This is a pretty neat game and kind of underrated game imo. Its like a mixture of Quake 1, Quake 2 and I guess you could say Dusk and Doom. The sound design and the soundtrack are amazing, especially the music which is very atmospheric, the voices for the characters are a little bit rough but forgivable. I love the enemy design and level designs (appearance wise). The game itself is a little challenging because some enemies deal good damage to you or they either swarm you or they appear behind you. *My only complaint are some terrible level designs (gameplay wise), because you can easily get lost. Especially the last levels of the ,,original'' campaign are bulls**t because some enemies are inside monster closet, they teleport right behind you and for the most part deal unavoidable damage, which sucks if you are low on health. Oh and Alien captain is sometimes very annoying to deal with. Not to mention projectile weapons are clunky and if you shoot from cover, the projectile will hit the wall. This can obviously be bad if you use Grenader. Do I still reccomend this game? Yes I do, because even with some rough parts here and there, I still think its a fun game and a blast to play.

Chasm is an interesting experience with neat ideas, and it has a lot of charm. The combat feels good. The weapons are pretty cool. Enemy designs are creative. The art style is really neat, and I love the way it looks and feels. The ambient soundtrack is great and fits the environments you're fighting in. However, this game has some serious issues, and one must think about that before purchasing. The first issue is the price. The people who worked on remastering and porting over Chasm for modern systems did an amazing job. While I get that they need their paycheck, the base game is short, and it has some issues that cheapen the experience. Get this game during a sale. As many may point out, the level design can be a pain in the ass to navigate, sometimes leaving you hunting for a switch in some obscured spot. There are puzzles that don't give you a hint at all and leave you clueless on what to do until you get bored and decide to shoot a certain thing after walking around for several minutes losing your mind. Combat encounters can be cheap, spawning enemies right behind you or around you in tight corridors, leaving you cornered and swiftly reaching for the Quick Load button when you realize that you're stuck. Some of the situations the game will put you in (most notably the level that starts you in a pool of liquid that hurts you and drains your health, just for you to jump to safety and the door closes right in front of you) are pretty damn cheap and can feel disheartening at times. Despite these issues, I still enjoyed Chasm for what it's worth. If you're willing to put up with these issues, I recommend grabbing this game on a sale.

Chasm: The Rift is a fascinating eurojank FPS from the mid 90s that unfortunately got terrible reviews for it's time for being too similar to Quake. It was actually supposed to compete with Quake a year earlier, but GT Interactive lost publishing rights to Activision when id Software signed with them. I remember playing this game when it came out many moons ago in 1997 and absolutely loving it. It was like Quake, yes, but way creepier. The dismemberment at the time was so crazy, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. And yes, it seems tame and cartoonish now, but when this evil puppy came out, I was blown away by it's gameplay. It's nothing revolutionary, but at the time, I thought it was pushing the limits of what we could do with a first person shooter. Of course, Half-Life came out a year later and set the new standards of FPS gameplay, but that was to come down the pipes soon enough. Looking at it now without the nostalgic lens, I can see that this is just a good, plain, meat and potatoes "boomer shooter." (God I hate that phrase). You collect keys, you kill everything that isn't you, you go down archaic hallways and set off traps and switches. What really sets it apart though is ATMOSPHERE ATMOSPHERE ATMOSPHERE. Chasm The Rift just has this dark oppressive vibe that can only rival Quake and Doom 64 with it's constant dread. The soundtrack by Alex Kot goes from 90s drum and bass techno to reverberated lone metal pipe echoes, perfectly accentuating the fear that this game brings. While the guns might not be super special, the gunplay is smooth and satisfying. Everything just has a good crunch to it. Loud and powerful. What more do you need? And now, with the excellent remaster by General Arcade (who also did a fabulous job of bringing FromSoftware's goofiest game to modern software, Metal Wolf Chaos) you can now play this forgotten gem at a very reasonable price. Also, most of the time it's 50% off. You can't lose. This one is an underrated and underappreciated classic.

A very difficult but a very good boomer shooter. I enjoyed how the bosses become a puzzle more then a shoot them. This was enjoyable, well done.

Enter the Slavjank. A world pieced together with constructs of a 2D engine, retro fitted to appeal to the grimy sludge moodiness that technical limitations had made a standard. The remaster does a fine job making the game playable on the latest hardware with fun visual tweaks such as pixelation scaling. Running around feels like moving a stick of warm butter back and forth on a 2D plane. The shooting satisfies with odd weapons that graduated from the Daikatana™ School Of Weapons Design. The lack of verticality tightens the already simplistic gameplay like a weighted blanket. You’ll most likely finish the game in under 3 to 4 hours plus another 1-2 for the expansion. The amount of fan created content is scarce, but one called “Cursed Land” is designed with the engine limitations in mind with some surprises. Much thanks to David S for being a champion of this wonderful gift to modern day retro FPS fan.
