train, instead of having to mash the mouse button repeatedly. Overall, I'm satisfied with Citadelum, especially its pricing, which is quite affordable for my currency. Again, Abylight Barcelona ought to be commended for producing a full game instead of going into Early Access. Lord knows how much they had to spend to do so. I look forward to any potential DLCs for the game, especially ones which allow you to manufacture those goods which are currently only available via trade.

The TRVE Caesar 5. Sort of. Mechanically it does everything that Caesar did but modernized. It even has world map interactions, similar to Caesar 2 (though not as deep.) One thing this game lacks is the personality of the Sierra games. No clicking on your civs for random bits of dialogue. No school children running through the streets as soon as you place a school. Those games had so much charm, Citadelvm is sort of straight laced in this respect and the lack of that 90's Sierra charm is noticeable. Still a fun game for city builder diehards.

Game is fun to play. Developers need to re-balance the triggered events. Your city will be fine until you generate an army. Then it's 1 solider = 1 fire/collapse. And the Gods aren't going to be cool with you picking just one. They move into the punishment disposition like snot off a metal doorknob. Also, please add something I can do about the rampant murder. Trade is smooth. Combat is Rock-Paper-Scissors style. Warehouses, Granaries, etc have AOE. Markets pull from anywhere, also covers AOE. City design flows well. Menus, UI, all okay. My only criticism is the very real need for triggered events balancing.

I do recommend this game. Specially if you are a fan of "Zeus Master Of Olympus". I was a big fan of old games like "Zeus Master of Olympus", "Caesar", "Pharaoh". And this is the only game, that brings back all these games to life. You can call it "Zeus: Master of Olympus 2, The Rome Edition. With up-to-date graphics and fun mechanics its a "Gem" to those, who appreciate these types of games. I have noticed big improvements from a demo and can say that Indie developer "Abylight Barcelona" have a passion and made this with a heart, not like majority AAA developers who aim just for a quick buck. Look, this game is now just 20 euros and it is owesome. Have realistic expectations and do not compare it to Manor Lords. For me its a 10/10 (This was made for the fans of an old Sierra strategy games). If you know developer - "Impressions Games" this is the closest you can get. -Review update- Overall, after playing it more. I have just one big concern about the game. Its not in early access. This game is by no means perfect and I do not like the unlimited resources, so I have hope that developers will put some work to make this gem more polished.

This game makes me really happy when I play it! It's definitely shifting those dopamine levers in my brain. In 1998, during the golden era of PC gaming, Sierra Studios released a city builder named "Caesar III". I've been patiently waiting for someone to create a worthy successor. I played the Citadelum demo during a Steam festival, so I knew that this game was fantastic. The supply chain in Citadelum is slightly deeper - having a fishing hut isn't enough to supply fish to your populace, you also need to build a fishmonger ( to turn the fish into fillets ). The same idea exists with a pig farm - you need a butchery, to carve up the piggy-wigs. You need a winery, to turn grapes from a farm, into an alcoholic beverage. There are a lot of food types, and you have to meet the needs of both the lower and upper classes. You need to explore surrounding lands, in order to open up possible trade routes. There are about 10 missions in the campaign, with another 9 or so workshop map scenarios, created by players. I'm trying to pace myself, and complete a map a day, in order to revel in the content. I may or may not update this review, since it is a first impressions review.
