this is a great homage to the original. it goes even deeper and adds quite a bit of new mechanics set in a forest theme. the world feels magical and alive. i haven't reached the full magic aspect of this (which is what the big difference between the 2 are) i'm still early, but excited to experience it all. beware this is a huge time sink type of game, play at your own pace in your own way, lots of room to role-play different characters using the perk system....absolute gem! edit: i have to mention the incredible cooking system. it's been completely changed from the CSTI and i love it! instead of unlocking recipes to cook 'meals', you now get different types of bowls/cauldrons to use where you put different ingredients inside. depending on what u add it changes the flavor and consistency of the final result...which ur character will either love, be ok with, or outright dislike. i spent hours experimenting with different stews/pottage and broths. very original and unique system, just love it! ✨the devs are (imo) the very best here on steam. they are responsive, helpful, take cc and engaging...not to mention brilliant, for what they've created here🌟

Quick thumbs-up from me: The first impressions are good, and I especially like that now we have a quest system guiding the player with the first steps for survival. I also like the mood of this game, and it’s even more immersive than the previous game from this series ([url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1694420/Card_Survival_Tropical_Island/]Card Survival: Tropical Island ). Don’t be fooled by the card game mechanics – this series is all about strategy, planning, experimenting and constant learning, so it’s far from the usual deckbuilder. Last, but not least: this developer is very dedicated (he implemented a requested featured quite quickly, for instance) and really cares about feedback. I’s a breath of fresh air seeing a caring dev nowadays, so he definitely deserves your support. Be aware that this game is in Early Access, so many things will change over time, so if you want a more complete experience for now, I recommend Card Survival: Tropical Island or, if you’re more into fantasy stuff, you can wait until this game is out of Early Access. If you want to give this series a try but you’re out of money, there’s a demo for the first game, called [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/2147680/Card_Survival_Tropical_Island__The_First_Days/]Card Survival: Tropical Island - The First Days .

I rarely review games, but this title gets unreasonable amounts of hate from people who do not understand what the Early Access means, how small Indie studios operate or just have wild, unreasonable expectations. This is a sequel to the 'Card Survival: Tropical Island'. It builds upons the predecessor and adds some new, interesting mechanics like magic (and a couple others yet to come) and focuses on a different challenges (fresh water and body heat are no longer your worst enemies and main obstacles). There is already a ton of content for an Early Access game;, and there is at least 2 years worth of updates to look forward too. Gameplay is solid, bugs and issues are minimal; some of the old systems have been updated and improved upon (like drying food and herbs). Devs are very active on their Discord and incorporate players suggestions within updates and hotfixes. Is the game at its current state better than its predecessor? Probably not, but it's far from being finished yet. These devs earned my trust, as their previous title was a masterpiece, and I'm already having a ton of fun exploring the forest, slowly re-learning everything I knew from the first tile. If you're still on the fence, just wait for further patches and content updates. I'm sure that with time, this game will become even better that CS:TI ever was.

Compared to the early access launch of Card Survival: Tropical Island... Fantasy Forest has a lot more to begin with and some of the tweaks added to Tropical Island near the end of early access were implemented like clicking and holding the top/bottom of the card to quick transfer large stacks. Obviously this game has much to improve on still and I would recommend if you're iffy about early access games wait til release. Now that's out of the way... Exploring in Fantasy Forest is different from Tropical Island cause now you move on a grid system instead of just clicking the location card connected to your current location. So that means it's time to break out the old pen an paper and start drawing a map. If you don't want to draw a paper map I'd recommend you use Gridmonger until the developer decides to add some way to upkeep a map in game. It's been extremely useful to keep track of the paths and locations. https://gridmonger.johnnovak.net/ And don't forget to read the manual the program isn't that upfront how it works. I know... no one likes to read the manual but it's worth using. At least read the "Getting Started" section https://gridmonger.johnnovak.net/manual/getting-started.html https://gridmonger.johnnovak.net/manual/contents.html I know there have been people that don't like it but I got used it after an hour or two. I do like the fact that due to this system the animals also use it. Occasionally you will see a Tracks card and it's freshness determines how recently an animal walked by. I've found success by just waiting on that tile or making an educated guess on which direction the animal moved. Also, combat has been changed and is no longer a just a one and done thing. I haven't dug too deep into it yet cause i'm assuming different equipment and skill levels affect your actions but you now have more options when engaging animals and hostiles. You have your normal options like Running away and Attacking but now there's an option to Dodge. I also noticed with enough spear fighting skill I could use Brace. The combat log will tell you what your opponent will attempt to do, like they're trying to bite or scratch and you can respond for what you think it best. As you or your opponent get injured success rates will drop or rise. If you get a good hit in it'll be easier to hit your opponent on your next attack. Not every animal will fight you though. Some will attempt to flee as well and you do get the option to chase them but this will move you to another tile and if you're not careful you will get lost so keep that mind. In conclusion the game is difficult just like Tropical Island but you learn from you failures and you try again. The game is more forgiving though with a new checkpoint system that it uses by default but the normal permadeath mode is there as well. You can make this game as easy or hard as you want when you create a character and give them beneficial or negative traits. If you like survival games and don't mind making mistakes and learning from them give the game a shot.

Slightly premature review (as anyone who played the previous CS knows, hundreds of hours of gameplay are possible), but I just wanted to counter some of the inane early negative reviews I'm seeing here, and hope that other fans will do the same. As someone who played CS:TI in early access last time and saw how it evolved, what we have here on day 1 is pretty much exactly what I'd hope to see. Is it perfect? No, but who cares. I understand that some are skeptical of EA titles, and understandably so, but I think some of these early negative reviews are ignoring the track record of this dev in particular. If EA is anything like it was last time, consistent updates that improve/add to the game are sure to come, and frankly my first impression is that this game will be just as deep and replayable as the the last one.
