Actually missed playing Vanguard before Bushiroad made separate new rules apart from the Stride era and Gear Chronicles, which made my friends give up on this game because of how much they invested in their stride-focused decks CPU is challenging enough to learn the new rules, so good to learn the new mechanics or try out new deck archetypes you can't build in real life unless you want to spend money playing an actual deck. And at least this game's more fun than Yu-Gi-Oh! Cancer Duel meta. I can actually get sheet done with my plays in a match.
I love TCGs in general but never had the chance to play Vanguard. I know there is a newer version of this game but I saw this on sale for 90% off so I picked it up to give the game a go and I don't regret it. The game looks a bit complex at first but it's easy to pick up and this game is a good blend of other TCGs but with its own unique mechanics. If you ever had a passing curiosity about Vanguard and see this game greatly discounted to less than £5 definitely pick it up and give it a go. Just be aware that unless you have a friend with the game there likely won't be anyone playing online and there is a bit of a difficulty curve but when you hit it just start buying packs and reading cards and you can figure out a strat to play. Without any external help I turned the lyrical monasterio pre-built deck into a "Friend" strategy using cards that make friends with the others in their rear guard column to grant buffs or effects. If you love card games, give this one a go whenever you see it on sale.
**Truly a Game for Cardfighters** I started watching CfV Season 1 when Yu-gi-oh no longer scratched the itch for me. Someone told me that CfV is a commercial but a very good commercial. He was right. I bought this game for $80 CAD. This will not be a game for all. Buy it if you love CfV because it will scratch that itch perfectly, as my playtime should indicate. The game could do with more explanation of certain mechanics and the DLC is a racket. But the base game is well worth the money if and only if you're a fan of the anime. And FYI, all the DLC cards are available in the second game. I plan to pick it up. Contrary to what the Steam page says, the game is playable on Steam Deck as long as you don't bring up any prompt that requires you to type. Very happy with Dear Days.
The game is nice and it does scratch that card collection, deck builder itch, but isn't exactly friendly to new players. (and I bought this game on sale for $6 on a 92% off sale. would give a retro review of 'average' or C+) So this is more of a retro review since Dear Days 2 is out and has all of the DLC from this one and the updated rules. So this is more comparing it to other 'retro' games with old formats. By comparison I will do it as No online duels and more for single player. (since DLC is a thing and you may or may not want to pay for the DLC which is expensive and doesn't seem to go on sale for some odd reason. Really odd considering Dear Days 2 has all of this game's DLC which would be the easier buy for online play.) 1st perk/issue - Story mode. It is great that it has a story mode and while it is an average story. It is not that bad and for most players it will be the excuse to grind for points to buy packs and to learn the card game. The first issue is that unlike other story mode card games like the Yugioh series with most of their handheld games, Shadowverse Champions (switch game), or Cardaire... you can't grind duel old opponents. This is one of those minor things that really helps people test decks and get a better idea or grasp of the card game and more importantly... which deck they will prefer. As the tutorial doesn't help that much as it gives the roughest explanation to give you a basic idea of how the card game works... and then you are supposed to look through the help guide and try reading how every random word or icon is supposed to mean. That is a lot harder to do when the 6 'nations' have a different focus than each other... and that's without how some of the deck Vanguards (leader of your deck) prefers certain styles or tactics over others. So learning how to play becomes a bit rougher as you need to play games to win points to buy decks and the story starts throwing hard limit checks to see if you already learned which deck you like and how to play it well... Otherwise you will have to face loss after loss after loss after loss... until you get sick and tired of the game, earn enough points to get the cards you need to make your deck work... or get enough cards for another deck together and see if that deck concept will work. With the reward of the game getting harder as the enemy decks become better. Now if you already know how to play the game well, which deck you are good with, or have a good card collection already set up as you look up online what deck to copy as you play it and learn if this deck is to your style and taste that isn't that bad. But this is on the prospect that you are a new player who bought this card game on sale because you thought a 92% off sale wasn't that bad. Oh and you can face an AI on hard with a fully built deck which can be okay if you already have a good deck and good understanding of the game. Not so much if you are lacking it... and you can face the story mode on 'easy AI' for earning half the points you would have won needed to buy card packs. Which isn't that helpful. As a game on it's own judged by it's own merits... it isn't that bad and you can have fun testing decks and getting a feel for the game. It just isn't that friendly to new starting players. When you have a lot of points, a lot of cards, and found a deck you like it can be rather fun... but getting to that point is rather annoying. Maybe Dear Days 2 solved those issues, but when compared to those other 'retro' card games with single player... this one is a bit rougher. Buy on sale, but not at full price. Coin toss if you want to play it against a friend online, but unless you fork out money for that DLC it probably would be best to avoid going online for duels and even then... most people would probably advise you to just buy Dear Days 2 if you want to do that.
