It's nice to play a rougelike town management game. Each run feels good and, while you still grow attached to your town, it's nice to create something anew each run. All of the game mechanics are solid though punishing. If the core game is to difficult, there are a lot of other play options that aren't as brutal.

Charming, peaceful and fun. A unique combination of sim city and deckbuilding. Good: - Pleasing town visuals. If you're playing well, you can really see how the organization of different structures match a real town. People don't want to live by slums; rich people want yards. It all makes sense. - Awesome piano music. Whoever wrote these songs is no amateur/hobbyist and it shows. While the early learning curve annoyed me, the music kept me calm and made me want to stay. - Decent depth without being extreme. Bad: - Almost nonexistent tutorial. You will straight up have no idea what's going on for the first 20 minutes. Mostly only taught at all after you already just did something wrong, because it teaches you mechanics AFTER you make decisions with new things. Okay?? - Lacking card information for fundamental basics (surrounding zone colors). Eventually you will memorize the info that doesn't show, but why? Occasionally a card simply doesn't say something which is then damning, like if they must attach to a street or not. - Deck viewer SUCKS. You will quickly end up with 50 cards in your deck if you aren't careful and must monitor the balance of your deck. But you can view very few cards at once, and interpreting your whole deck is an utter pain. The UI for this is truly crap and makes this the biggest annoyance in the game. -Sometimes when making an important decision, cannot view hand or other things to plan properly. - LIttle replay value as every run feels basically the same. Different maps/rules helps a little. Most of the problems aren't a big deal once you memorize the cards. And then most of the game is just pleasing. Good stuff mostly. Just not enough replay value.

In a world where Slay the Spire exists, it's hard to judge deck builders fairly. Cardboard Town entertained me for a few hours (12 so far), but didn't grip me like StS, Balatro, Cobalt Core, and other more polished games. As of August 2024, I give it my weakest positive rating, but if the developers work on the art and UI they might have something worth getting excited about.

Very fun if you like base building sims with grid-like placement and rogue like deck building games this is the game for you! Many inner working mechanics and whatnot which you can devise a strategy to win. I'm liking it a lot

The reviews I saw of this game made me hesitant to buy it but I eventually got it when it was on sale. I've been having a lot of fun with it! The criticisms in those reviews are very valid and you must go out of your way to fix the flaws they've pointed out. I've already encountered run-ending bugs on every single run. It didn't stop me from enjoying the core gameplay loop though. It has something nice going on. The game feel is pretty much solid; constantly shambling and panicking on what to do and coming out on top (mostly). Though I haven't won a single game, because of the mentioned bugs, I'm sure I'll clutch through it eventually. Don't be discouraged; just fix the as much of the critical issues as you can. It has a solid base idea. I'm sure after some adjustments and tweaks, it'll be the great game it is meant to be!
